I have owned both the KX2 and 705. I sold my KX2 to buy my 705 (XYL requirement). Both are great rigs. For me, the 705 is better because: 1. The 705 never gets hot even when running 10 watts, while the KX2 really needs an external heatsink to stay cool. 2. The 705 battery can charge in radio mean that you won't accidentally drop/lose one of those Elecraft thumb screws in the field. 3. The 705 internal sound card with ability to connect computer and radio with either a single USB cable or by using no wires via WiFi directly is a game changer 4. Ever since I bought an Icom 7300 a while ago, I don't enjoy radios without band scopes as much as I used to....705 scope is great. That being said, I miss the cute/compactness of my old KX2. It always made me smile holding it in my hand and thinking about what this little baby could do. KX2 is an amazing rig and it is so compact and small, plus that internal tuner is one of the best around. Maybe I should sell the XYL so that I can have both rigs...hi hi.

A really great review. I have a KX3 and a 705. Liked your comment about which radio you would grab for the desert island. In agreement with you at this end. Probably because I bought the backpack with the 705... aka the easiest one to grab. The backpack being fully loaded with all the adapters, wires, plus a tp atu etc. But I would sorely miss the KX3 for the joy of turning that tuning knob and the radio just lifting those weak signals.

I am still wondering why ICOM is not able to build a compact tuner that fits into the 705. Just like the optional one in the KX2. Elecraft shows, that it´s been possible for some years. Bought the 705 though, everythings else besides the no-tuner issue is great. I suppose there will be a MKII version with tuner and 4m in 3 years or so. My hope is some kind of API where it is possible to add digital modes by software upload. The display would be wonderfoul for FT8 etc.. And CPUs are getting more powerful each year.

Great review Thomas, I have the KX2 and was excited about the 705 when it was announced until I saw the specs. I'm sure it's a great radio but too big, heavy (same as 817/18) and a battery that doesn't give full power out where all fails for me and the battery on the KX2 having to come out to charge is really no big deal. Thanks for the review, maybe I will try the 705 someday when the price comes down.

I felt very much the same way when I initially saw the size/weight specs. I purchased it for review and seriously planned to sell it immediately after. As I mentioned in the video, that never happened and I know now that I couldn't part with it. I also like doing shortwave radio listening, and the IC-705 truly doubles as a portable receiver. Its performance is stellar. It is a chunk of change, though, so not exactly in the category of "impulse purchase!" :)

Nice overview and comparison. I don't really have a dog in the fight as I'm not likely going to spend that much on one QRP rig.....at least not yet. I already have a couple QRP rigs at half the cost each so I'm trying not to be tempted to make another purchase. I think the KX2 would better fit my needs, but if I were already spending that kind of money I think I'd probably go all in on a KX3. It seems like it would be just as enjoyable to use at home as it would be in the field.

I bought the 705 because it's a full featured radio, essentially a low power 7300 in compact form. I don't operate in the field, but I also don't have the room for something like a 7300 and I wanted something that could do HF in a small form factor that also had all the bells and whistles. It's great being able to just pop the radio in front of my keyboard and mess around with it, and hey if I ever want to go in the field I got something other than an HT.
@ThomasK4SWL

And right there is the power of the IC-705. Every conceivable feature in an HF radio, it takes up almost no desk space, doesn't have to be constantly tied to a power supply, and its receiver is amazing. A solid choice, there!

I use a external 2M transverter with my KX3 and it works great. I use it for operating 2M SSB as well as having local repeaters programed on the radio. You can use this same set up on the KX2. This is something to think about if you are wanting to buy the IC-705 just because it has all mode VHF/UHF, but you already own a KX2 or KX3.

I actually had this debate with myself before I purchased my radio. I came from using an icom 7000 so the ICOM user interface would’ve been natural for me. However ultimately I went with the KX3 because it was tried and true. I think the portability of the kx2 is amazing. The features of the 705 are great as well but for me wanting to mix at home use and field use the KX3 was a great balance between the two!

I'm interested in backpacking so SOTA is the way to go for me. KX2 fits the bill, although it was heavier than advertised. Internal battery could be better, if using newest Li-Ion cells from.. forgot, samsung I think.. Will rebuild my battery, maybe will do a video on that, I'm still waiting on a new BMS and battery wraps. I was reflecting on what would make the ultimate SOTA radio - weight was my primary concern. I've adapted the uSDX design to a new form factor that would fit in a shirt pocket, waiting for pcbs and parts. fingers crossed.

Excellent objective review. I agree, for your operating style, the Elecraft is probably a better fit. I own an IC-705 & later purchased the companion AH-705 autotuner. A HUGE consideration for me is that I'm a VHF / UHF weak signal operator, primarily SSB & FT8 / FT4. If you have an iPad, you can operate the IC-705 remotely via WiFI using SDR-Control app; it makes FT8 / FT4 operation TOTALLY wireless, NO UDB cable needed! (Operating FT8 with a conventional PC via USB sometimes leads to issues with either PC noise in the IC-705 or USB "hangs" if the antenna is close nearby). I use the IC-705 (so far) as primarily a "second shack", vs. my IC-7300 / IC-9700 main staion. Using the IC-705 / AH-705 with a 30' long piece of wire strung between a couple or rooms INDOORS, a running off a 12-volt battery to get 10 watts output, I've worked as far as Japan & Australia from my home QTH in Massachusetts on FT8. Connected to my full - size 75 meter inverted V, I've had a leisurely trans - Atlantic QSO at 5 watts with a "big gun" UK station on 75 M. SSB. I've also used in on D-star, primaily using a telescoping 19" whip antenna thats loads with a perfect SWR on 2 meters, enjoyed a late - night D-Star QSO with another Japanese station (Yes, I realise it's primarily an "internet" QSO). The AH-705 tuner, while a bit pricey & almost as big as the IC-705 itself, works off a pair of alkaline "AA" batteries & is VERY fast & versatile. 73, Tom WA1LBK

Thank you for the comment, Tom! I've also become a big fan of the SDR-Control app. I plan to take my laptop to the field and do a little FT8 wirelessly some day with the IC-705. Also, I believe the 705 does a brilliant job on VHF and UHF!

