That looks like the MT3608 chip which is normally found in a slightly larger board. Interesting.....many thanks, Martyn.

Interesting to know its efficiency - say compare the VA in, versus VA out. Could this one's big brother let you power a laptop (typical 19v in) from a decent sized USB power bank - like a 20,000 mAH one.

The coil on there can't be very high current capable or efficient, probably won't do more than 2A, and potentially much much less. The IC datasheet in "typical" use (probably better inductor) when stepping up from 5V to 12V is specified to reach peak efficiency of 93% at just 200mA output, though using it up to say an amp is still quite sensible. I think looking at this board, trusting it to power even an amp at 19V from 3.6V-ish would be quite a stretch! I don't think i'd be terribly comfortable powering any laptop that i can think of off this, my Atom netbook comes with a 2.1A PSU.

MT3608 clone IC. Several companies make identical semiconductor devices.
