Feren OS is based upon Ubuntu. It’s also my favorite Plasma-focused distro. It has numerous under-the-hood changes that improve upon Ubuntu and the user experience in general. And very polished! The many long-term improvements and tweaks make it clear the developers really know what they’re doing. One of the best distros out there.

@@electricalbatross5797 correct! Feren Classic was actually my first go at Feren OS. And I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Feren OS Store. It’s an enormous undertaking and far from ready, but development appears to be on the right path. I’m more of a server/terminal Linux user, so when I do use desktop Linux, I appreciate it when devs go above and beyond to make the desktop as polished and intuitive as possible. Small quality-of-life improvements really add up. Feren OS does this better than most distros. For example, I like to use multiple browsers, so Feren OS making Vivaldi a flagship browser and the Feren Firefox tweaks are much appreciated. And Plasma double-click!! So I don’t have to make these changes myself :)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but one of the barriers to entry to Linux for me was the sheer number of available distributions, which is why I simply opted for the stable, well-known Ubuntu. While choice and customizability are core appeals of Linux, it does seem to me like this absolute plethora of options fragments the userbase somewhat. I don't know... People that know more, do you think the massive number of distros are a significant factor standing in the way of more mainstream Linux adoption?

@@SunIsLost Based on the facts, i'd say no. Linux is the only operating system that has managed to pass the 1% barrier after the Windows/Mac duopoly, the second most used open source operating system after Linux is FreeBSD, which has a 0.01% desktop market share. according to StatCounter, and that OS has a centralized development unlike Linux, so there is a FreeBSD just like there is a Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, etc. Mainly one of the reasons why FreeBSD and other operating systems are way less popular than Linux is because of the lack of choices, and especially those that differ from Linux, which are almost non-existent, Linux distros have saturated the market so much that they have left very little space for other operating systems, which is why almost nobody talks about other FLOSS operating systems other than Linux.

Hello IG Mate, long time sub. My KDE Manjaro install borked AGAIN a couple of years back, so I thought I'd distro-hop before sticking with something. Garuda, basically, had everything themed and tweaked, exactly as I had my Manjaro install pimped out, so I ended up on that and haven't looked back. Of course, all that stuff is totally subjective but I love my hideous, garish desktop and it's backed by the proper Arch repos and not the awful mess, that Manjaro does wth it's repos. Admittedly, the first time I tried Manjaro 10+ years ago, I didn't have the knowhow but, every single time I've had Manjaro installed it has completely borked and I can't be bothered again. Other thing, that makes it great, IMHO, is Garuda's choice to use the Zen kernel out the box. Your system has never run so well, as it will running Zen and the compatibility to run pretty much anything on Linux is greater on Zen, than even Ubuntu's kernel. I do really love the one quick install of loads apps, at first run too. Their Chaotic AUR repo has a lot of packages already built, so saves time building from AUR proper and they're always upto date. They've recently introduced automatic hotfixes, on the occasions when problems do come down the pipes from upstream on Arch proper. This is a major USP for Garuda, and simply can't be underestimated when using anything Arch based. Also, the setup of Timeshift on the BTFS file system, pretty unique for Arch spins. Has also, got me out of trouble, on occasion although I haven't had any issues in a year now, probably because of the hotfixes. EndeavourOS, the spiritual successor to Antergos, is worth a shout too but I've no reason to switch at the moment. I do like MXLinux, great communty behind it, just a few of my regular apps missing from Debian and MX repos, so I can't bail from anything Arch based...

Spiral Linux is maintained by the same guy who does GeckLinux, so the guiding principles are much the same. It installs by defaut on BTRFS subvolumes and configures snapper to make snapshots when you perform package installs/updates, then makes the snapshots available on the grub boot menu. Easy rollbacks if something breaks, much like BSD boot environments. Also, the maintainer makes it easy to move the os from debian stable (bullseye) to testing or unstable, transforming it (mostly) to a rolling release. That's where BTRFS and snapshots come in handy. I plan on giving this a try soon.

Arch is one the 3 big bases after all: Arch, Fedora, Debian, and all of them are community driven, even though all of them currently financed directly or indirectly from big businesses: Fedora from IBM/Red Hat; Debian from Google and Arch from Valve. That needs to be said. There are no distros based on Manjaro. Manjaro is based on Arch. Any Arch "snafu" will one or the other way run out on Manjaro, unless they can work around it for good. That's it and that can be said for the other big 2. Ubuntu, if they go to the Snap file format full base, going out of Debian, will become a 4th one, but they're far from it, and that would to become the first fully commercial base of them all. From here one will to choose what best fits them.

