Having grown roses for 40 years, I find it a bit silly to differentiate roses based on the breeder or country of origin. I am in the states and I find a lot of snobbery in the world of roses right now. The attitude of unless it's a David Austin it's not good enough, seems to drive a lot of the sales. Not much different than needing that pair of Nike sneakers or the Gucci purse. 3/4 of my more 80+ roses happen to be Kordes. Selected not only because of their beauty but also because of their superior disease resistance and exceptional long life of their blooms. Living in climate with wet springs and very humid summers, Blackspot is a big problem. A rose, doesn't look healthy or beautiful, if most of the foliage is yellowed or missing. This is why I choose to replace most of the Austin roses in my garden over the last 15 years. By the way my most prized rose at the moment is Koco Loco by Christian Bédard. It's buds are always of perfect form and the unusual latte coloring which changes to a soft lavender as it's opens, brings strangers to my door.

Lovely. But many people do insist on one breeder or one area of the world. I’ve seen it said several times. That’s without even looking at other breeders. In this video I’m saying it’s ok to look around and see what works for you and possibly room for a mix. I googled your rose and it looks divine. I can see why people knock your door as it is unlike anything I’ve seen.

Hi there! When you spoke about the soul of the rose, I hung on your every word. I agree with you to 100%. And David Austin had already said this in his great book "The Rose - The Magic of a Queen" about his view of roses. "A rose is worthless to us if it is not beautiful."

Personally, I don't buy roses without fragrance. It's so disappointing to lean over to smell a rose and discover there is no fragrance. Also, have you noticed a difference in the appearance of the shrub, especially when it is not flowering? I've heard that the David Austin roses have a more graceful appearance than other roses. Thank you for the tour and the comparison. It was a nice way to start my morning here in Billings, Montana.

Sorry I’ve only just seen this comment. Yes a lack of fragrance is always disappointing as most people including me I think this is top of their wish list. But sometimes this can happen with many fragrant roses, you bend over to smell but for whatever reason on any given day there is little or no fragrance and that is even more disappointing as you are expecting that usual lovely fragrance. I think there’s so many lovely looking roses with beauty and they come in all different shapes and sizes. I hope your having a lovely morning today:)

Good to see this comparison video, very well made and I like your balanced views. Rose breeders are cross breeding their roses with best roses of the world to improve their roses and DA roses are no exception. In other words, today’s DA roses may have some traits of Kordes, Meilland or Olesen. As a gardener, I am enjoying the roses from DA, Kordes, Meilland. By the way I have recently added Amadeus in my collection.

Amazing video! It's about time those comparisons are made! I'm not a big fan of David Austin roses in general because I feel that Mr. Austin focused too much on developing beautiful flowers at the expense of an attractive garden worthy shrub. Aside from a few exceptions, most Austin cultivars are lanky, leggy growers with poor architecture and weak droopy necks, which explains why they do best planted in groups. Having said that, I do count my personal Austin favourites in one hand as I believe that there is an Austin out there for anyone willing to put in the effort - especially growing them in cold climates and allowing them at least 3 years to get established. Opinions will vary depending on what works well in one's climate and what rose speaks to one's soul. Kordes is currently coming out with beautiful sturdy shrubs sporting old fashioned blooms to rival any Austin/English rose to date. I just adore their Parfuma and Fairytale series roses. They're also coming out with new disease resistant hybrid teas and floribundas that will render the disease riddled cultivars of the 50's, 60' and 70's obsolete. Thanks for this video 🌹

Hi Dee, you speak the truth. I wanted to make this video because perhaps... well let me tell you about my aunt. 😀😀. There is no way my aunt would want .. foreign roses in her garden. Period. I have bought her (and planted) some of these foreign roses Without her knowing of their origin. I’m sure she will fall in love with them. Perhaps I will film her when I tell her where they originated from. And perhaps this does go on elsewhere. There are some fantastic Rose breeders out there from all over the world. We should want what’s best for us and our gardens. There are perhaps just the most subtle of differences that could suit many people. The more I think about it the more I think I will film my aunt when i tell her. Her jaw may well drop but hopefully she will still love the roses like she did only moments before. :)

@@otchsigua8223 hi otch I couldn’t help but read this and think of your lovely former home and all those roses left there. Tragic. But at least now an opportunity for you to build again and perhaps a slight salvage from the sad situation. If I can add also I have some young Eden’s and the flowers do last a long time. 2 maybe even 3 weeks but they are very droopy for me. The oldest one I have this is only it’s second summer. The only way I can get the flowers to stand up is in a very short vase. Best of luck in your new garden :)

