Thank you for the excellent video. Very comprehensive and non bias test. Can be considered to be scientific too, same ink same paper and no modification on the nib. Excellent 👍 job.

I'm a JoWo fan, thru and thru. I've tried every #5 size on my Moonman M2 and the JoWo just out performs all of them

Good review, although limited by low sample size. Ideally this should be done with several nibs of each make to account for variability, quite large in low-priced nibs. In general, the conclusion seems correct: Jowo nibs tend to be better than both counterparts. A couple notes here: 1) Scratchyness and feedback are physically different degrees of the same thing. Feedback is a small scratchiness, inevitable and tolerable when small. Interestingly, the scores of 'scratchyness' and feedback at the end turn out to be the same. 2) Wetness and flexibility tend to partially compensate for lack of smoothness and disguise it. For instance, the Bock nib was a little less smooth than Jowo, but considering it is much wetter, it means that its difference in (lack of) smoothness is larger than perceived. 3) An important feature in nibs is sensitivity to small angles of rotation. A poorly tuned nib may appear quite smooth at a very restricted angle - its 'sweet spot'. It becomes scratchy as soon as you deviate from it. This is often perceived as scratchiness or excessive feedback. Admittedly, it is hard to measure, but when that nib is correctly polished, it immediately appears smoother. And.. 4) Lastly, any nib can be made excellent and better than any otber brand if tuned and ground correctly. Given tbe high variability, this would overcome any difference in 'out of tbe box' quality grading.

Excellent comparison, thank you. I think one of my favorite nibs is a Kaweco Bock from before they switched, but overall I think Jowo are more consistent in quality. Not sure if I have any Schmidt nibs yet. Between these, what is your personal favorite, and where would you rank Kanwrite?

Thank you, very helpful and exactly what I was looking for. Out of interest, have you ever made a similar set of comparisons between these and the stock/mainstream steel nibs made in-house by Pilot and Lamy? I have my own ideas based on my 700+ (yikes!) pen collection, but it would be interesting to get your thoughts.
@drfountainpens15213 жыл бұрын
Hello.. 700!!! Wow. I can do that but the sizes do differ. So would it be fair to compare? Size 6 with 5
@bikkies3 жыл бұрын
@@drfountainpens1521 The Pilot nibs might be a reasonable comparison as they are closer to a size 5 than the Lamy. I was thinking though that it's more of a general matter. Lots of folks will own Lamy and Pilot but may be curious about how a generic 5/6 nib will compare. I have pens with Bock, Schmidt and Jowo nibs but it's never been a deciding factor for me so far, whether to buy a particular pen. If they're using one of these three then it tells me they have a probably higher concern for quality control, but perhaps I should be more selective.

Jowo nibs are relatively smooth to write with. Lamy safari in medium and broad. Pilot Prera is pretty good as well. Else try gold nibs. Pilot 74/912/91 in broad are nice. Lamy 2k too is smooth.

@nanjappa424 жыл бұрын
+Santosh Pai Getting spare nibs is difficult here in India. Kanwrite nibs used to be available on Amazon, but not for the last year. You can get "Serwex" ( brass) nibs there- these are Fine nibs, and small. (not No.6) Some very ordinary nibs are available @ penhouse.in. These too are of small size, not no.6. There are some old style pen service shops in some cities who do stock nibs.(eg. Meenakshi Stores, opp. Balaji Mandir, Avenue Road, Bangalore; Pen Center Guntur.) They do have nibs- but you have to visit and choose. I am sure there must be such places in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, also. I recently saw an announcement on the Website of Ambitious nib company that their nibs would be available soon- how soon, no one knows. These Indian companies are poor in communication- they do not care to reply to your mails. If you have friends in these cities, you may try through them. Good Luck.

@@nanjappa42 Mr. Sandeep Awasthi is one of the owners of Kanwrite Pens. He is a nice person and his mobile No. is 9305456599. I have ordered pens and nibs from him directly. He offers semi flex nibs - that are comparable to the Omniflex nib by Conklin.

@@kheharlawassociates3222 Yes sir, I fully agree with you. Initially there was some difficulty in communicating with Kanwrite. But I got Sri Awasthi's number from some correspondent online and could contact him. He sent me the whole catalogue of his products, pens and nibs. I have since obtained many nibs from him. He is a very nice person, and attends to all mails himself. That is very kind of him. I have found that Kanwrite nibs are very good-AS GOOD AS SOME GERMAN NIBS LIKE JOWO AND SCHMIDT. This is my personal experience-not opinion! I entirely agree with you.

@drfountainpens15215 жыл бұрын
Thats good question. I was thinking the same. But then left it out as I thought maybe it's not being offered across many platforms so there would be less curiosity about it. I will update you shortly or make a separate video about it.
@nanjappa424 жыл бұрын
Kanwrite nibs are good. They are reported to make nibs for Indian pen brands like Gama, ASA and some others. The nibs in Gama pens (mostly Indian Fine- which is between European Fine and Medium) are very good. The ASA gives you options of F. M or B -which are all equally good. Unfortunately, it is difficult to buy these nibs in the open market. Amazon used to sell some Kanwrite nibs on line, but they have not been available for more than a year now. ASA sells extra nibs with some models of their pens. 'Ambitious'- another Indian brand is also a good nib, but that too is difficult to get in the open market.

There's no such thing as a Schmidt nib. Some Schmidt nibs are made by JoWo, and some are made by Bock. None are made by Schmidt.