Any on advise on best Linux version for me to use? I've been using Linux Mint (currently, Linux Mint Mate 21) for over a year and Linux Knoppix for half a decade before that. In general, my older laptops run much better (faster and updates) with Linux than with Windows. I have two main frustrations with Linux Mint (and most other distros). (1) After a year, I've not been able to use my Epson wireless Ecotank ET-3760 printer. With multiple versions, my printer setup can find the Epson on my network, but when I try to install, I end with a "There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'server-error-internal-error'" Is there a Linux distribution that would be either easier to connect to my printer or has a support group where others are trying to connect to Epson wireless Ecotank printers? I can either boot my laptop into Windows 7 or use a different computer with Windows 10 to connect to and print on my wireless printer. (2) My second frustration is not as important, but does seem to waste a lot of time. I run my Linux exclusively from USB boot drives. The directions for Linux Mint say to "Right-click the ISO file and select Make Bootable USB Stick, or launch Menu ‣ Accessories ‣ USB Image Writer". I have tried this approach many times and it either doesn't work at all or results in a boot USB which does not retain changes. There are several Facebook posts and KZbin videos addressing this issue and I work around it with a utility called MKUSB, which oddly, for me to use Linux Mint on an ongoing basis, is not included with the distribution and has to be installed from the terminal mode - fairly easy, but odd that seems to be required. Perhaps I was spoiled - I started out with Knoppix where I bought DVDs and USBs from OsDisc (that went out of business) which just ran when I booted them and accepted changes. Now when I either buy disks from other vendors or download the ISO and install to a USB, I seem to have to jump through hoops to create a bootable USB that retains changes. I liked Knoppix, but I also could not connect to my wireless printer with it either and later versions seem to be more available in German. However, with Knoppix there was an icon to install to a USB and the result was a bootable USB that retained changes. I've not been able to create a bootable USB that accepts changes with the Linux Mint install Icon (or following the install to USB directions) - MKUSB does work for me. There is a KZbin video that goes into the issue that seems to beyond my ability to utilize. Apparently, there may or may not be an issue with bootable persistent USB drives accepting drivers - perhaps like printer drivers? **** Linux, USBs, and Persistence Misconceptions kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4DGlKqmgpeWiM0 I am willing to purchase a different printer if necessary, I switched to the Epson Ecotank because I was fed up paying a lot of money for printer cartridges that sometimes were hard to find with my old printer. Suggestions for a refuge from Windows that just wants to run standard applications from a USB and use their printer? Thanks.

It is sort of elegant and sort of accessible to the ones whom need some assistance for low vision like me for example. I must concede that on their credit. On top of it for power users it is basic. And there nothing really to do about, but power users are maybe 1% of Windows users. They won't go after that crowd. They know that crowd knows where to go on. Need a device just for basic browsing and the likes? Windows 11 just works. Need something for serious work (other than the ones requiring MS Excel, once that is unique on the market) that requires other safety and reliability status? Just shop elsewhere from Mac to Linux.

I think we need an updated Britney Spears OS. Like with the new paranoid version. Could be fun.

For those who like the stability of Debian, Sparky linux is another great choice. Last time I installed it on one of my friend's system and he absolutely loves it. Sparky provides an easy way to install many popular softwares. It also provides a few extra tools.

Sparky Linux is the most underrated distro. Ever. I always have it running somewhere in my homelab. Amazing repos, devs, and tools. It always gets the job done. 💯

Maybe it's just me, and my bubble, but you might be living in fairy tale, thinking that you should leave people that betray you just once (if you mean it in any shape or form) that's gonna be really difficult, and lonely life, and no relationships, or friendships, or any kind of connection will last you longer than a year. For me personally I don't mind being alone, but I state again - in case you are want someone in your life (anyone for longer than a years) you can't leave people just after 1 betrayal.

My favourite are Void and Artix, i use both runit minimal install. No bloat, no systemd, no bullshit.

I don’t have much experience with Artix, but I do like Void. A lot. I should have another go at Artix. It’s been a while.

Void, Artix and Gentoo are three most notable systemd-free no BS distros. I try two of them, yet to try artix. Was planning to go artix on one of my machines, but couldn't figure out how to install systemd-boot on it. So discarded the idea and went with arch, because it's easy to install. Maybe in future will try artix.

I love Zorin OS. But can you tell if the latest build of Zorin(16.1 maybe) is based on Ubuntu 22.04 or 21.04?
@SaptarshiRoySRoyPC2 жыл бұрын
RHEL, SLES and Ubuntu are the only GNU/Linux distributions with corporate support. Everything else in the Linux world is community based. This video is misleading to an extent.

Looked at Garuda-- but it's just OVERDONE for me-- butt ugly--(I loved it at first-- but after looking at it a couple days-- I see the OVERDONE look and could not get past that.. I do know it's GREAT software--- but FOR ME (my opinion ONLY) I don't like it. CAN"T STAND FEDORA- so don't want anything remotely close to it.. Fedora DID not work for me-- it is ugly- looks like a pukeydone WINDOWs- which I can't stand- was laggy and the DNF or DNS or whatever that crap is- was SLOWer than smoke off pooh.. It messed up my drive numberig at boot too and had to redo the entire drive.

Their a lot of distro that pack nice features but almost all of them (excluding tromjaro) have soooooo bad websites that just make me run out directly… seriously all their nice work on the distro busted by a 90’ and badly designed website… it’s a shame but image matter these days…