@@otchsigua8223 Hello there and thank you for asking. Here in zone 4 Canada, I keep the florist varieties at a minimum in my garden considering the work involved in winterizing them. Florist varieties don't survive our winters on their natural roots and must be grafted on the appropriate understock with their bud unions planted deep. Winter also dictates how much damage we prune, where most florist varieties are pruned down as low as 2" at the base. Aside from a limited number of florist roses, my current rose collection comprises a mix of zone appropriate old European garden types (ie; Albas, centifolias, gallica, damask, portlands, hybrid perpetuals), species, rugosas and a few modern shrubs. Having said that, my favourite florist roses for cutting are ones that I currently grow, as well as some that I've grown in the past. They include Imperatrice Farah (Strawberry Parfait), Stephen's Big Purple, Double Delight, Garden Delight (floribunda), Kardinal, Westminster Pink, Tiffany, Red Devil, Kordes Perfecta, White Success and Yves Piaget. Grandifloras include Philatelie, Summer Sunset (France Libre) and Marie-Caroline.

@@otchsigua8223 Eden should do quite well in your climate and as cut flower. I should mention that the Trianon portland, 'Yolande d'Aragon', has remarkable fragrance and holds moderately well in a vase. Also the small climber, 'Cherry Frost' with flower clusters that last forever on the plant and exceptionally in a vase 🌹

When I moved, in mid December (rom Portland, Oregon to Northern Washington) I took cuttings from each of my roses, at the very last minute the day we left. I dipped each cutting in rooting hormone, planted them right, in the soil of my new garden and placed a large glass jar, like a cloche covering each one ~ the next Spring, every one had leafed out, I removed the jar and they were rooted. Now I had own-root cuttings, of all my favorite roses, to replant in my new garden ~ They had successfully moved, right along with me :o)

I'm in Ontario, Canada at the border of Canadian plant hardiness zone 5a/4b (roughly equivalent to USDA zone 4) & I have a Mary Rose & two Eglantines which I've never "mounded up" or protected for 20+ years & 11-12 years, respectively. Most years they survive undamaged at least a foot above ground. Meanwhile, countless hybrid teas & floribundas have succumbed to winter, unless they were carefully mounded up, which is quite a chore & something I'm trying to get away from. (Even then, they usually survive, only to the soil(mound) level. David Austin Roses are more winter hardy than the others, in my garden. (Mary Rose & Eglantine are older varieties so perhaps DA's newer ones are less winter hardy? (But a more recent Darcey Bussell has been mounded up for a few winters & it's survived a little above the soil/mound which is a good sign.) I planted several Summer Romances & Tranquilities this spring (2024) & I noticed that Summer Romance kept its leaves longer & that "juicy" look to it's canes longer into the fall, than the David Austins, which makes me a little concerned about it's winter hardiness. Time will tell. *Thank you for creating & sharing all of these beautiful & inspiring videos. You're truly one of the treasures of KZbin.*

I bought my GJ and the scent is amazing! One bud had broken off in transit and I have it next to my desk so the smell wafts over me, I recommend this rose to everyone on the grounds of the scent. I'm an utter novice but have filmed a very short boring short of one of my DA's and uploaded it, as there doesn't seem to be anything about it on KZbin already. And I agree about the Kordes, they are able to shrug off the weirdness of the British Spring/summers!

Dear Jay, as a person living on the old continent and have no pressure to buy Austin rose, I prefer others. Meilland also have many strictly selected varieties through the history to today. Poulsen, Delbard, and many independent rose farms offers from time to time very special varieties. It’s just personal preference but I really think we are free to enjoy rose itself than “stories” or “companies”. It’s very nice to see you enjoy more different roses! Why not 😆 If you like other Kordes or Meilland rose from its photo, especially from recent years, I recommend you just order it. It’s selected, it’s hard tested. They are more worry free.

Hi Hina yes I don’t care where my roses come from. Like many people I just want the best for my garden. The breeder or there origins makes no difference to me. I have zero alliance or loyalty to any and I’m comfortable with that. I do see some very subtle differences between some of the Rose breeders and having a mix of them I am very happy with. Some people may prefer one breeder over another and have learnt that through there own experience and that’s fine also. But for me there are so many breeders doing great jobs a mixture for me is good.