Nice video, Thomas - I predict a lot of comments! I've owned two KX2's - sold the first one, regretted it and bought another. Then I bought a mcHF which I consider a "poor man's KX2". I really liked that it (like the 705) requires no external sound card to operate digi modes. I didn't know it at the time but the mcHF, due to that feature and the spectrum scope, was my gateway drug to the IC-705. No regrets at all in buying it.

Thanks, John! Yes, the IC-705 is a solid rig. I've been enjoying reading your posts about your adventures with it, too! You know, shortly after making this video, I did the Lake Norman activation where I put you in the logs for the second time. :) I may or may not eventually post the video I made of that activation--I had so many issues. I am fortunate to have both. I bought the 705 way before finding out that the KX2 even existed and I still really enjoy the 705. But after waiting my 16 weeks for delivery of my KX2 with ATU my impression was, wow this thing is a throwback radio, feels and looks unrefined. It does not appear to be very weather resistant either, with all of the holes and seams for where the rear panel hides the battery compartment. The knobs are plastic and there is no real feel to the VFO as with other precision radio VFO's. But with all this said, I absolutely love the KX2. It is very pleasant to use, it receives very well especially with headphones. The menu utilizing multiple buttons to get around is brilliant for such a small form factor, the screen in any conditions is bright and very usable. The built in ATU is great, it could tune anything. It has 10 watts in a tiny package, built in ATU and the battery lasts a long time. This wonderful little radio for its size and weight is incredible and I find myself using it more and more. I bought the paddles in hopes that one day I will be able to dit and dah.

Good stuff! When Elecraft figures out “no open” battery charging I will add the KX2 to my QRP collection! I am thinking the KX2 or TX-500 paired with the FT60R would prove a perfect SOTA kit. Awesome, honest information! I've often waffled back and forth on the KX2 vs KX3. I have an IC-703 with the backpack to go with it, but really want an updated rig. The 705 is appealing because the interface looks identical to my 7300, but I don't think I would need all of those features for portable use, but it is easy to fall into the more features trap. I think the KX3 is a better option for me since I'll be doing SSB until I get my confidence and jump into the CW deep end. Thanks for all of your insight!

I have a kx2, two of my mates have the 705. I have an external battery only. I have the internal tuner and for the size and weight, it does it for me. One of my mates does as much sota as me (more) and has resonant antennas, the other bought the elecraft tuner. 705 has 2m and some digital stuff, and the waterfall. It's a beautiful bit of gear. Both radios will do what you want. Internal tuner sold me though. So compact. So, my sota radio gear weighs 2.9kg. Mate with a 705, 3kg. Thomas, good video. You used the right word when comparing the two, "subjective". Subjectively speaking, the KX2 meets my needs as a POTA activator. I have been using my KX2 mostly on CW. Because I use resonant and non-resonant antennas, the built in auto tuner eliminates the need for an auxiliary component. What makes my experience interesting is that I purchased my KX2 used. I had no dog in the hunt so-to-speak in the KX2/705 debate. I purchased it because the price was too good to pass up. Now, if I had use for the features on the IC-705 I may be singing a different tune. Your video does a good job of providing information that will help a Ham make his own decision. Thank you! de K4NYM

Love the IC-705. Great radio. Performs superbly on SOTA. Probably don’t need the bandscope on 2m SOTA work as I always get a pile-up but it’s great in the early stages of an activation to have a look for S-2-S stations. So many other functions that make it great for outdoors - Audio recorder, GPS for position on the PC, MGR and syncing the clock (for FT8), soundcard (for FT8, APRS, SSTV). It is truly a great radio for portable use. I’m not too bothered about the lack of tuner as I use resonant antennas anyhow.

I bought a KX2 after that big snowstorm here in Texas when I realized I needed a good battery powered HF radio. For me the small size, no need for an external tuner, and low power use were the deciding factors of the IC-705. However, after using it for a while, I'd say that while it's great for short trips to city parks or operating out in the parking lot of the apartment complex where I live, I wouldn't want to take it out in the field for a camping trip lasting multiple days or even weeks. Those little screws that hold the back on and act as the attachment point for radials when using the AX1 antenna are _not captive_ , which means they're likely to get lost. In the short time I've had mine, I've already spent ten minutes sifting through the dirt under a picnic table to recover one of the screws. With that in mind, I've backordered a TX-500 in the hope that it will be better for extended field use.

Yeah, it happened several times to me that an antenna otherwise quite tuned, was out-of-tune somewhere and I was glad I had a tuner to fix that. I have IC705 wit mAT-705, wired together inside a camera bag. It's great, but sometimes too big (and indeed bigger than a KX2). So sometimes, I take a CW-only small rig (SW-3B), but again, to address the risk of mismatched antenna, I take Elecraft T1 tuner with me. It'd be great to have a radio with such a tuner integrated in.

Somehow I came away from this video feeling like you just told me that the IC-705 is a better radio, but I want the KX-2 anyway... I think use case has to be a big factor. I already have a G90 and an FT-891 for vehicle portable stuff, and am not unhappy with them. But as the kids are starting to get more mobile, I'm hoping to do more SOTA. The KX-2 dimensions are just too compelling. Also, the aesthetic is just pleasing in a way the Icom is not.
