In this video we're going to be covering the ATI 3d Rage Pro Turbo AGP
This video is sponsored by PCBway If you want your circuit board design realised and printed, You should check out www.pcbway.com/ Starting Prices as low as 5$ for a 1 or 2 layer design.
Before we start looking at the performance of the Diamond Viper V330 and Matrox M3D card, I wanted to see what the ATI 3D Rage Pro (Turbo) AGP card that came with this Compaq DeskPro is all about.
We'll be doing some benchmarks and show some gameplay, and see what this card can do.

I consider the Rage Pro (Turbo) to be ATI's first truly usable 3D accelerator. Not the worst card to have in an earlier Pentium machine.

@@kyles8524 The Rage 128 Pro / Fury Pro was decent - they faired quite well against the competition from 3DFX (Voodoo 3) and Matrox G200. The Ultra / GL versions of the Rage 128 are often downclocked a littlebit, but can easily be tweaked. It's actually my favorite "underdog" card. Phil has a great review of that specific release. What people seem to forget, is that ATI fixed a lot of the issues further down the road with driver-updates, but then most people probably already upgraded to something different. I had my Rage 128 Pro into the early 2000s until I replaced it with a GeForce 2 GTS , it faired quite well on both my Pentium 3 500MHz and my Pentium 4.

WOW this brought me back. The Rage Pro (Xpert@Work version) was the first 3D video card I ever owned. It came inside a PC I got as a high school graduation present. It was AGP2X and had only 4 megs of RAM because I didn't feel like ponying up for the upgrade stick, but it allowed me to finally play hardware accelerated 3D games. Not only did the "Turbo" drivers give me a nice performance boost, I also used a handy little program called the Rage Pro Tweaker, which allowed me to OC the graphics core to 105 Mhz and the RAM to 115 Mhz. I definitely got the most out of that little card. I tried searching for it but had no luck. If you can find that OC program I would love to see your results, just make sure to glue some heatsinks on, or at the very least you can do what I did and just keep the chassis open and point a fan inside, lol.

Yeah tnt2 and voodoo3 are far superior. This is more on the level of a voodoo1. I did found 3dmark99 numbers to be not very represenative. For example on my riva128 I only get a score of 750, while it outperforms the ATI card in every single game I tried.

I had an ATI Rage Fury Pro back in the day. I believe it was replaced with the 9800 Pro All in Wonder. I upgraded my Pentium 150 to a PII 350 with a new MoBo that failed in less than a year that lead to my P3B-F install which lasted for several years with an upgrade to I believe an 850 MHz. My 9800 Pro lasted through my subsequent P4 Northbridge upgrade. I remember Q3 being hard on the RFP as well. It was why I left the franchise, I couldn't compete. Fortunately Unreal Tournament did well.

This chip was built into the second revision of the original iMac, back in '98. For Mac games of the time (Nanosaur, Bugdom, GL Quake with RAVE option, Age of Empires), this card was more than perfect. However, I definitely wouldn't use this card for PC gaming. Voodoo2 or TNT2 Ultra would be my personal choices.

I keep my p2 450 equipped system with a voodoo2 and a somewhat not so period correct gforce3 ti200. It is nice to be able to max out the detail somewhat. The other option I kept packed neatly in the case to swap in for being more period correct was an asus tnt1. There is the occasional vintage lan party where I am and they have rules for what is period correct or not. And often the most powerful that is allowed is a tnt1 or 2.
@redleader6442
@redleader6442 3 жыл бұрын
@@wishusknight3009 That is quite handy to have the GF3 available for swapping. I do something similar, although rather than swap out the cards in my Pentium II/TNT2 or K6-2/Voodoo2 systems, I just switch to either my Pentium III/Geforce2 GTS or Pentium 4/GeForce FX 5700 Ultra systems for better frames and higher quality. I try to avoid too many part swaps if I can help it, unless something is broken or needs cleaning.
@wishusknight3009
@wishusknight3009 3 жыл бұрын
@@redleader6442 That is a good thing to do. Most of the time I don't care if I am strictly period correct. The Gforce 3 is what is in it much of the time except at the annual lan party. It seems like I am at the threshold for some early games that may not quite behave correctly on the GF3 but at this point its not big enough for me to worry about swapping out the card. If a gf1 or 2 were to fall into my lap I may even move it to that permanently. The GF3 is so under driven that its performance isn't going to be all that much better than a tnt 2 ultra or gforce1 or 2. And there are no games exclusive to 98 that really make use of the GF3 shaders either. I also have an "ultimate 98" build consisting of a p4 3.0ghz prescott on an intel 865 board. Currently it needs a different video board but I have ran an ATI 9700 (non pro) in it. This is the first computer the Gforce 3 lived in, but it got moved to the P2 so I could complete a game the lower card was crapping on. And that just sort of stayed there. But the 9700 is starting to get artifacts at times, even after a heatsink replacement and the package retainer removed. So I am waiting patiently for a gforce 6 6800 of some sort to fall into my lap. I certainly wont go out of my way to buy one. I also really don't care about the P4 as much, as its easily replaced. And I find I use the P2 more anyhow. The ultimate 98 build got assembled, had windows and some games put on it, used once or twice and put away... Oh well.

