Comparing Electric Narrowboats on the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal Ep.187

We have finally made it back onto the canal after our big trip on our new electric narrowboat, from Stratford upon Avon, down the River Avon and onto the River Severn, through Worcester and making it to Stourport with the help of friends and fellow boaters. We check out the set up on our friends electric narrowboat, a very different set up than our electric boat, travel through Kidderminster and end our journey at Wolverley on this beautiful canal. Will our narrowboat make it? Plus do we finally get our sausage rolls?
Paul & Anthony together with Dexter live full time, but manage to work part-time, on a Narrowboat, cruising the UK Canals and finding out what it's really like to be Living on a boat exploring the Nature and scenery on some of the best canals and rivers in the UK onboard an Oakums Narrowboat called Morning Star. The canal by the Caldwall lock with all the red sandstone you mentioned reminds me of home here in PEI where all the land is red sandstone. It's absolutely lovely.

Do you ever worry about how low the bridges appear to be? I seem to be ducking every once in awhile, even though I know I'm not on the boat and can't possibly hit my head! I'm assuming some brilliant engineer has made proper calculations many years ago, but still, sometimes it's scary!

Hey Diana. At 5’4” if I hit my head we are all in trouble. As for Paul, where there is no sense 😂. No, there are some bridges you have to duck. The one on the Stratford canal was that low I had to Bob down too. Mostly, there is plenty of room and must just be the way it looks on the camera. The network engineering never ceases to amaze me though. Hope you have a lovely weekend ❤️

Sorry to see you guys get that thorough soaking! Lovely to see the friends and helpful people. As you approached Kidderminster, I was stunned at how similar those red sandstone outcrops looked to the ones, just to my west, along the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and the predominant red sandstone beds that are exposed in the Southwestern states, as well as Wyoming. They are all of a similar Geologic age, and formed when most of the continents were together as one. Happy cruising!

I've often noticed people referring to GPS speed as accurate, basically it's not. If you compare the satnav speed in your car with what the car says it's doing you will see the difference. The reason for the difference is the time taken for the signal to get to and from the satellite.

Interesting to see the other electric boat 👍🏼. Beautiful scenery, the red rock reminds me of the Grand Canyon, the trees have probably mostly fallen by now. We had a wind and rain storm and lost about half of them, then we actually had our first snow storm two days ago and that took most of the rest…..my excitement for the week. Happy cruising🙋🏼‍♀️🥰

What a lovely canal (the sandstone was really cool, as well as the old bridges). It was cool to see you cruising in the rain. When I worked on the Mississippi I used to love being out in the rain. My crewmates always knew they could count on me to volunteer to go out on deck when we needed to when it was storming! Don't know why I like being out in stormy weather (but my crewmates never complained about letting me have the stormy weather to myself🤣). I hope you three have a lovely week.

Anthony I have never noticed before, but are you Left Handed, I just noticed when you were operating the paddles. I have been watching you guys since the very early days, if not from the start, and have only just noticed. Doh!!!!! Glad that there were no real issues (down in the water hatch). That's funny when you said (nicely) that Anthony could not reach down far enough in the old boat. Paul you distracted me when you said it was not you that hit the wall, which made me lose concentration thinking, I never noticed the boat touch the side wall, and then I heard a gentle bump. Was that a verbal distraction (I thought). Nice to see you had more friends on board for drinks and a chat. Anthony is doing well refusing all the Sausage roll treats. Loving your chats together. Dear Anthony and Paul I was watching your latest video where you were checking your prop for sticks. Have you ever thought about putting clear plexiglass as your cover a lot of sailboats use that to see there prop and keel without having to remove covers. Just a thought from Shawn and Laurel.

