Comparing my 7.3 and 6.7 powerstrokes and if I could only have one which would I choose

Talking about pros and cons of owning my 1999 f-250 7.3L powerstroke in comparison to my 2013 F-250 6.7L powerstroke
-Both are great trucks I prefer my 6.7 for the modernness of it but the old 7.3 is a great work horse and a great truck especially for being much cheaper than the 6.7 and still being better than the 6.7 in some ways!

What I like about the 7.3 vs 6.7 is that they are still pretty easily found with a manual transmission. What really sucks is it’s only the US that doesn’t have a manual 6.7. My wife’s uncle in Mexico has a 2022 F-250 with a 6 speed manual and no emissions from the factory. It’s awesome.

I had a 2002 7.3 for years and then bought a 2018 6.7. Owned them together for 3 years. I drive the 02 more only because I wanted to keep the miles down on the new truck. However when I needed a heavy duty pulled I took the 6.7. Great video I agree 100%

I was in the market for a truck recently, and I couldn’t find a 1/2ton truck in TX post-2014, under 100k mi, and clean title, for under $29,000, so I just bought my Dad’s 2002 7.3 @ 268,000mi. It’s sentimental to me because I grew up riding in it all the time, so I’m probably biased, but the most exciting things about the truck is the reliability, and the cost of maintenance & repairs. It may not be the most powerful, but for the average person I feel like it will handle what any average homeowner could throw at it.

Pretty spot on. One thing that’s a huge difference for me is towing. Having the exhaust brake and tow haul mode is a game changer for anything heavier. Daily driving and driving in the cold I’ll take my 6.7 any day. That being said my 7.3 is my main landscape truck and the only issue I’ve had is my tranny. If I could find a rust free dump truck I’d pick one up in a heart beat but they’re so old at this point it’s impossible in New England to find a good clean one that isn’t best to crap for 20 grand.

nice! I am getting into powerstroke stuff heavy right now. Just finished a 6.4 to 6.0 swap and now in the middle of putting a 2008 f350 crew cab body on a 2001 7.3 frame. The wiring is simple and easy to convert to standalone. Just got a 7.3 fired up on a pallet for the first time. Man getting the air out of the high pressure oil system is a pita, I cranked that sucker for 10 minutes probably 🤣

I’m in Cali that y I got my 02 7.3 f250 lol dam u hit the nail on the head yeeee preadmissions and cost of ownership and maintenance reason why I’m running it and yes, I can’t afford to 6.7 right now But I would still got 7.3 and have the engine fully built and transmission done

The 6.7 is objectively better than the 7.3 and if I could afford to own one I would. However, you hit some great points on cost of ownership and ease of maintenance. I’ll hold onto my 7.3 with a death grip for now and maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to have a 6.7 One other thing worth touching on is that 90% of the components from your white truck will bolt onto the 7.3. I’ve seen front end conversions, interior swaps, bed swaps, and everything in between. So you could technically have a 7.3 with all the comforts of a 6.7 if you wanted to put that kind of time, money and effort into it. Check out Zachary McFarland at E4 Motors, his 7.3 has a full 6.7 interior swap with sound proofing and all!

The 6.7l and the 7.3l are alot alike in reliability. The 7.3l is never going to ve taken down for reliability. But damn the 6.7l is a powerful reliable motor. I say the 11-16 trucks are damn good trucks. Price of ownership though the 7.3l is "cheap" not to mention the r4100 is a good trans not as good as the 6.7ls trans but shell get the job done, id like a 6.7l and keep my 7 3l excursion

I have a 06 6.0- rebuilt did full rebuild- tows not good have to watch it. Just bought a 2012 6.7 and it’s un matched. My 6.7 is stock and it beats the shit out of my 6.0- should have not waited this long to buy one. It’s quiet, smooth and pulls hard.

I have a 2000 7.3 and a 2016 6.7 and I’m considering selling the 6.7 while it’s still worth some money because honestly I drive the 7.3 a lot more often than the 6.7 because it’s an older truck that already leaks and has paint chips exactly like you said. As the 6.7 is so nice and luxurious I’m scared to use the truck as a truck! Lol. You made some great points man the 6.7 is such a nice truck but it’s a constant teeter totter whether it’s worth the cost of ownership or not considering how much I use it. I probably start it once a month to take it to town that’s it lol. 7.3 gets used on the ranch once a week! Decisions decisions!! Great video!

