Comparing a published Reylo novel with the original fanfic (THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS vs. HEAD OVER FEET)

Thank you so much for doing this! I just read the book today and was really curious as to what the original fanfiction was like. It definitely felt like some things had been changed about (especially Tom Benton the moustache-twirling villain who suddenly appears and spells out his entire evil plan in public, and Anh the best friend with zero boundaries). I also assumed that the fanfiction would have been longer and had more sex scenes, because, well, fanfiction! To me, the first chapter of the novel felt very fanfic-y in the way that it just threw us into the story - of course, in a fanfic, the readers already know the characters and their relationships, but for a novel, I wished they would have established the characters and the world a bit first. Instead, a lot of the story got 'backfilled' as we're told about who everyone is and what they're like. We keep being told how mean and grumpy Adam is, but we never see that in the book - and it would obviously have made total sense in the fanfiction because the readers know that Kylo Ren is the King of Screaming at Work. I feel like this loss of context is a common theme in the fanfiction-turned-novels I've come across, and it affects some moreso than others. After went from a drama-fuelled fanfiction about a popstar which was obviously a fantasy, to what kind of feels like a romanticised tale about a girl getting drawn into an abusive relationship (and 50 Shades of Grey isn't too different!) The way readers engage with fanfiction is also very different to the reader-author relationship with a published novel. On a completely unrelated note, your eyebrows are perfect, I had so much eyebrow envy for 49 minutes! So don't feel worried about just having your face on screen!

You're dead on about former fanfics-turned-novels and context. I definitely went into this already knowing it was originally a Reylo AU fanfic -- and even knowing what a "Reylo AU fanfic" is changes the way the reader interprets and interacts with the material. (And, omg, thank you for the eyebrow compliment!!!)

Thank you so much for this!! I love the book and when I discovered that it was originally a fanfic, I was iffy to read it (knowing the fanfic community cuz I'm also a part of it lol) so thanks for the breakdown and explaining all the difference and references from each other.

Thank you so much for discussing the differences between these two! I picked up the book because I found out it was originally a fanfic and I wanted to support a new author. I never knew about her fics and I couldn't find a copy of the original to compare. I really liked how she changed things for the book. I would have loved to read the original material, but at least now I can see what it was like!

It’s definitely been taken down from the fanfic sites, but you may be able to find a PDF if you dig! I don’t have the link anymore, but I remember finding a copy that some enterprising soul uploaded to Reddit back before the book was published. 😄

First of all, petition for all videos to be 48 minutes or longer in future. You've set the trend now. This was a really fun video, it's really interesting to compare and contrast the book with the fanfiction. I've seen a few people talk about the book around the internet and had no idea it was originally Star Wars fanfic. I wonder how many other books are like that. You should do more!

I'm SURE there are other fanfics turned books -- but I happened to stumble across this one and just couldn't let it go! If I stumble across another one that seems fun, I'd definitely do this again. Oh man, I have another video that'll end up being really long that probably won't post for a WHILE yet. I need to pull clips from two movies and a short animated series, as well as some supplemental images. Despite feeling weird about this video being just my face the whole time, that actually made it waaaay faster to edit.

Okay, I have nothing of value to say, as the new star wars films and romance fanfics are both a bit over my head. (episodes 1-3 should be glad I accept them with 4-6) But I did enjoy the presentation, and alllmost want to read it myself for the lolz. And if I can watch Lindybeige's face for an hour, I can certainly watch yours. :-p

I read both Love Hypothesis, and knew Ever_So_Reylo (Ali Hazelwood's AO3 handle) but it wasn't until recently that I put two and two together and found out THAT E_S_R and ALI WERE THE SAME PERSON???? I hated Love Hypothesis, but I loved Ali's other fanficitons lol. So I read the original Head Over Feet fic and yeah... I just liked it way better lol. Funny how that happens

I found Reylo to be weird after Rise of Skywalker. If Palpatine impregnated Shmi with the Force then Rey and Kylo would be half-cousins once removed or something.