It doesnt have anything to do with the roses being german but it has to do with what the rose species is derived from. Different categories. Floribundas, tea roses, Bourbon Roses etc. One if the reasons why most Austin roses arent great for vase cutting in comparison, whereas tea hybrids tend to be. Most brands are a bit more transparent or maybe suttle with their marketing than David Austin. I prefer the air of Austin roses, better names for sure, but it is after all marketing.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 жыл бұрын
Hi ach. I can’t help but think there is a little something Germanic about the kordes roses. Wether they have done things differently from the ground up or a little higher I think it shows and perhaps kordes will be happy with that and deservedly so. The marketing of kordes is nowhere near as slick as DA, the name changing of roses around the world by kordes has not helped them in my humble. It’s just marketing I agree, but DA are shrewd enough to know it’s importance :)

Well, to be honest i only like roses with scents and larger blooms. The difference i feel between the two roses. The Kords has an abundance of flower, be them small and no smell. They look more healthier and stronger upright stems, than the D.A roses. I have found many D.A. roses, unable to withstand our British weather! The disappointment also found that D.A. especially since 2020, I've received poor stock from them, and this often causes many more unnecessary issues. Such as my Poets Wife a 3 yr old standard, which originally i received this with extremely feeble stems. That although i kept cutting them back to hopefully strengthen branches. As larger blooms, when flourishing, adventually caused the whole structure, to snap into and needed replacing! Sadly, Im finding D.A. rather high maintenance and without any doubt more prone to issues, than other roses being sold on the market! But having said all of that my garden is full of some beautiful colour and amazing smells. So I'll enjoy the positive days and just except beauty comes at price!

I couldn’t have said it better Sue. What I will say is I did find last year my David Austin roses by and large tended to flower more frequently do you see that? The flushes trend not to last as long (or perhaps as much), but on a more frequent basis compared to my kordes roses. I have several kordes roses that had perhaps only 2 possibly 3 fantastic flushes. But after each flush a stagnant period of perhaps 6 weeks. This is something I didn’t really notice on my da roses. People say all of the roses are mixed during the breeding process but for me I see the differences you speak of. I’m not saying one is better than the other but differences all the same. Thanks for dropping by.

Surprised to see your GJ as a shrub. Never thought of trying that. I'm training mine in trellis and getting lots of laterals and blooms. I find the blooms last at least a week and up to ten days. I got a sweet honey as well and am excited to see it blooming, loads of buds so far but I must be a good bit north of you, it's got to be three weeks away from blooming. I also got Candyland and it's got a gnarly growth habit but the blooms last about two weeks 😵 And they're gorgeous but like SH, precious little scent

Hi there. Yes it can work as a shrub but I think it’s much better as a climber. I have her growing at the front as a climber up the wall and it’s working very well. But weather where I live flowers last only a max of 4 days I’d suggest. And only 1 possibly 2 days when they are that perfect. Best of luck with your sweet honey a great, great rose I’m finding. Mine is only supported because of the dog.:)

Hi there. I use the Pellet type rose feed from Westland’s. Also This year I used a liquid seaweed feed from envil I used it a few times. But I have to say I’m not entirely sure how much better my roses are for it over the course of a rose season. Next year I’m thinking of feeding just once with the pellet feed in early spring and see how I get on.

DA Roses here are the most expansive to buy in Nurseries and he really started a trend within the Rose Breeders here, now everybody wants to breed so called Romantic Roses, fully cupped with scent and more bushy habit, but they don't have something so special like a Jubilee Celebretion etc...so Happy Gardening and an extra treat for the beautiful Boy...🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️❤

‘It’s a rose with no fragrance’ ......for me that makes it completely a redundant ... :) looking at the Kordes rose many of the Austin roses of that colour could replace it ( and be untouched by the rain ) even the old ones like sweet Juliet for example and they all have fabulous fragrance ! Just my opinion 😎

That’s excellent, sweet Juliet is a rose I’ve never ever heard of before. It’s not on sale at the moment nor does it receive any of da own recommendations for health fragrance or flowering ability. And no mention of its ability to withstand rain. That said I don’t know the rose nor do I doubt you. :)

@@Jay_Jay I have been buying Austin roses for 30 odd years its a shame so many of the older ones are no longer available. some were more prone to blackspot so I'm guessing that's one reason they phased them out ..10 years ago their nurseries stopped spraying and so they now only supply roses that are healthier (a fairy brave decision) BUT its also a shame because blackspot IMO was only ever superficial and never really harmed the roses (I never sprayed them ) the other reason some aren't available is I'm pretty sure they just supply them to warmer climates where they grow more vigorously (USA / florida etc). I see some of my favourites on KZbin channels based abroad (Crown princess margarita, Jude the obscure, sweet juliet, st swithun , ) Also some wonderful reds and purples have come and gone - the prince, tradescent, wenlock, falstaff ......oh well ... I guess things move on, but they were as good as the old roses from the 19th century that are still available !

