Important to know. University first year dropout rate is 50% YES 50%. They would like to hide that fact, but its true, look it up yourself. BTW, your debt doesn't go away, just because you dropped out. California Universities cost about $12-15,000 per year, plus other costs, fees, then add living expenses, plan on close to $50,000 per year (housing, food etc) Community College is nearly FREE if you do it right. BOOM, you're already smarter than the 4 year university student by SAVING $100,000 in your first 2 years of schooling. 1. If you're fresh out of high school... Think about taking 2 summer classes at community college. You're not a kid anymore, 'summertime off' is OVER.. DEAL WITH IT. By taking two summer classes right after your Senior year graduation, you lighten your load for you first fall semester at College. Its simple logic. (and do that every summer, then pickup a part time job too) 2. Make sure you're taking TRANSFER CLASSES, if you intend to transfer to a 4 year college.... AND.. Not all TRANSFER CLASSES are accepted to BOTH UC and CS schools... DOUBLE CHECK YOUR CLASSES. 3. PART TIME STUDENT SUCCESS. I was working full time and going to night school. I took 2 evening/night school classes per semester, YEAR-ROUND, for 3 years and I got my AA/AS degree, and three Career Certificates, in Elect/Mech Design Drafting and CAD. My pay when I started school was $8.50 to $9.00 per hour. 3 years of Community College, 1/2 time evenings, I got my degree, after 2 years more working my new job skills, my pay rose to $22. per hour... I more than DOUBLED MY PAY with a Community College degree. YOU can do it too. 4. Planning to transfer to a 4 year? 4 year universities have a 50% dropout rate the first year. The second year, nearly 40% of the remainder dropout. UCI, UCLA, UC Berkley LOVE Community college graduates.. They have a lot of empty seats, after shedding their first two year failures. So, work hard, get good grades, and make sure to take ALL TRANSFER UNITS. You have already proved you're smarter than the average at UCLA, by entering as a Jr, with NO SCHOOL DEBT. cha-ching - you just saved $100,000 over your peers at UCLA... OH, and BTW, your final degree at UCLA, will look just like theirs... Or UCI, or UC Berkley

Not to mention, you pay $0 (as in tution) if you're in community college student in California, it's a program called "College Promise". And I get a free bus pass offered by them which is sooooo cool. However, you need to complete some requirements in order to join. (I am currently a community college student)

@@wangxu2155 I would think yes.. but take all transfer units there in Florida and maintain a 3.5 gpa is you can. To be sure check with your community college counselor... 4 year colleges love and need community college grads, as they lose a lot of students in their first two years.

I believe community college is harder than high school but easier than University. If you really think about that though, that means a community college grad is just as prepared, if not a little more prepared, for university than a person who just went from high school to a university. If having a 3.8 gpa from high school got you into a university than someone with a 3.8 gpa from a community college is just as capable as you. People don't think about that. Not everybody at a community college is stupid some people just had other things in their life going on during high school and weren't focused.

CC is what you make of it tbh. Sometimes the stereotypes are real, some of the Losers who didn't try in high school go there, but they tend to be the ones that drop out and don't make use of college. Most of the time the students either can't afford to go to a university after high school or don't know what they want to do after high school. Community colleges are now the norm and better to go, you save money then after 2-3 years, you can transfer to a university for the next 2-3 years depending on your credits. I wish people would stop making community college look bad because of a few bad people who didnt take it seriously

From where I live, there's an express transit bus that makes it's first stop near a community college and it's terminal stop at the university and of course same way back. So take a wild guess what are the chances students from both schools will party in the same district?

I agree with the studying part. When I graduated high school, I wasn't the best when it came to studying. It showed in my grades especially when I got to college. It got to the point where my GPA wasn't high enough for me to return to college the next year. So I decided to take some time off to figure out what I want to do with my life. I just finished my junior year of High School a few days ago and I'm kind of freaking out about being a senior once summer is over 😂 I'm 17 and High School has flown by like crazy. When I finish High school, I plan on going to a local community college for 2 years and then transferring to a university junior year of college. I'm sooo nervous about it. Since my Freshman year, I've kind of always dreaded graduating because I'm so scared of independence and growing up so hopefully community college helps a little bit rather than a university

David Oliveros community college is not hard! If you’re getting A+ you clearly already have a good work ethic. I did the bare minimum in high school so I had to really change my habits for college lol. If you’re choosing the cc path you’ll be even better prepared and have a smooth transfer if you’re feeling like you’re not ready. But don’t waste time, go to college right out of high school if possible. whichever route you choose.

