And yes, the piece internally that can be pushed downward is the bypass function. When the weather is cold and the oil thickens up, the positive displacement oil pump can create a LOT of oil pressure. The pressure pushes on the filter and its base that it sits on at the cap end. The pressure pushes the filter element down like you can do by hand, and that lifts the filter off of the housing base which lets oil bypass directly from dirty side to clean side so that the necessary oil flow volume is maintained to protect the engine. A separate pressure relief valve bypasses any oil volume that is necessary to keep oil pressure safe overall. The filter bypass is to regulate pressure and flow by removing the filter restriction from the lube circuit, and the other pressure bypass is to limit the flow overall (even with the filter bypassed) so that pressure to the engine is kept safe. Once the oil reaches operating temperature and the engine is at cruising RPM, the filter bypass should be closed all the time so that you get 100% oil filtration. The filter bypass may open temporarily during high RPM acceleration, or if you're sustaining high RPM such as speeding on the highway or something. It should be noted that even WITH the filter bypass fully open when cold, that cold oil is still too thick overall and that other pressure bypass will open at a certain RPM and any additional volume of oil pumped by the oil pump will just be dumped out of the lube circuit back to the pan rather than going to the bearings and such. For example the pump may provide the adequate flow and pressure up to the point where it'll hit that bypass at 3,000 RPM and spinning the engine faster than that actually damages it due to lack of lubrication. That's why it's critical to drive gently until the engine and the oil are fully warmed up. Thinner cold grade oils stop hitting bypass sooner than thicker ones. If an engine calls for a 5W-30, you can and should use a 0W-30. Don't ever change the hot grade (second number) spec, only the cold.

DO NOT use that shorter filter cartridge. That is not for the 4Runner. It fits the smaller Camry and Highlander engines. Also, that longer extension is a "wobble" type that allows a little bit of play on the socket for situations where there is a slight obstruction in front of a bolt head.

you are so right. the small filter is for a camry

Good job except it is a huge mistake to not change oil every 5000 miles. Check out the car care nut videos. Is a Toyota mastertecnition.

LoL no its not. Ive been doing my oil change on my camry for 220k at 15k and filter every 7500 miles. 5k oilchanges were for the days when fiberglass and cardboard were used in filters pre-90s. The particulates that are cought by filters now aday in these thinner oils allow it to run longer.

The Car Care Nut is God when it comes to Toyota maintenance. He say 5 K, so that’s what I do.

Go to 13:56 and look at how short that filter is...it doesn't even come up to the full height of the center tube. If you installed that filter, you would have ZERO filtration. Dirty oil would enter the exterior side of the cartridge chamber and go right through into the central side of the housing which is the clean side. It would get right through those exposed holes that are uncovered due to the short filter. The element needs to be long enough to seal on both ends so that dirty oil has nowhere to go but through the media. I think you've gotten the wrong filter, or the wrong filter was swapped into that short one's box. If you install that one, you'll go thousands of miles with 0 filtration. :'(

They were bought from a Toyota dealership. I'll have to take it back and compare to a new one and see what they have to say about it

@@ExitOffroad I definitely would! Bring your VIN so the parts guys can look it up and be exactly sure which filter housing your engine has. Then they can get the correct superseded part number and be guaranteed to have the correct filter to compare to. Mistakes happen. 🤷🏻♂️ I hope they are cooperative and give you the correct filter as an exchange without hassle.

You risk buying a counterfeit filter on Amazon and Ebay. There are many KZbin videos on counterfeit Toyota oil filters. Real genuine Toyota oil filters only cost $5 at the Toyota dealership.

Thanks. These were from Amazon but sold and shipped by a nearby Toyota dealership.
