The Splatoon community has actually changed my life. I joined the Splatoon sub-Reddit, which led me to a post about a Splatoon Discord server, which led me to meet one friend of mine, who invited me to a different server, where I found my closest friends and the love of my life. So I completely agree that this community is incredibly important.

It’s so discouraging because it feels like our modern society had been designed specifically to destroy third places and really any form of communal fulfillment. People with friends and hobbies have less time to work daily 8 hour shifts.

One quick thing on third spaces: They are spaces where a person can exist *without needing to spend or earn money*. So a coffee shop and gym don’t actually count in this case because to be there is a requirement to spend money to use the space.

Such an important topic. And thank you for shouting out card shops! They're the backdrop of a lot of the tabletop side of gaming, be it card, boarding, or tabletop rpg. . . and many of them play video games too. I know back where my parents are many of the local card shops have enough support to also carry video gaming things. . .be it games, or consoles or other things. I'm sure other such shops exist that would likely be able to at least get people in touch with others in the area that share the same interest.

Hey, this video means a lot. I've played all of the splatoons off and on, only in the past month truely deciding to dedicate consistant time and effort to improving in splatoon 3 as well as interacting with the community. Recently I've found the my mental health had been declining and I was losing motivation to do anything. While I knew that it was due to a lack of interaction with others I didn't know how to improve it and was scrabling. Now I understand that I was leaving people at my 2nd place, returning to my 1st, only to want interaction there as well. What I truely need is a 3rd place, just as you explain. While I would like the splatoon community to be it, I think I'll scout somewhere physical first. Leave the house and explore, even when there might not be any reason to. Thank You.

Now we’re friends and we understand eachother much better now, if it wasn’t for S3 I probably just would’ve never gotten to know him better and I would’ve just blindly disliked him

i know of local, in person splatoon communities in my general area and i wish i could go to them. the main issue is that by 'my general area' i mean in the major city that takes several hours to get to. one of the things i dislike the most about living in a tiny town is how difficult it is to form communities out here. theres very few things out here that could be third places, and the few that are almost always have problems with bigotry in my experience.

The thing with Nintendo is they're extremely by-the-book when it comes to any legal matters. And mods, *technically speaking,* aren't entirely legal. While most companies just ignore it, since legal or not it doesn't hurt them, Nintendo prefers to keep it all fully legal. This is also why stuff like Palworld, or Oceanhorn, can exist without Nintendo taking action; players might look at them and think they're ripoffs, but they're still doing everything in a way that's 100% legal.

Back when Splatoon 3 came out, I really wanted to find other people to play with at LANs with, like I had done for years with Smash 4 and Ultimate. However, I quickly came to recognize the investment cost (8 docks + tvs + etc) to run a LAN, and realized that I couldn't organize such a thing. I asked around and tried to make organizations like local Facebook groups and Discord servers, but it didn't go anywhere, and I deleted them after I moved. Is there anywhere I can find a directory of local groups/servers? Smash has the r/smashbros directory of local communities, Splatoon is far more niche but it would be really cool if I could pick a location and find out about its scene (if it has one).

I don't like being part of the splatoon community. A big benefit of online communities that I love is anonimity, you can discuss something you love with likeminded people and once you're bored you can just move on to a new interest with a clean slate. In a game like smash or pokemon you can just go to a local, compete and have a fun time, and you can leave or come back whenever regardless of your skill level. Can't do that in splatoon where you constantly have to prove your level, your achievements etc. in order to get three people to decide they want to play in a team with you. Online communities where everyone tries way too hard to make a name for themselves often end up with cultish behaviour.
