Thanks for an excellent ,instructuonal video. Really great to see the uses actually demonstrated instead of just spoken of. Your presenting style is warm and engaging, this has been the best SAK video ive seen in a long while . 👍

I personally think that if you are going to carry a Victorinox it should have at least, 1) large blade 2.) small blade 3.) saw 4,) awl 5.) scissors 6.) can opener/screw driver 7.) cork screw. The Huntsman would be the smallest I would go when wearing casual wear. But my top choice is the Victorinox Swiss Champ. The Champ fits in the coin pocket of most pants and even in the regular pants pocket I do not find it too bulky. Also I have used the pen in the Champ a few times already and the magnifying glass is a must if you have trouble reading cooking instructions on packages like I do. If I was wearing a suit then I may go with a smaller and thinner models. Otherwise there should be no hesitation in carrying the Champ. It is not as bulky as you think it is. I have cell phone, wallet, lighter, and a mini Altoid tin in my two front pockets and the Champ in the coin pocket just above the pocket I keep my cell phone. I would love to collect every single Victorinox out there but if I had to pick one for everyday carry, I pick the Champ. I have my gf the Huntsman for Valentines day which she carries in her purse.

I would certainly be impressed if someone pulled a swisschamp from their pocket. I find the explorer to offer some of the benefits of the swisschamp including the magnifier, that I too, have found extremely useful. Thanks for providing your insight.

Funny ... and, you will have to decide when you want the extra tools or when you want a very thin SAK that will almost disappear in your pocket!

The Sportsman is a really cool model, and one of the least expensive...making it good to throw in a glove box or somewhere else it could get stolen. Another very similar one is the Evolution 10, from the Wenger factory. I think the Sportsman has a better nail file but the Evolution has a better bottle opener (never slips off the cap).

Glad you mentioned the Evo 10 as the Sportsman pulls much from it. Wenger really supported the smaller form too.

Always wondered when they changed the design, as i have 2 older Vic sportsman knives and both have the diamond nail file. I prefer that to the "file" like nailfile i see in most videos that show newer Vic knives.

Great comparison! Can you confirm (as you seem to at 2:04) that the new Sportsman (with the new style nail file) has the half-stop on the bottle opener? The Sportsman has been one of the few current models that historically DOESN'T have this feature, and I haven't been able to get confirmation from others if it has finally been upgraded. Thanks in advance!

I have a Sportsman with the new style file that I bought new earlier in '22 and it does have the half stop on the bottle opener.

Thanks for your great informational videos! Love my Sportsman, because of it's compactness.I noticed the keychain holder moves back and forward slightly and not staying snuggly (Maybe that's because holder is a separate part and not on aluminum scale. It is between scale and a nail-file) . Is this any issue?

Thorough and clear explanations. Thanks! :) I am assuming you know of Nikos Doulas NikGyver, Felix Immler and MeZillch? They also have really neat "SAK hack" and mod videos! I've been watching 'em over the last couple of weeks, now that I've decided to buy a Victorinox RangerGrip 79, and likely going to buy a SwissChamp somewhere in the near future! When I first saw the corkscrew on the SAKs, I was a bit turned off and thought this would not be useful for me, since I don't drink alcohol / wine! Now that I've seen their videos, and yours, it has made me specifically seek out models of SAKs with corkscrews on them to buy. Tortoise Gear makes the FireAnt for that! And I am glad they make the FireFly for the toothpick hole. I hope Victorinox makes a diamond blade sharpening rod for the toothpick hole in the future. That'd be a far more useful tool for most people, since everyones blade is going to dull with more use. The toothpick is useful, sure, but the blade sharpener would be typically way more useful!

Thanks for the very useful comment. Yes, I have in some earlier videos included both Felix Immler and NikGyver as references as they are indeed SAK Pioneers. Much appreciate the reminder.

I might mention that RangerGrip 79 has a longer corkscrew, much like the Swiza, so it will be easier to do either the 3/32 inch ferrocerium fire starter or sewing kit mods. I personally find that the 'one hand' opening feature does make carving with the knife less comfortable for the thumb than a straight-back blade. Might consider a pouch too, it's a big SAK. Enjoy.

Love the Sportsman over the Cadet! The additional tools make it a better EDC option. What do you think about the Waiter? Almost a "compact" Compact?
@resilienthacks7038
@resilienthacks7038 3 жыл бұрын
I sure see your logic for single layer minimalism and the desire to keep the toothpick and tweezers. And, the corkscrew gives you many options for adding tools. Thanks for contributing.

I really like the Tourist. I am tempted by the Sportsman, but I prefer a 2nd (smaller) blade to the nail file. I can use the large blade to peel fruit, and the small one to cut packages and tape on the same occasion, so I have a clean blade for food. Maybe the nail file is sufficient to cut pacjages open. After all the can and bottle openers can act as screw drivers. I don't need to file my nails when I am out, of I could use a Classic SD. If I have dirty nails for some reason, I could also use the awl or the can opener. Regarding the Cadet, I am not sure what it can do that the even more minimalist Bantam Alox can do at a much lower price (although the Cadet has 2 blades). I find the corkscrew useful. I can attach the knife to some wood or cardboard and use it to support a GoPro with a magnetic mount, or to undo knots, or actually to clean my nails! I really appreciate your videos. They complement well the Felix Immler ones.

I agree, you make very good arguments for these alternatives. I find myself at odds with what I really use and that which would be potentially more useful in broader applications. I often find myself carrying the small tinker as it meets most of my daily needs and takes very little pocket space. Yet, the newer designed nail files also make for good ferrocerium strikers and light duty work such as with wood or plastic in a pinch. And, the corkscrew is remarkably versatile in its ability to hold a length of 3/32 ferrocerium rod or perhaps a needle and thread sewing kit held in wire shrink wrap.

@@resilienthacks7038 I got the Cadet used, and I like it. I like that i can use some dyneema loop and a carabiner to secure it to my pants. I like the celidor scale ones with the corkscrew it can really be used to clean the nail as well, or to help secure the knife on a stick (could use the awl for this as well, but corkscrew would really secure it)

Waiter is very adaptable. A lot can be done with the corkscrew including tool storage and it nicely holds a 3/32 inch ferrocerium fire starter rod.
