The 6amp Ryobi battery seems to be the "High Performance" battery like the one that came with my lawn mower. It has the taller case because it may also have circuitry that allows it to communicate with lawn mower. When cutting with my lawn mower and I hit a thick or taller patch of grass, the motor ramps up so it doesn't stall, until I make it through that patch and then it goes back down to the normal speed. This is the same principle as the 18 V high performance tools and batteries. I have a second 6 amp battery that I purchased at Home Depot for my smaller 1st gen Ryobi lawn mower. It has a shorter case like the 4 amp battery that came with the mower, but only slightly larger and is not a "High Performance" battery. I can however also use it in the newer lawn mower to finish citting my yard if I start running out power on the HP battery. I also have found that the HP battery must be charged with the charger that came with the mower or it doesn't fully charge.

The "taller case" is because it's a 3-row battery (30 cells), not because of more electronics. The "6.0 Ah" knockoff battery here is a 2-row battery. It *would* be technically possible to get 6Ah out of a 2-row battery if 3000mAh cells were used but rest assured the cells in the knockoff battery are gonna be crap. There are two versions of the real Ryobi 6.0 battery though as you indicate. One is the OP40602 which is the older version that is 3-row. The newer one is the OP40604 which is a 2-row battery. As mentioned the first comes about its capacity by using 30 x 2000mAh cells; the latter uses 20 x 3000mAh cells. The slimmer version uses VTC6s as well which are premium cells; the bigger version uses cheap Eve, TenPower, etc. China cells. This is actually opposite most other batteries which Ryobi started to use cheaper cells in later versions. That said, 30 cells still bolsters the output capability so it should still perform well. There's not really an "HP" battery for the 40V line in the same sense as for ONE+ (18V)... The "additional pins" on the ONE+ batteries are indeed a data connection. The "additional pins" that are on the top of some of the 40V batteries are NOT additional signals at all. They are merely T1 and T2, just in a different location--same circuits, or in other words a mirror of those signals. I'm not sure which tools, if any, even utilise these. At first I thought they were for the fast charger but I don't see terminals on that to match up; perhaps a future revision or simply tools I haven't seen use these. For what purpose I'm not sure since they're the same signals as in the connector, but they had to have made them like that for a reason.

The mower adjusting its speed to compensate for higher load doesn't have anything to do with the battery, it's the control computer inside the mower sensing that the motor is bogging down and "throttling up" to compensate. All of the motor control is done by the mower itself, the battery just provides power.

@@john123abc201 This is what their website says about the 18 V high performance batteries so I assume that this would also pass over to the 40 V high performance batteries. Would like to have seen the experiment repeated with a single change: switch the batteries. Put the real Ryobi where the aftermarket battery was in the first test and the after market battery where the real Ryobi was and run the test again. I think this would either add validity to the initial conclusion or completely discredit it. Would be good to know.

The genuine ryobi 6ah is now way smaller than that 6ah hp version you have. They must have changed something internally. I bought 3 9.6ah knockoffs for less than one 6ah ryobi. They are the same size and weight as my failed 6ah hp. I took one knockoff apart and it had the same configuration and number of cells, but the ics were arranged differently on the circuit board and the cells are different color. The knockoff actually mowed my entire yard while the ryobi stops with about 3 minutes of yard left, so I switch to the other battery in the mower. My knockoffs say 9.6ah but are likely around 7ah, which is totally fine. I'm storing them in a metal safe box in the garage just to be safe though 😅

Run time is good to know but equally if not more important is how many duty cycles can you get out of each? If the knockoff fails after a few dozen cycles then the higher price and 3 year warranty of the genuine Ryobi battery starts looking a lot more cost effective.

To test the capacity, you can use a Kill a watt plug to test how many WH used to charge a battery. I test a Kobalt 4.0ah 40v Amazon battery and only used 100wh from empty to full. This make it no more than a 2.5ah battery.

Wondering using a light is an accurate comparison test. Wouldn’t the the starting and stopping of large power tool create a different level and type of power drain than a light - as in, your run time is going to be a lot different if you compare actual usage in a power tool.

Correct runtimes are directly inversely proportional to power usage. But it goes to show that the genuine will last twice as long in any case.

The Ryobi 40v is actually 36V nominal so its 36V*(2ah*3rows)=216wh. The Ryobi HP probably has 30 2ah cells in it and the the knock off probably has 20 1.5ah cells in it. So the knockoff is 36V*(1.5ah*2rows)=108wh.

Before I finish the video, my guess is the knock lasts about 50% of the time. I will say, usally it's seem like the knock offers are bigger, funny this one is smaller. Feel like typically they are ramming these things full of cheap batteries so make up for it a little by adding more.

After pondering this a bit I think a better test would be two comparable 40v loads against one another. I’m guessing Ryobi makes a 40v blower? Assessing run time of two 40v blowers removes inverter efficiency (under the known wattage variances) as extraneous variables.

There are several things amiss with the secondary market batteries. First, and the biggest issue is there is no consumer agency policing the manufacturer of these batteries and they can slap whatever capacity they want on the sticker and amazon/ebay page and get away with it. If consumer protection agencies made the marketplaces liable for the fraud this problem would go away real quick. Second, lower quality lithium cells also have worse discharge efficiency due to internal resistance. This resistance causes energy to be converted into heat as it moves through the cell before it can even be used. Third, the battery is physically smaller it is using fewer lithium cells in parallel inside. If you have less cells, the rate of discharge is higher per cell, so even more energy is wasted as heat. The Ryobi battery uses quality cells inside, and it is using more cells so each cell also has higher efficiency.

The 6 amp Ryobi battery that he has is most likely the "High Performance" battery. I believe that the taller battery has the electronic circuitry inside that allows it to communicate with the lawn mower or machine it is being used with. The standard 6 amp battery is the same size as the aftermarket battery that he has. I have both standard and HP Ryobi Batteries.

I bought that battery out of desperation. It is absolutely not comparable to the 6ah Ryobi. As you can see it is only the size of the 4ah battery, and it weighs less than the 4ah as well. I use it I'm my Ryobi mower. Real-time use is about 75*/* of my Ryobi 4ah. It does not handle high discharge as well as the Ryobi 4ah battery. In a pinch this knockoff is o.k., and as $/time just about equals the Ryobi. But don't expect anywhere near the performance of a Ryobi.

The reason why the knockoff is smaller is because it doesn't have 6.0ah (36V) of USABLE capacity. It's 6.0ah NOMINAL. The genuine battery has 6.0ah usable and way more nominal. That's why the knockoff is cheaper and how it gets away with calling itself 6.0ah. There's also no telling battery cell quality, safety circuitry, or other component quality. Even if both used the same cells from the same factory, I can guarantee you TTI is getting the better quality cells.

I bought the replacement on Amazon. I used it and it ran the Ryobi string trimmer just as well as the original battery. I saw the battery and decided to get a back up. So now the problem is that the battery is locked in. I brought it to the expert at the shop around the corner and he was unable to unlock it. He said that he had never seen that before. So a couple days ago I ordered another trimmer but used without a battery and charger which is fine since I have those already. The original battery is still charging and should be fine. If not, I will be making a trip to Home Depot. Spending a dollar trying to save a dime becomes very frustrating for me and for my neighbor who attempted to help me free the battery without success.
