This video teaches a bigger lesson than just how to do a proper oil change. I made the rookie mistake of letting dealership do my 10k oil change because it was free.... and they did the same exact thing to my oil filter housing. Those guys are NOT mechanics. Real mechanics get paid well and dealerships aren't about to pay a real salary to a trained mechanic. I needed my biggest impact on highest setting to get it off. they will never ever EVER touch my 4runner again. for anything. Ive installed Fumoto valve as well. love it. Great video... with the proper investment in tools, oil changes can, and should, be done at home with care and pride.

Informative video! I changed my oil in my 4Runner for the first-time last month. I had the two-year Toyota maintenance. I will never take my vehicle to my Toyota dealership again. They rounded off one of the bolts on the skid plate. Took me forever to get that bolt off. They did not install the crush washer on the oil drain plug. One of the O rings on the oil filter was missing. I don't understand why dealerships are like that.

@@JasonExplainsThingsI’ve been doing my own oil changes now for going on 30 some-odd years. As neat as I try to keep it, invariably I still get splatters. I do it over a large cardboard sheet so I don’t get the splatters on the driveway or the garage floor. Unfortunately for the cardboard, it does not go away unscathed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My wife’s car was at the dealership for a warranty oil leak repair, they also changed the oil under the procedure, the next time I did an oil change I literally twisted the metal on the oil filter getting it off, needless to say there was a few choice words said while I was doing this lol, I also use a metal garage floor drip pan when I do my oil changes, it keeps any drips off the floor, great video Jason 👍😁

Nice instructional video. As a boat engine mechanic, I use a pump to suck the oil out of the crankcase through the dipstick tube. I am not sure about that oil pan valve, but that is me. I have had to remove engines because people over tightened oil filters, or don't lubricate the o-ring.

The more I watch the more I realize how often we ignorants admire other ignorants showing off their intellectual adventures. Silly how he shows off his tools only to discourage 50% of the rookies from attempting to do it. At least I was like that before. Meanwhile most of the tools are not needed. Keep it simple. This cartridge can not be put on too tight. If you installed it correctly you would know. The bottom cap screws on easily until it reaches the end. Then the filter, if you do use OEM Toyota set, lubricate the gasket with oil generously and install it on COLD engine it goes on easily by hand. When you reach the end, bottom out you are done. So much for the torque wrench. Removal is also best approached when engine is cooled COLD. Enjoy.

There are at least 4 companies that make quick 'drain valves' for vehicles. All seem to work equally well, per comments on each site. I just recd my ValvoMax drain valve and chose it because for my Rav4, it had the shortest exterior stem and so it will fit fine, with my splash shield in place..and it comes with 2ndary safety drain metal cap to assure no leakage ever once in place. Amazon also sells a collapsable clear plastic jug, called the DRAIN MATE that accepts oil thru the tube drain, holds about 5qts of oil and once filled with used oil, you just cap the jug and carry it /empty it in any nearby Car Parts store....so cant wait to do my own oil soon ..as it will be the first 'no mess' (virtually) since I have ever done vehicle oil changes 🙂

I saw a YT video where a oil expert (I believe he has some type of chemical engineering degree or something and worked for a well know race team) show why it is important to pre fill the oil filter. Both are fantastic. If I were to say which is "best" I would slightly lean towards the 4Runner. It seems a bit better made. Yes it has much more room for passengers. I love the 4L engine. Negatives... it gets worse gas mileage than a Taco, and it's wider and therefore a bit harder to park and avoid scratches while off-road. But I love both.

what if the oil filter was appropiatly installed with a torque wrench? but the mechanic didn't decontaminate the oil from the Threads, so it skewed the torque value. it happens! especially with oil plugs! but yes, if you are going to be using a torque wrench on a fastener, it must not be contaminated with anything especially lubricant. @JasonExplainsThings Was the Maintenance Supervisor willing to "allow" a discount for your next service or parts? Dealerships SUCK when it comes to regulated service. MINIMAL EFFORT, and high cost... Have you any thoughts on obtaining a "Quick Jack" system for your home garage? This is a "mobile" hydraulic lift system that would give you more access to the "undercarriage items" without worrying about jackstands... For the price of about $2k, this would make your home maintenance so much easier!

I know you said the dealership likely over torqued with an impact but hear me out, I recently did my own oil change on my 2017 Jetta, hand loosened and then hand tightened new oil filter. Didn't need a wrench. 10,000 miles later I also do my next oil change myself. I go to hand loosen the filter and I could not get it off for the life of me. I spent the next 2 hours giving it so much Hercules strength my forearms were sore for the next 5 days. Ended up stabbing the side of the filter with a screwdriver (not recommended for white floor challenges) and using that as extra leverage to turn, even that was incredibly difficult to remove. Moral of the story I wonder if certain driving conditions like extreme heat (Florida) made the filter so hard to get off. Or maybe your dealership still over torqued your rig.

Wait! Since you are using a torque wrench for preciseness, the oil filter canister isn't it suppose to be 25Nm (or just about 20 ft-lbs, NOT 22 ft-lbs) with the drain cap torqued to 12.5 Nm (NOT 10 ft-lbs).... well as for the drain plug torqued to 30 ft-lbs with a new (supposedly Toyota Blue) gasket. Lastly, I would suggest using fuel system cleaner a couple of tanks before the oil change rather than after. Thanks for the video and read my $0.00002

Oh yah 0/20 is so thick we need to get it hot before it flows freely. Then we can burn ourselves draining the oil.

I am not a fan of oil change valves. It just takes one stick to snag it and its over.

During my last free oil change on my 4Runner, the dealership cross threaded a bolt on my skid plate. I took it back to them and made them re-tap the hole and give me a new bolt. And like you, the filter housing was a bear to remove. I do my own maintenance now.

Stupid question- how can you tell how many foot-pounds of torque you're applying?
@JasonExplainsThings
@JasonExplainsThings 5 ай бұрын
Using a torque wrench. You set the desired torque spec on the wrench. As you’re tightening the torque wrench will click when you’ve tightened it that amount.

An impact is a great way to get a stuck filter off. Worked many times on many vehicles. If you can see the entire engine was moving while I was trying to get it loose… going harder could’ve broken where the filter housing screws in. Go ahead and think I’m dumb if you want. Just give it a try if you’re ever in the same scenario and thank me then. 👍

Um, you can if you want. With a slight lift I don't need to. Even with a stock 4Runner you can squeeze in there. But feel free to lift it if you want. Just make sure it's on level ground when you set your final oil level with the dipstick.