Loved the vlog, back on the canals and such a beautiful area you cruised on, and that red sandstone such a lovely colour. Nice to compare another electric boat. Thanks Nicholas. Definitely a lot easier to get to the prop on this boat. We are struggling to see exactly what we have used as the info on the VRM doesn’t show the power consumption of the motor when we cruise. We are also having a major overhaul of our system at the end of the month so hopefully we should see some improvement. We aren’t getting the efficiency of Prof Pat Pending and others have said it should be cheaper than a diesel but we definitely aren’t finding this. I don’t want to go back to gas. Love electric cooking and an induction hob is pretty energy efficient. We are getting a new generator which is meant to charge the batteries in half the time of our current one. Tethys, our sister boat, has done some calculations the genny uses 2ltrs per hour. Or 0.4 liters per KWh. So to charge the batteries 20 KWh (~5 hrs travel) takes ~8 lts I know we have our double the amount of diesel in this boat than we did in our previous boat for the whole year. Fingers crossed the plans Liam has will show much greater efficiency. Hope you have a good weekend ❤️

Really interested in how your power use compares to Patent Pending now you’ve sorted the battery snags. You guys generally cruise for longer each day, and I’d love to know how hard it is to manage the power demands to minimise generator use, and how it compares to the old boat’s diesel consumption… Always impatient for the next episode, keep it up guys…

Cheers Richard. We definitely cruise further and probably faster than Prof Pat. We seem to be using more diesel than on the previous boat but we are having further work done to the boat and we will then try and look at diesel consumption as currently, although the batteries are sorted, there are other things that will be addressed that is also contributing to the diesel use. So much damage to the coastal villages. 🌊 😕 I love this canal. As much as I live the pastoral canals with sheep, cows and horses, I love the ones that are a bit "wild". I think I like those canals because in a weird way they remind me of home. West Virginia doesn't have canals but there are similar cuttings done for roads and massive amounts of trees in the rural areas. ❤ Have a great weekend! ❤

Good video. I noticed the same circumstance as I saw with you and Paul as you passed under the concrete bridge before the lock near Tesco in Kidderminster. It looked like a drug deal was going down. Do they have problems in this area? We did this 4 years ago and we picked up a Barolo wine that was fantastic at Tesco? Go figure. We would not stop in Kidderminster, however, and found a good place further on.

Greetings to you Majai. Here is the one I use. Lasagne Al Forno Evening Meal Prep Time: less than 30 mins | Cook Time: over 2 hours | Servings: Serves 8 Ingredients: For the ragu 2 tbsp olive oil 450 g beef mince 450 g pork mince 2 onions, roughly chopped 4 sticks celery, diced (optional) 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 level tbsp plain flour 150ml/¼ pint beef stock 1 tbsp redcurrant jelly (optional) or 1 tsp caster sugar 3 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp chopped thyme 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes For the white sauce 50g/2oz butter 50g/2oz plain flour 750ml/1¼ pints hot milk 2 tsp Dijon mustard 50g/2oz Parmesan, finely grated salt and freshly ground black pepper For the lasagne: 12 lasagne sheets 75g/3oz mature cheddar, grated Directions: Preheat the oven to160C/325F/Gas 3. For the ragu, heat a large frying pan until hot and add the oil. Cook the mince until browned all over. Remove from the heat and transfer to a plate. Add the onion, celery (if using) and garlic to the pan and cook until softened. Return the meat to the pan and stir in the flour. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Add the redcurrant jelly (or sugar), tomato purée and thyme, then stir well. Stir in the canned tomatoes. Bring to the boil again, cover and simmer in the oven for 1-½ hours, or until the beef is tender. For the white sauce, melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the flour and cook over the heat for one minute. Gradually whisk in the hot milk, whisking until thickened. Add the Dijon mustard and parmesan cheese and season well with salt and pepper. For the lasagne, put one third of the meat sauce in the base of a 2.3 litre/4 pint shallow ovenproof dish. Spoon one third of the white sauce on top. Arrange one layer of lasagne sheets on top. Season. Spoon half of the remaining meat sauce on top and then half of the white sauce. Put another layer of lasagne sheets on top, then the remaining meat sauce and remaining white sauce. Sprinkle over the cheddar cheese. Leave for six hours before cooking so that the pasta can start to soften. Preheat the oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Cook in the middle of the oven for about 45 minutes- or until golden brown on top, bubbling around the edges and the pasta is soft. Hope you enjoy 😊
