A (probably not too big) advantage of the new design is that it doesn't seem to scratch the back side of the blade at all, or at least not as much as the old one did.
@EngineersPerspective7013 жыл бұрын
The ones I have had didn't actually scratch the blade surprisingly. The Wenger I have has the file on the opposite side for that reason but the file area is severely reduced to accommodate the nail nick.
@GregMilner3 жыл бұрын
Of course, with the new style file, you can use it to strike a ferrorod. So there is that.

Never occurred to me! Nothing else can on the knife so I’d say that’s actually a pretty significant thing to note

Happy Friday ( 05/27/22 ) EP thanks for the mention. I still to this day prefer the older style stippling on the nail file over the cross cut style of the nail file on the post 2018 Cadets & Sportsmen .

@@EngineersPerspective701 Happy Tuesday EP. At least on their Delmont Evolution 85mm range they have kept the Wenger style nail file with stippling albeit they took away the better ( IMO ) Wenger style claw can opener & replaced it with the Victorinox one. I prefer both the Wenger claw can opener & using the Victorinox Combo tool as a can opener over Vic's standard one with its silly little screwdriver tip that I have had no success in using on any type of screwhead especially with more & more gadgets nowadays using Torx screws

I have a Cadet on order. The only reason I ordered it is the new nail file. I found the Compact’s file useless. So I’ve been using the Executive. Great nail file. I assumed the old Cadet file would be similar to the Compact’s.
@EngineersPerspective7012 жыл бұрын
The old style cadet has the same texture as the compact but bigger of course. The new style is very different. Both good for sure

I’m looking to get my first cadet and I’m waiting on the sellers response because I only want the old version. The new one seems too aggressive for a good finish on fingernails and that is a dealbreaker for me.
@EngineersPerspective7012 жыл бұрын
It’s okay for fingernails but the old version is way better so it’s worth looking like you are. Enjoy it when you get it!

I very rarely use any file on any SAK so I don't have much experience with any of them. But I remember that with the old one, at least once I would have wanted the file surface to go all the way to the end.
@EngineersPerspective7013 жыл бұрын
The red cadet file is the style I've seen on all 58mm and 84mm models except for this new one of course. But I've only been into them since the beginning of 2018 and have no older models so I can't speak to those.

I have a sportsman with the new nail file and I think it is the best nail file in SAK/multitool world.
@EngineersPerspective7013 жыл бұрын
I think it can definitely do things pretty much every other comparable cannot. It does some things worse than the old version too but acceptable. So your analysis may just be spot on!

The Cadet is freaking amazing no matter what honestly!
@turing23763 жыл бұрын
Do you think this was in part a cost saving measure? In any event, at least it sounds like it works pretty good but the old one still seems preferable to me for a keychain sized tool.
@EngineersPerspective7013 жыл бұрын
It's really hard to say. I don't actually know how the applied the previous texture, some sort of rolling or hydraulic press maybe? The new one is probably a simpler machine operation so it's very possible. My honest analysis is that Victorinox did it highly intentionally to improve it in their eyes. I think it does improve in some ways but I would still take the previous version too for what I use it for. We'll see if Steve Sinclair can shed any light if he comments!

@@EngineersPerspective701 Wait, I thought the old style was a diamond file? Is "diamond file" just what it's called or do the use real diamond dust? I'm looking at my Manager file through a magnifying glass right now, and very confused about what I'm looking at.

I prefer the older version, as well. It also seemed like there was a slight taper at the tip and it works better as a small Phillips driver and staple remover. The new version is ok, I suppose.