@@MarcieHarding you have a wealth of experience of DA. I’m still a novice like I say in the video. I can only research from KZbin, read the website or see what Rose judges have said. Falstaff is a rose I do know I grew one successfully from cutting an excellent Rose. Jude the obscure another fantastic Rose and one I was after for a long long time. @@MarcieHarding Marcia your honesty is unquestionable. THIS is why I wanted to make this video. Kordes roses aren’t for everyone. DA roses aren’t for everyone. But it’s ok to try them for ourselves to see. KZbin videos, international expert rose judges can say what they like we know what’s best in our gardens and it’s ok to look around. Many of the breeders are similar with only the very slightest of differences telling them apart. Many crossovers muddying the water further. Kordes or any other rose breeder may not be your thing but it’s ok to try. DA knock out some great roses as do kordes in my humble. Best of luck ;)

@@Jay_Jay i came across your videos they are very informative and give good insight on how the rose bushes actually look like, I just ordered some Kordes here in Australia they arrive in bare rooted form so no leaves no soil. Australia is hot and sunny and I am hoping they will do well. the only concern i have is the aphids problem. I dont see any aphids on yours how is it maintained?
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 жыл бұрын
@@calumho6253 hi Callum. I’ve never had issues with aphids until this year. Aphids would always be present on my roses but never caused any damage and as far as I could tell we’re just food for lady birds etc. The problem was this year I had a serious infestation and damage was caused to the roses. You can squash them between your fingers it can be an effective way of dealing with them. I suggest waiting to see what you have. If an infestation occurs I ended up using a teaspoon of “neem oil” and a teaspoon of eco washing up liquid to a litre of water. Make sure it’s well mixed up and spray the infected areas. I Imagine you will need to spray them same areas perhaps 3 or 4 times in as many days and the aphids will turn black and die off. As far as I know other insects will not then feed on them. But I’d wait first to see what you get, it’s only been this year that I needed to spray. 5-10 or so aphids on a rose bud I don’t think will cause damage it’s when you get a thick heavy clump with many dozens of aphids that’s when you know the life will be sucked out of the new growth. Best of luck with your roses. Plan well is the best advice I can give. Try and get them morning sun if you can I’ve found it’s better than morning shade. And don’t be afraid to plant in pots for the first year or two whilst you see what develops for you in your garden. Best of luck once again.

How to protect rose plants from Japanese Beetles?
@DovidM
@DovidM Жыл бұрын
Handpicking the beetles off your rose bushes helps a lot because it reduces their numbers. Just drop the beetles into a small bucket of soapy water. I spray the roses with Neem oil at the first sight of beetles. I have neighbors that sustain quite a bit of damage to their roses but they don’t take any action to control the numbers.

well it's a bit unfair to call kordes roses "German," when for example Earth Angel and a few others from the same parfuma collection were actually bred from expired trademark roses of David Austin. They are breeds of english roses bred in a different country to be fair. Earth Angel is a breed of Geoff Hamilton rose and "unnamed" kordes seedling which is (let me guess hehe) is another cross of a couple of DA roses. Hense why you get a very similar profile.

Hi there. Sorry for delay in responding I’ve not touched my channel for so long. I’m unsure if everyone will agree that kordes roses aren’t German. I think perhaps many companies it’s all international now and that’s a good thing. Using my car analogy again could we say for instance Rolls Royce are still a British company? Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar were all facing the same issues as british leyland. So if kordes roses aren’t looked upon as being German by everyone, but that helps get more kordes roses into peoples gardens then that’s what’s important. Rolls Royce having German owners, bmw having British designers, it’s what works. The purpose of this video was to say it’s ok. It’s ok to have both. Subtle differences in both but it’s ok regardless of origin. Thanks :)

I have fallen in love with that Sweet Honey rose! But, alas, I don't think it's sold anywhere in the US. Boo hoo! Your roses are beautiful and your observations are right on, I think. I have several DA roses and I love them, but they aren't as robust as I would like them to be - so far anyway. I have other roses from other companies are are absolute beasts and I don't have to worry about them :) The DA's....need a tad more pampering in my garden, anyway.

Hi Diana. It wouldn’t surprise me if kordes sell sweet honey in the U.S under a different name I haven’t checked that out. I mentioned earlier in the comments I need to update this because sweet honey has now thrown out a couple of perfect flowers which I’m really happy about. But that doesn’t change what I was saying, the kordes are still just a little less worrisome for me than the da roses I have. And as I tried to explain in the video that is neither a good nor bad, better or worse thing. They both have there place. :)