If you look for help in community college it'll benefit you in the end. Currently, at a 3.8, I'm planning on transferring by fall 2020. Getting my first year free, and if I maintain a 3.0 I'll also get the second year free. By then I'd graduate from CC and have transferred to a UC, or CSU. The community college has its perks like saving up money so by the time you transfer you'd use the financial aid saved up to pay for the last two years in college, less debt means less stress. People look down on community college students because you're seen as a failure but it isn't the case. Just play your cards right and you'll be good.

These are some great tips! Especially building a good relationship with the professor and budgeting money. I will make sure to not take these for granted. I'm a senior here who is about to graduate from HS. I have a lackluster GPA (3.8 weighted (3.0 Unweighted)/5 scale). I didn't get any scholarships or grants so I'm attending CC to save money and taking pre-requisite classes on the low as well as get my A.S. degree. Then transfer to uni to study business or IT. My concern is being lonely when I do transfer to uni. By the time I enter my major, that's when everyone had already formed their group of friends and I will most likely live off campus (apartment housing). Meaning less interactions/connections of people. Any tips to make friends when you transfer to uni? And how to apply for internships? I know it's early for me to think about these things but it's good to know :) Much appreciated. Other than that, I will get on that college grind!!! LET"S GOOOOOO!!!!!
@NereStyle
@NereStyle 6 жыл бұрын
So cool to hear how excited you are about your schooling. And yes I totally understand your concern, it's relevant to me too..But consider that once you do transfer there will be a whole community of transfers just like you. Making friends won't be too hard because once you transfer you're going to be taking classes with people in your own major. So you guys will have a lot alike! at least the same passion so don't worry too much. Good luck in CC, knock out all your classes and get out of there asap! lol as far as internships you would have to look into that depending on your school.

Anyone transferring to a university after their first two years need to establish a good relationship with their instructors while they are in CC. Talk to them after class, participate in class, go to their office hours. These are the people that will help you write a good recommendation letter when you apply to transfer. I went to a community college for two years and I didn’t really like it that much. Education wise. I did learned a lot in some classes and some did not. What Community College lacks a lot is the actual college experience. It a good place for education. But now I Transfer over to a University and it so much better. I agree it harder. But because University offers so much more. Like events and free stuff that given to students at a University. Or all the different types of clubs or activities that happens through campus. There pros and cons to both. But when you think about it, someone who attends a community college, will still get the higher education but miss out in the other things. Going to a university might be tough when it comes to classes but you be able to have some fun which is really different from a community college.

I went to CC near my home in the Silicon Valley. My CC instructors were also teaching at Stanford, Cal, Santa Clara University, and SJSU so I received an education at CC similar to one at a university for a fraction of the cost. Also, qualifying for the CA Board of Governors grant meant even more savings. Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, the 'Harvard of Community Colleges' makes it easy to transfer to a UC, CSU , private school, or out-of-state school with all their college fairs. I'm a big believer in the great value of CC's, but do your research, not all of them transfer credits easily.

I want to be a writer and I don’t think I need to pursue an education further than an associates degree.. plus I can’t see myself spending another four years in school. IM NOT a school person . To be fair, the classes you take at a community college to transfer are "general education"/introductory/survey courses. When you transfer, you're taking upper-level courses in your major, which are naturally harder. The people I know who attended a university for four years said the last two years are a lot harder and they had less time to party or socialize.

Jacqueline Yep. It's the same curriculum as someone's first two years at university. It's the same classes. I have an AA degree and will be transferring next year. I hear a lot of different answers about how much harder upper division classes are. I expect the work to be harder but hopefully not too much harder! But I know that you aren't taking any weed out classes and the classes will be much more interesting as they are your major classes in the upper division level.

I want to major in (mass) communication, can't I get my degree from a community college or do I have to transfer?
@NereStyle
@NereStyle 7 жыл бұрын
You can get an associates degree, certification, or an associates to transfer degree with emphasis in communication. However your bachelor degree in mass communication is achieved in a 4 year university. If you decide to get an associates before transferring you would increase your likelihood of getting accepted to a 4 year university, and you'd probably be well versed in your field :)

I would love to be done with College by 22, but I don’t see that happening any time soon. I also want to transfer to a 4 year college someday but it seems so far off. I’m dreading taking Math and science Classes. I also don’t feel like I’m getting anymore independent and I’m jealous of my other friends. I don’t feel like I’m getting the full experience

Hi Julia, don't worry about age girl! I'm 24 and BARELY transferring to my junior year of college to a university. Community colleges have resources that you can find where they give some students a chance to meet with counselors more often (they guide you with your classes), more time during tests and in some cases modified assignments. Programs are designed to help students succeed. If you don't like math (like me) and science there are plenty of majors that require very little math & science. Find the right major for you and good luck!! :)

NereStyle101 thank you. I think what it is that there is a stereotype or expectation in our culture that we finish high school at 18, graduate college at 22 and then we have to get a job by a certain age and be married by a certain age. I am Currently in a liberal arts program which they said is the easiest transder. I’m also jealous of my friends living it up at college. I want to pursue a communications degree. I think community college also has this negative connotation around it. Thanks for your advice!

