Something underrated about this episode is how much it says about each character. You learn so much based off who's missing from the group to get the pizza. Troy's absence is violent chaos. Abed's absence is anger and meanness. Jeff's absence leads to everyone feeling a little more relaxed. I especially love the detail at the end that Troy perfectly sets up the airplane bathroom comment, but Pierce doesn't even mention Eartha Kitt.
@TheBloobster

This is what makes it one of the greatest written sitcom episodes of all time. In 23 minutes, they tell us exactly how 7 different people's absences reflect upon their friend group... 7 characters are developed in 2 min each, all while being hilarious. It's top notch writing. Jeff is the true buzzkill.

@@TheBloobster Jeff truly is. Which is funny after the season 3 premiere where Jeff becomes the new Pierce. The thing is they're all pretty insane, Pierce is just really public with his thoughts and comments so he's become a scapegoat. Jeff is different because he's seen as so cool by the group, they want to please him as opposed to Pierce, but oftentimes Jeff can be just as closeminded and mean as Pierce

I like what the episode portrays about Jeff as a character, where Jeff's inherent focus on being cool by way of "doing nothing" is actually making him a bit of the new buzzkill of the group (and not as much Britta). He's clearly the one who started and is pushing the idea that Shirley's identity cant be baking, he shuts down Britta from singing, he puts down Troy's excitement at becoming an adult, etc. and so it's only in the timeline where he leaves that everyone else is suddenly having fun and enjoying the party. Then inversely, it's fitting that the timelines when Troy and Abed leave that cause the most strife or negativity amongst the group.
@brewdaly1873
@brewdaly1873 Жыл бұрын
It also kind of plays back to what Abed told him in season 1, in Investigative Journalism. Jeff is the Hawkeye, he's a leader. He usually has to be the serious one. But that's not always needed, he gets a lot of things wrong, and he also can be a conniving sonuvabitch.
@mathewdebol923
@mathewdebol923 Жыл бұрын
I love that, when Jeff leaves, everyone can be more comfortable with themselves and each other. Pierce doesn’t to reference Eartha Kitt even with the actual set up to name drop. Britta doesn’t feel the need to immediately toke up when Jeff stifles her singing. Abed quickly welcomes Annie to come live with them. I think my only critique of this episode’s effect on the show is that we don’t explore the darkest timeline enough or properly. Though I do love every instance that we do
@hanmitch457

I actually partly agree. I felt like Jeff's role in the group was always the "Dad", so to me it made sense that the kids were more aloof and foolhardy when the dad isnt around (Cause conventionally dads are buzzkills). We furthermore see that when jeff returns he breaks into a genuine smile, reinforcing the trope that in the end the "dad" just wants his family to be happy. I also agree with the statement about Troy and abed (especially troy), we see this in the episode with troys bday as well when hes the one who held the group toghether like glue.....

About Troy eating the troll: There’s a Norwegian fairytale where a boy called «Ashlad» (Askeladden) is captured by a troll. To get free, the boy suggested a eating competition, to see who could eat the most. Since the Troll couldn’t see very well, the boy put his backpack on his stomach, and putt all the porridge in there. When the troll said he couldn’t eat anymore, the boy said: «Why don’t you do like me, and cut a hole in your stomach so there’s room for more?» The boy had cut a hole in his backpack. Seeing this, the troll did the same, and died. This is a really shorten version of the story, but in my head, Troy had heard this story, but had forgotten everything, but remembered «Troll» and «Eating».

Just to clear the air regarding Jeff being called the new buzzkill based on this episode, Dan Harmon clarified in a PaleyFest panel after season 3 that the episode (and Jeff's arc) is the reflection on a leader in the group. Most of the times the leader is necessary to the functioning of the group but sometimes he has to step back to allow them to let loose. Of course, Dan worded it much better. The video is on youtube somewhere, shouldn't be hard to find
@Bobsmith-xq2pr
@Bobsmith-xq2pr Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it honestly seems there's a sort of pressure that each of the group seems to be feeling, a pressure to impress Jeff and gain approval, stemming from his roll as a leader. Pierce's prank on Troy only ends positively when Jeff was around to watch, (Troy's talk with Britta in the bathroom afterwards really emphasizes this, and Pierce wants approval from Jeff in almost all regards), we can see how Britta falls in line every time Jeff tells her to stop singing, Annie is still starstruck by Jeff and spends most of the timelines trying to help him. The only person not trying to impress Jeff is Shirley tbh, and Jeff spends time trying to actively control her.

This reaction didn't disappoint! Great episode and great reaction. And to answer the question "who doesn't want fresh baked stuff?" Jeff. Jeff doesn't. Nominated for an Emmy for comedy writing, I was surprised that it didn't win. Just so well structured, clever, funny, etc. Most interesting insight into the characters - Troy leaves, MAXIMUM conflict between the characters, their world falls tragically apart and goes down the worst timeline v. Jeff leaves, everyone's in perfect harmony, no character conflict, all having fun.

Of all the characters, Troy is the most "go with the flow" type. These types can often be the "glue that holds the group together" because of their willingness to support every member of the group. The other members of the group all have VERY strong ideas about how things should go, with Jeff arguably being the most domineering or controlling. That leadership mentality can be a real benefit, or a hindrance, for a group. When Jeff came back & saw everyone at peace & having fun, he didn't get mad, he smiled. Lesson: as a leader, know when to loosen up and give people some slack to be their own people. If they're good people, they'll do good things with that freedom.

The interesting thing about the timelines is that they’re simulated by Abeds imagination , so by analyzing them from that perspective you can interpret his thoughts on them and what he thinks would happen if any one of them grew distant If Annie or Pierce leave the group is more or less fine If Shirley leaves she’ll get her feelings hurt If Britta leaves she’ll make bad choices All pretty basic but I the Troy and Abed timeline leaves are really fascinating If Troy leaves everything spirals out of control because Troy is Abeds best friend and losing him is his worst case scenario But if Abed leaves(loses touch) everyone grows to resent each other and he can’t even see that when he returns because he has difficulty relating to other people