Good video sir ! But I think you missed some troubles on your PC - if you look back at drivers detail you will see that your card is actualy working at AGP x1 not x2 which limit the card a lot. - PII 350 is way too slow for that time and missing SSE instructions from PIII used on those games I use to sell those cards because cheaper than 3DFX and at least we could have more than 65535 colors and better light and details in games instead of 3dfx Vertex lightning which was making most texture look pale orange most of the time ;) Bad thing about those cards is that ATI was selling tones of variations of it to save on price for OEM etc... so you could have 2 cards with same names but not same specs (frequency of gpu, ram, etc) always avoiding ATI card labeled Compaq, HP or any other big brand as you could be sure they had lower specs that pure ATI cards.

@@RetroSpector78 The only time AGP 2x/4x/8x really helps is when you're transferring textures across the bus, not when you're running completely from framebuffer. Same deal with PCIe. @@RetroSpector78 While we're on that topic... I think the word you were looking for is "fluid" not "fluent". But don't feel bad about it. yes, it's SGRAM upgrade. under it, there are basic SGRAM modules, soldered onto the card. Probably basic is 4 MB, with upgrade 8 MB of memory.

Back in the day, most people using a graphics card like the ATI Rage Pro would have boostered up the 3D performance with a 3dfx Voodoo or Voodoo 2...Remember, the most recent driver you´ve installed dates from 2002 - after the year 2000/2001 , most graphics cards could handle the 3D-Part in most games as good as the traditional 2D-Part since DirectX slowly kicked in starting to rule the entire 3D API section....
@RetroSpector78

Yeah I think ATI suffered a lot due to bad drivers. They didn’t have the greatest cards back then (3dfx and later nvidia were king), but combining mediocre hardware with bad drivers wasn’t ideal.

I was always hugely let down by the graphics performance of ATI. The TV stuff back in the day was fun and it was fine as a display card. Having to change things in BIOS, Bugs, Driver issues, crashes. I know it was win 95 win 98 era but CMON. You'll be fine playing diablo and starcraft, etc with em though. Beat the heck out of the S3 and VIA motherboard chipsets of the era though, but that's not saying much, that's sad.

fpga design of cpu emulation, just-in-time core rewiring per instruction, not many fpga cells needed per instruction, ie, mul, div, add etc. meaning the fpga logic cells circuit needs to implement the JIT instruction implementation, fpga-in-fpga, minimize the logic footprint in silicon, no asic arithmetic, FP16 to FP64 assumed, also INT16-64 assume, maybe 8-bit FP/INT, as example

But then that would not be period correct. And flash cards often don't do very well on windows 98 when swapping starts to occur. As lots of random writes ends up being much slower than even a mediocre platter drive. In mine I actually use a caching scsi card and 9.1 gig 10k cheetah. Then I have a larger ide drive for bulk storage. Though flash storage is certainly an option as a second drive when the OS and temp dir's are on a fast platter drive. I have never tried the ide to sata adaptors with a budget ssd though. Some tell me they are problematic for getting DMA to work.

Don’t really like SSDs for systems like this. Its got a networking card and I can get stuff from the network really fast. Did notice some swapping going on, perhaps the 64mb could use a bump to 128mb

I did the same thing with my teenage son. Only it was considered an extended loan and that I wanted it back one day in one piece. So far he has taken really good care of it and asks whenever he wants to do something to it. He has started doing airbrushing and has asked if he can do something on it, so lately it has been us deciding what would work on it, and him practicing on other surfaces. It is my original gamer I had back in the day and fully restored to the config I had around 1997. So it has sentimental meaning. And my son understands me well enough to how many conniptions I would have should he ruin it. But I am all for him painting up something nice on it.
