Comparing different Jewish Bible translations

The Complete Jewish Study Bible (the “Messianic” one you shared last) has been my go-to Bible for the past 5 years due to the high degree of helps, commentary, footnotes and the like. It has given me a better lens into a Jewish view of the Word than I had even in seminary. Thanks for including this version.

It helped me a lot too. A Jewish Bible and a chronological Bible can do so much to help prior understanding the context that the scriptures were written in.

Have you looked at the Jewish Study Bible 2nd Edition by Oxford? That’s what I would use over Prof. Sterns Bible version.

I have looked at the Complete Jewish Study Bible a couple of times, and the notes seemed very light compared to most study Bibles these days.

Another one to look at is the Artscroll Chumash (which has more notes and commentary) or Artscroll Tanakh.

Love this video, I throughly enjoyed learning Hebrew during seminary, and I’ve always wondered what Jewish translations are like. In my Hebrew 2 class once when we finished going over irregular verbs, our professor gave us a few passages to translate for homework, and I remembered reading the ending of Genesis 2 and reading Genesis 3. I noticed the word play and found it fascinating, and it helped me to not give up on learning Hebrew and find other literary devises as I read my readers Hebrew Bible. 😊

Love the video! In addition to these translations, for those interested in an orthodox translation, I recommend the bilingual (Hebrew/English) Stone Edition of the Tanach, published by ArtsSrcoll, and especially their Chumash (Torah with commentaries), also bilingual. Would be great if you, JM, could make a review of the latter.

Another great messianic version is the NJV, New Jerusalem Version. Uses the JPS and ASV in the OT, Majority for NT.

Is it really a Jewish translation if it includes the New Testsment? After all, we wouldn’t say that ant Christian’s translation of the Bible would still be Christian if it added, at the back,the Qur’an!

@@KateGladstone that's not a great comparison because Jesus and all His first followers were themselves Jewish and never claimed to be otherwise, whereas Muslims claimed from the outset to not be Jewish or Christian. Furthermore, Buddhists and even atheists can be considered Jewish, legally and ethnically, so it's hard to make a compelling case that Jews who accept the NT (almost all of which was written by 1st century Jews) are somehow *not* Jewish as a result.

Exactly, we have manuscripts that have "Yehovah" and not even one has "Yahweh." When I hear someone call the Creator "Yahweh," it shows me they might not be familiar with the Hebrew language. Even the Jews know the name, but they have a tradition of not saying it.

sorry for the second comment, but it comes to mind that when swaying away from true translations, if people truly loved The Almighty Creator, mess like that should be made ilegal to do, not saying any of it is your fault, bringing it to our attention and knowing its out there and that it should be avoided.amazing how people rather fit there fealings over whats true and divine

"Clings to his wife" right after saying she came from his side/rib... that makes sense. The gender neutral one isn’t authetic enough... it is basically changing it to accomodate something I don't have issue with. Lits if subtlety needs time to sort out wether it can be trusted. An endless study can be made of various versions people made. I wish someone were more about being faithful to the source than seeking to be different enough for a copyright or to accomodate various recent trends. I want the witness statement to be as true to the witness's experience, context, and authentic words (warts and all) as possible. English or not. If a Bible doesn’t explain changes at each crossroads... how do we know what we are reading. There is even a CCP version that takes "no other gods before me" out of the decalogue to accomodate their politics and also has Jesus stoning an adulterer because it is more convenient to the communists to teach it wrong. We need to know what we are reading, and why the changes so we can have informed belief.

Of the Jewish Bible translations in this video, I think Alter's Hebrew Bible has the most potential to be thought-provoking for the conservative evangelical. Not to mention it has the best literary style by a wide margin, in my view. The Art of Bible Translation is a little book that's packed with insight too. Apart from Alter, Fox is fascinating in how it attempts to evoke the feel of the period, and it is useful for isolated verses or passages, but ultimately I find it's too idiosyncratic - and often intentionally so, though it can come across as if it forced an idiosyncratic reading for its own sake.

I had the blue JPS Tanakh for a while and was just not impressed with it. It seemed like any 20 or 21st century translation. Of course, I read this stuff because I find it interesting, not because any salvation is connected to it in any way. That bit you read though JM, it can be demonstrated that humans evolved from other forms, there wasn't one guy all by himself with a woman that showed up later. It is an interesting story, but only that.
