This is honestly one of the best episodes of the series, not just because it has Giancarlo Esposito but because almost the entire episode is in a video game that I would LOVE to play in real life. Unfortunately the final scene had to be changed because Chevy Chase was being a pain in the ass, like he always was. Originally the end credits scene was supposed to have Abed show Pierce that he modded the game so that Pierce’s dad would actually say he loved him, instead of being the asshole he always was. But Chevy being a REAL asshole wouldn’t show up on set that day so they scrapped it and we got what we got instead.

Shows are produced months in advance. It was likely a network decision to put the episode here, maybe because they thought this batch of episodes was too dark and would lose viewers without something to lighten the mood. They swapped a bunch of other episodes throughout the first 4 seasons to try to get better ratings. It's why after the Glee episode, the next one is supposed to be Contemporary Impressionists but it was swapped with Urban Matrimony. Jeff says in Regional Holiday Music he's gonna see a shrink and then in Contemporary Impressionists they return from break and Jeff is on meds. Other notable swaps are Remedial Chaos Theory and Competitive Ecology; Physical Education and Basic Genealogy; and Social Psychology and Football, Feminism, and You.

Love this episode and its straight Mega Man vibes. A couple of behind-the-scenes things: 1) The original ending was supposed to be 8-bit Pierce playing digital catch with his 8-bit dad's head. Chevy Chase didn't show up to record his dialogue so the ending was added with the baby in the study room. Also, some fans started making the game. I played initial release. Don't know how far they got.

It's actually that Abed made Pierce that game and Pierce is supposed to hug Abed afterward to close out his arc. They were supposed to shoot it on the last day of filming but Chevy left early so the sets were demolished and they never got to film it.

This episode I think was originally meant to air much earlier in the season, but was delayed due to the animations. Also while the show didn't make a tie-in game, the Community community did. Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne is an actual fangame, though obviously without the fantastical openness as it is in the show.

I think this episode was supposed to happen before they got expelled. It's possible the production got delayed due to animation being so time consuming so continuity got messed up. That's why its current placement is so awkward. But that's just my theory.

First thing I ever saw Giancarlo Esposito in was Bob Roberts (1992), starring, written by, and directed by Tim Robbins. First time I ever saw Jack Black, too. It's brilliant political satire. And that reminds me of Wag the Dog (1997), directed by Barry Levinson and starring everybody. It's described as a political comedy, and it was funny but it also really creeped me out. I highly recommend both.

The original stinger was much more heartwarming. When Abed took the flash drive, he had made a part for Pierce: he would lay on a lawn chair and every time he pressed space, he’d throw a baseball at the giant head of his father. He would get 100 points and his dad would say, “Good job, son.” After pressing space a few times, Pierce stopped, stood up, and silently hugged Abed. It would’ve been great, but sadly Chevy Chase decided to just not film it. Ass.

Originally, they had planned a credit-scene of Abed showing Pierce a reprogrammed version of the game where Pierce's dad tells Pierce he loves him, and Pierce simply tells Abed thank you. That day on set, Chevy Chase was in a really bad mood and refusing to come out of his trailer. They were forced to quickly throw together the baby scene as a result. That's why they appear in the study lounge even though they shouldn't be there. Probably one of the biggest examples of how Chevy Chase's behavior effected the show.

I'm pretty sure Dan Harmon said Chevy went home early, not just to his trailer, because he was tired, not angry, and he did that pretty often because they could just shoot other scenes he's not in and pick back up with him the next day. But because it was the last day of shooting, they couldn't do that so the scene couldn't be shot at all and Dan was pissed about it because it was important for Pierce's character arc.

But this episode is in the middle of 19 and 21. It just seems obvious to me this episode wasn’t written with the idea in mind that they were still banned from the school. Why would they wait to try to stop Chang and not even bring it up the whole episode