NG Platinum That’s such a smart route to go. I went to community college straight out of high school and transferred my credits to a university, and it was the best decision I could’ve made. I took the same gen-Ed’s I would have at a 4 year, but at a cheaper rate. In the end, I personally loved the community college I attended and would’ve never left, had I had the option to pursue a 4 year degree there.

This really all depends on your work ethic and major/classes. College is mostly papers and midterms, not all classes have homework but it still requires a lot of work/studying to earn good grades. While other classes are homework based and easy.The main difference between high school and college I would say is that in high school your grade is derived from so many assignments and test that you have a lot of opportunity to "raise" your grade. In College one exam can make or break your grade.

I'm going to go against the grain. I don't have the intellectual ability as someone from Harvard or even UCLA. That is just a fact. I have disability that impedes me from learning extremely abstract ideas. Without a dumbed down version of quantitative reasoning classes, it would basically majestic it nearly impossible to pass such classes. That's why I do attend. As a person with an invisible disability, I naturally couldn't careless about how educated or smart a person is. Anyone who belittles anyone's idea of self-worth need to re-examine their own sense of values. In the end, the need for competition is absolutely meaningless if it dues not bring up the morale and general vitality of an environment. There are environments that express healthy competition (we are capitalist after all) and then their is toxic environmental that stop of the rapid process of personal growth and development as society. Being a student is not a social identity nor is a student a race or a gender. However, when people marginaliz others based upon a sense of dominant privilege, we end up with a social problem. But what is the social problem? Although students that go to Harvard University that marginalize community college students is not exactly really a problem and just resembles adolescent behavior, the root is far deeper than "oh. I'm better than you because I went to Harvard." What we have here in the marginalizing of one's class (no, not your academic year-lol). We see this same behavior when it comes to making fun of homeless people or students who are poor and wear the same clothes everyday.. You may think that someone boasting about their education is just snotty behavior, but what they really are doing, and don't even know it about it, is attacking your social class identity. Like I said, being a college student is not a social identity and all people of various income levels go to a CC. Nevertheless, the dominant attitude of playing the popularity game is just a way people can mahe fun of your social status. Hence the behavioral patten of making fun of a person with a community college degree is the same attitude someone uses to attack someone's social class When people display dominant attitudes about ones social identity, specifically class, that us when the environment becomes toxic, just as smelly as male machoism. Yeah, giving someone a hard time about someone's educational status may seem like a a normal delinquent behavior that is absolutely harmless, but in the end is extremely toxic. It may not be as terrible as saying "hey, bumb, get a job," yet it as the same effect. If something is so toxic suchlike this, I ask myself, why do humans enjoy such unecessary boasting that belittles other people. College students generally want to do good. They want to improve society to mahe it better. Yet at the same time, they are unknowingly participating as agents of agression that marginalize other students just based on educational status. Forget about talking about race, age, gender, if they cannot even fully acknowledge a d deal with one of the easier social problems that should be EASY to discuss --- differences of class. While statements like "haha. You went to a CC," mat seem harmless, it is extremely toxic since they are making fun of your identity. That should not be tolerated. That's why I say I don't care what people may think. I am proud if my accomplishments and the challenges I had to overcome to get my associates degree. It's a victory for me. Yes, I took precalculus at my CC and I had to take 3 times. So what? Their opinion is irrelevant because in the end all that matters is my opinion because their opinions bare absolutely no weight on my decisions. Only the people that matter in my life have substance. This concludes my lecture for tonight. I have an Associates in Arts transfer degree and will obtain a certificate in visual communications.

Hi, I know this comment is late but I'm a high school junior right now and I'm thinking of going to community college later. Sometimes I have a hard time deciding if I really want to go to one or not because I don't want to feel like I'm missing out on the "college experience". But at the same time, I don't want to spend too many years paying off loans and debts. Plus my grades are average and I don't think I'll be getting any outstanding scholarships anytime soon. I'll see where life takes me in the future but for now, I think CC might be better for me than university.

Either way I hope you enjoy your young years and create great memories for yourself :)

@alexandramistak937

It should be relatively easy. Many state colleges have direct "articulation agreements" with local community colleges to ensure all classes transfer (e.g. when you get to a 4-year university you will start as a Junior) and there is a smooth transition. Depending on where in the US/ world you want to study, the best way to know how easy or difficult it will be is to speak with your CC adviser as well as an adviser at the school you wish to transfer to. Overall, great work saving money at CC first! Good luck!
