At the cost of an ounce or two, having a quick release on the end of your boompole can make the difference between getting a microphone switched out in time to get your dialogue. There are many different version online ranging from $21 to $137 and each one has advantages over the others. In this video I will showcase 6 shockmounts currently available on the market (at the time of this video). Discontinued and currently unavailable models will not be featured nor will quick releases that are only compatible with one boom pole or cameras.

When people complain about windjammer prices they have to realize how much of a niche product they are compared to consumer goods.

That's right. Windjammers are specialty products - a lot of money is spent on them in R&D and because they sell only a few thousand, the prices are going to have to be higher on them.

A lot to consider but in your case, I'd start with adjusting your SGS QRs. They will probably perform top notch again with 3 minutes of adjusting. They really are beautiful in design.

Allen, thank you for the video. (Now I don't have to make my own :-) I was comparing the Orca against the Sound Guys Solutions (SGS) quick releases. I have big hands, and the Orca would probably slow me down if I needed to wear gloves. The SGS has a larger release that would be beneficial. Also, while it is a simple mechanism, the SGS quick release has some subtle engineering of the cam mechanism that is not very apparent. The weights I measured were: Orca - 38.6g/1.37 oz. ; SGS - 41.1g/1.45 oz I hope that helps everyone.

Oh yeah. I remember seeing Gene's prototype and had a few issues with it and I talked to him about them. Not only was he aware but he'd already corrected them. He's his own worst critic but has turned out a solid product! I'm so happy Gene is young because he's already done so much to positively benefit the world of sound.

I was surprised to see you include the T-O adapter! It would be great to see them come out with a native 3/8” thread for sure. An added benefit, however, is if you have any of their other mounts or stands, you can use the same quick releases with those. Personally, I use the T3 and O1 for a lot of my sit down style interviews.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 5 жыл бұрын
It is a valid quick release for boom poles so why not include it? Granted I can imagine it being more popular on Indie and budget productions than top tier productions but part of the reason people visit Sound Speeds is to learn about options. All levels of sound people from lobbyists to those that work on the biggest shows come here and none of us are above learning. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how solid the IO-RA was especially considering the price point.

Wow. Nice video. Fast and informative. I was not even aware of some of the qr's eggzistance that you covered in this vid. Good work! What about that Orca qr, I've seen it at a store and held in my hand but was not quite sure about its ability to withstand a prolonged heavier boom setup (mic+windbasket+wireless butplugg). Anyone here with Orca QR experience to shed some light on this question?

Missed the panamic tip and the woods. Also on the SGS QRs they shouldn’t need adjustment when they are new and if you have multiples you have to make sure they are all adjusted the same or you’ll issues fast swapping. That is where Genes service is important I was able to send all 7 of my SGS QR to him and they came back perfectly matched and fitted.

I’ve been looking into quick releases and stumbled across this. Great information Allen. Thank you. Quick question. Because of the triad orbit’s size, would that be fine to use with a blimp on the end of a boom pole? Comparing that one with the other quick releases, I’d imagine the weight of the blimp along with the weight and size of the that quick release would make it less ideal.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 жыл бұрын
Extremely! It's very heavy in comparison to any of the others and even an ounce can make a difference on a boom. Check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKSqaItua5hpock Peraonally, I'd only use the Triad Orbit on something that I don't hand hold like comtek antennas or mic stands.
@mattxoverbey
@mattxoverbey 3 жыл бұрын
@@SoundSpeeds Wow. That is insane just how such small differences like those can effect the weight of the pole. It makes complete sense though. Unfortunately I was in an accident a few years back and the strength in one of my shoulders isn’t as strong as the other anymore so that’s something I have to consider when adding on to my boom kit which isn’t anything really extensive to start with. I’m in audio recording school and unfortunately my program doesn’t really go specifically into areas like boom operators in my courses, but your boom op videos have been a huge help in my understanding in this craft. Really love them.

@@SoundSpeeds I mean the clearance between the fixed part which is screwed onto the boom field and where there are two locking hexagon sockets and a locking mechanism. If I snap the microphone with the thorn into it, there is a small will and movement and therefore a disturbing sound

Have you ever had the Ambient QRTs lock up? It's one of the reasons I switched to the SGS quick releases. I keep them around in the instance I boom for someone with QRTs, but I'm really paranoid about mine locking up on set with a mixer's gear still attached.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, and that happens if... 1) you twist the shockmount around the QRT until it snaps in place for itself. It's usually more difficult to remove but still doable (like in this video). 2) You use it on something that bounces like a gator or 4 wheeler. The spring is keeping strong tension on the tip but when vibrated, the spring shakes the tip tighter and tighter. I had to get the grips to help me loosen a QRT once and they had to use channel locks! The spring is no joke.
@AmbientRecording
@AmbientRecording 5 жыл бұрын
@@SoundSpeeds Thanks for the round up. The occasional seizing is caused by friction of the tip to the collar not the spring, btw. A little grease every now and then apllied underneath the "butterfly" should effectively prevent you from experiencing this and is advised for any mechanically moving parts, anyways. Still, we are aware of it and working on countermeasures - making sure they are effectively protected against "flatterists" ;) Btw. did you get your black one already?
