I recently added two Honey Gourami, one red and one gold, to a heavily planted species only Ember Tetra tank. Only having the Embers in the tank was beautiful, but it lacked a little personality. Not only do the Honey Gouramis have great personalities, but they brought out more personality in the Embers. The Embers seem to really enjoy having them in there. Great video guys, always a pleasure to watch your content!

How many tetras do you have in your tank and what size is it? I was just looking at getting some honey gouramis today but I’m new to the hobby and I’m afraid of overstocking!
@michaelhokie
@michaelhokie 2 жыл бұрын
@@madisonhanson7244 That would probably be a better question for Jason and Joanna to answer. I know that several of their stocking suggestion per tank size videos feature Honey Gourami or you could hit them up in one of their live streams. Personally, I did 1 Ember Tetra per gallon and one Honey Gourami per 10 gallons in this case because both species stay small and I do heavily planted tanks with fast growing plants that soak up excess nutrients. My tank could be considered overstocked by some, but I think as long as the fish are healthy and happy, you keep up with water changes, have live plants, and stock with fish slowly to let beneficial bacteria keep up...it is okay.

I've been deciding whether I want a species only or community tank and realized it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a tank that focuses on beauty, and has a synchronisation, go for species only. If you want a tank that focuses more on personality and how the fish interact in an environment, go for community

I've owned so many types of aquarium fish over the years before taking a break to focus on (and do a proper job) raising kids. I'm glad that I have had those varied fish experiences as I have now returned to the hobby and focusing on species only tanks. For one, I know which fish behaviors I enjoy most based on my personal experience (versus watching a KZbin video - no shade). Secondly, it's a wonderful excuse to get more tanks - I'm grateful that I have the space and means to do so. A community tank is a better choice with limited space and fewer available funds. In the end, whichever you choose (or both), it's a great hobby :)

Community imo. Even if it's only 2 types of fish. More variety and colour and lots of diversity unless the fish need tanks for themselves like shelldwellers and other specialist fish. I tend to slightly overstock my tanks but I do lots of regular water changes and have good filtration

My favorite part about the species only tank (other than easier to breed) is if I buy all the same fish from one person I don't need to quarantine. Where if I buy either same species from two different places or two different species for 1 tank, i would have to quarantine. Only fish I add to my species only tank is a baby super red bristlenose pleco. But even those I keep an eye on because the will eat other fish eggs.

I prefer the "almost species" tank. Like 90-95% of the fish are of the same species but then theres those few centrepieces. the 100 tetras schools tighter because they live with a raindow shark and a cichlid who in turn stands out even brighter because they are the only ones not sporting the tank uniform.

Agree 100% that it depends on what you're going for with a particular aquarium. Regarding bettas, I have both of my bettas in with other peaceful fish. I may anthropomorphising, but I think that the bettas are happier and more active being with other fish.

I have both. As ya'll said there's pros and cons to both, but honestly I don't think I could give up my community tanks if push came to shove. Just watching the various fish doing their fishy thing in a community tank is so cool. Then again a species only tank you do get to see a lot more natural behavior from that fish. So yeah, that's why I have both and probably always will. Have a great week ya'll. 👍❤👍

I have a mix 125 - schooling fish - rummy nose, Brilliant Rasporas, danios, silver tip tetras, bronze Cory's, 5 male sail fin Mollys - very active vibrant tank. I wanted a species only Cardinal Tetra (and melini cords, so dual species), but the tetras stayed hidden. Added white cloud minnows for top, cardinals are mid/bottom, The minnows got the tetras to come out - 40 cardinals / 20 minnows in a 40b. I love it. Water temps with the minnows are not 100% compatible, found that out after - but it's working. Have another dual species: Harlequin raspora and X-ray tetra. They are very active - moved the cardinals away from the rasporas - they seemed a little too active in the 32 flex for the cardinals. I think a single species that isn't an "all over tank" can be hard, you can end up with some empty space, especially if its a smaller fish in a larger tank. Love your channel!!

My 55g is a community tank all is peaceful except the occasional tantrum from my blue gourami lol. For the most part the rest of the tank inhabitants get along just fine. My harlequins are active but pretty chilled but the mollies are so busy all of the time. The plecos I only see after lights out. The Danios are hyper. The frogs are just scouting for food. The gold gouramis just glide around gracefully. The mystery snails are all over the place. It's such a mish mash of activity. I keep bettas mostly males and my species only is my kribensis.

Tank size is also a factor. In a 20-gallon you could comfortably keep 10-15 small tetras with a Bristlenose. In a 55-gallon you might keep 2-3 deferent tetra species in schools of 10-15 each, with a school of Corydoras and a pair of Bristlenose.

A _species only_ tank has been a blessing and a curse. For starters, it is a blessing because my CPD's breed year-round. The curse is that they breed _year-round_ which leads to considerably more work on my end. These tanks were never meant to be "for profit" and yet they net me a healthy sum. FWIW, my CPD tank only has two other occupants and they are a pair of _Hara jerdoni_ plus a small community of Pink Ramshorn snails. The two "Kitty Sharks" as my wife calls them, have been doing a phenomenal job of keeping the snail population in-check. For a while I was concerned about feeding the _Hara jerdoni_ being that they are strictly nocturnal. Since I rarely sleep more than four hours at a time, it allows me to spot feed them some thawed brine shrimp in the middle of the night. Like I said, in the beginning I was deeply worried that they were not getting enough to eat. That was until I found some of their excrement piles with these teeny-tiny snail shells embedded in them. This proved to be a happy accident so to speak. Although, I do still strive to spot feed them whenever possible. It is, however, nice to know that they can and will sustain themselves if need be. Nonetheless, I was hoping that the _Hara jerdoni_ would start breeding for me too. But alas, that has yet to happen if it should happen at all. Stay classy my friends.

I have 2 community and 3 betta tanks. I’m dying to get an all white cloud minou tank. I think they are the cutest and like how hardy they are. Just need to find a space for them! I have a 5 gallon ready but I would think they prefer 10?

Finally (supply was a problem of course) set the fluval flex 32.5 gallon tank how I like…hatchet fish, otos, white clouds, harlequin rasboras, julii Corys, mystery snails, amano shrimp and the stars of the show Pond Snails (💩). Plants…Yes. Ps. Forgot the neon tetras and the algae…

@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for the reply! I was off on the timing, the fish appears @ 2:05. Looks like a Triple Tail, but I thought those are a marine species and are known to reach a couple feet in length.

When I test my tank I want ammonia, nitrate and nitrite all under 29 ppm ?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
You want zero for ammonia and nitrite and less than 20ppm nitrate. That indicates a fully cycled tank.

You say community tanks have fish from different regions of the world with different water parameters. I thought that 95 % of all fish sold to hobbyists are farm raised and have never seen their natural environment.
