I see the valve guide cutter only the OD of the guide, does it/can it cut the height. Need to increase guide to retainer clearance. Is there a video on how to set it to do that and is there a part#?

The guide cutter also reduces the height of the guide. Unfortunately there isn't video that shows this, so when cutting the guide you will have to judge how much needs to come off and just go slow. Thank you.

Nice video. I like how you guys make things so clear. I have a question. I recently bought a pair of Chevy '186 heads (for a clone 1970 Z-28 motor). Someone had previously machined the seat pockets with a 1.47 OD cutter. I'd like to run as close to stock parts as I can (stamped rockers, Z-28 '178 cam, Z-28 valve springs and so on), so when an old timer hears it run, the mechanical cam, rockers, and everything will clatter properly as they did back in the day. Can I still run stock diameter springs and retainers on these heads as long as the shims (if any) match the pocket diameter? Thanks!

Shouldnt be an issue main thing is that the shims dont walk sideways under the springs , shims should hav ID that matches guide OD

For cast iron GM Vortec heads, which cutter do I need to reduce the height of the guide boss by .030", keeping the OD at .560"? Also, it looks like material must be removed form the lower, larger diameter part of the boss to allow the seal to sit lower.

You would need to use a valve guide cutter to lower the height, but we do not offer a .560" guide cutter. The most common one our customers use is part# 4726, which cuts the guide to .530". You will also need an arbor part# 4732.The .530" guide size allows you to use wide variety of valve seals, such as our Teflon part# 503-16 or Viton part# 529-16. Thank you.

COMP Cams What springs would you recommend with the xtreme energy 274? Will springs 981 still work?

Mikey Designs & Silk Screen I see where the Comp catalog recommends the 981 spring for that cam, and the 26981 beehive spring (with 787 retainers) as an upgrade. The beehive spring is lighter weight for more stability and is good for another .035" valve lift.

mb55chev Thank you. I understand you can install the beehive springs with their retainers and the vortices will be ready to go for more lift. If I can save a hundred dollars and achieve the same effect with these arbors, that would be well worth it. I don't mind the work.

Mikey Designs & Silk Screen I you mean GM Vortec heads, the best route there is the GM LS6 beehive springs #12499224 for $61, along with the CompCams #787-16 retainers and #648-16 locks. I think this buys you approx .050" more valve lift with no machining necessary.

With this type of cutter you don't need any. I've done alot of machining and don't use oil/coolant.

Don't do this job with a hand drill..Or a underpowered drill press. If you decide to do this job yourself. Make sure that you have your head clamped down so you don't oval out your valve guides and... use cutting oil. If you screw up bad,it's probably going to be cheaper to just get another head (s). Remember...they want to sell you a tool. Don't be a tool.

I've done a hundred heads with this tool no issues. If you wallow out a guide, you are really pushing it at an angle hard. I've done steel and bronze with great results. Just go slow and measure accurately. I never use oil and have not seen a difference either in the quality of the cut.