I have a later 99 7.3 4x4 6sp manual. Three biggest saling points for me is i got manual trans, leaf spring front end and its a 7.3. All that other mess is just cosmetic stuff which you can put on any truck.. Never have been an auto trans fan. Then all my fords have been coil springs, and I have just never liked that setup. I average 19mpg with mine with 33s and the ts tuner on tow mode. To many issues with the newer trucks and crazy over priced.

My dad has two 7.3s a 02 and a e99 both 6 speeds the 02 before the lift and everything he would baby the throttle and he got 21 mpg the e99 always gets 16-18 mpg but after the lift and bigger tires he gets 17 mpg but I’ve always wanted a 6.7 a 2017-2019 king ranch

I average 17.5mpg on my 7.3 ive gotten up to 18.6mpg thats filling the tank completely completely full and setting the trip set. I know people with tuners who claim 20+

@@nick7.398I'm sure you don't with those wide ass tires. I literally screenshot every calculation of every fill-up. I have basically stock size. The lowest mpg I've ever gotten was 16.3 unloaded. I just bought another 1999 f350 crew dually manual 4x4 one owner, garage kept, camper special, with no gooseneck hitch ever installed 7.3 today with 88k miles I have to rebuild from a crash but I can't wait to drive a 7.3 manual for the first time once I get it done. I'm sure it's mileage will be worse than my Supercab short bed 1999 4x4 with 192k miles. But my new one has a hydra and 4" exhaust and other goodies so time will tell

At the end of the day, it's really a matter of opinion, the 6.7.I'm sure very nice trucks.I personally would never own. I own 95 f250 73 And it does have tons of issues being that old but I wouldn't trade it in the world it has Sentimental value to me I'd rather build the one I have. I'm sure if you spend that money you spent on that brand new diesel, you can make your old ones spin circles around it and give it a run for its money.

I have identical truck and mine has a trip log with over 1200 gal used and over 500 hours the trip has rolled over so not sure the exact miles, I it's sitting at 19.8mpg. I reset the average every fill up and I average around 22 without towing or playing.

@Nick’s Powerstroke drive with your big toe, and that boost gage is a good indicator of fuel usage cause it has to maintain air to fuel ratio. Reset the mpg it'll help you develop better diving habits

Superduty 7.3 has a 4r100 automatic trans. I prefer 7.3 powerstroke over a 6.7. I have 3 diesel pick-ups. A new 2022 F550, a 2001 F550, and an obs f350. The 2001 f550 gets around just as good as the 2022. Yes the new truck is quiet. The old f550 has 340k miles plus hours running a crane. The new is at 13k miles. I don't drive the obs much. I'd sell the new truck and run the older ones if I had to sell.

If you don’t fully refurbish the vehicle, it will continue to have problems like 20yo vehicles do. if not regularly maintained throughout the history of the truck, it’s going to be issue after issue I bet $100 dollars 6.7s will have problems after 20ys. @@nick7.398 yea on a 7.3. 2000 with the stick shift to be exact. I’ve found a nice one in good shape. I have a 97 7.3 that I’ve always used and it was obviously a great work truck. But it quit on me so I’ve been thinking about getting this 2000 7.3 or if I should just wait and find a good 6.7…my main hang up is just being able to tow those heavyish loads once in a while. I want to be able to tow my tractor plus an attachment or two if necessary without overloading the 7.3.

Depends, if it’s got an 8” bed then any old 1999-2016 dually bed will fit but if it’s got a 10+ ft flat bed on it or something then you would have to shorten the frame

My 6.7 has no issues. My 7.3 had tons of issues, everything worn out, no A/C, turbski blew up, leaked power steering and oil, my 6.7 on the other hand needs no work.

@@nick7.398 at the end of the day it still be cheaper to build the truck did you want instead of going out to buy a new $67,000 truck and then be stuck with a bunch a high issue repairs like DPF and all that garbage that nobody wants or needs in most states it’s illegal to delete your DPF system and if you try to change check in they pull 20,000 off the value of it and you might get in trouble for pulling the DPF and all that shit off that was you I would sell at 67 and build that 7.3 up to what you want it to be.

@@fordmech7913 where I’m at I can delete no problem and in my case the 6.7 is way cheaper and easier than it would be to coil swap my 7.3, build my 7.3 to 500hp, and custom wire up heated king ranch seats touch screen radio etc into a ol 7.🌲, love them trucks to death but 6.7s are way better
