BNC is a horrible choice for a connector. I lost a few HTs in the 1990s because of the down pressing that darn connector. It would break the top of the HT case. Have hated them since. They should be outlawed.

That would be a dream radio if it had a tuner. I so love the user interface on my IC7100 and that would be like a portable version (and with 2m/70cm). But on HF you really need a tuner so often, especially when on the move with wire antennas.

Check out Elecraft T1 auto tuner for this radio. Nice bit of tiny add-on kit. Very small & lite. Ham reviews seem overall to like it. I ordered a T1 yesterday ahead of the 705 being put out "in the wild" for us common folks to buy in the states. btw- IMHO The only downfall with this IC-705 was not including an internal tuner. If a T1 can be built & made as small as it is,, there really isn't any valid reason Icom couldn't have done something similar internally with a very small increase in radio case size.. Otherwise it seems like a perfect SOTA/POTA/portable radio. And yes a tuner is needed of some sort for us that love to build HF multi-band antennas of all types for portable work. 73 de N6DSW

What a great job reviewing the IC705. Well Done ! Question: The screw on the bottom of the radio.....is it the same size as used on a camera tripod? I can see by the size of the battery that turning off the Blue Tooth, WiFi and GPS is one thing one better do if they plan on working off the internal battery and making more than one Q. For your QRP folks out there I see they have just released the icom 705 for about $1300 dollars. But for about $450 dollars you can get a small light weight QRP size Xiegu g90 transciever with internal antenna tuner that is so good it could probably tune up a head of lettuce, antenna analyzer, waterfall, and up to 20 watts. But if you save up all your hard earned money, for an extra $850 more dollars you can get an icom 705 with no antenna tuner.

What did he mean at 0:57 ? I thought a diplexer allowed one antenna to connect to multiple radio frequency receiver inputs (eg separate VHF & UHF). In this video he is suggesting they can connect one transceiver to multiple antennas.
@hoggif4 жыл бұрын
Typical HF antenna is not resonant for VHF/UHF. You usually need at least two antennas (HF and someghing like 2m/70cm dual bander). You use a kind of splitter that connects two frequency antennas. One cable in, two cables out. All HF goes to one cable and VHF/UHF to the other. Similarly received frequencies come from two antennas and combine to one lead to radio. That allows you to work without an antenna switch that you use to select antenna manually.

No excuse in this day in age to NOT have a USB-C port STANDARD. With it's higher charging rate it would offer, AND it would be able to pass though 15 volts via the USB-C cable for the 10 Watt Output from any portable power bank with a USB-C Connector. Also lots of portable solar panels now have USB-C outputs on them. They REALLY missed the boat on that one. Ditto on the Antenna Tuner NOT being integrated into the design. This radio with all of it's accessories will be +/-$2k, which is absurd. For that $130.00 'high capacity' battery I could build a LiFePo battery pack with 500 Watt Hours of capacity. The old guard is still playing their game of charging ridiculously high prices for their accessories IMHO. I really like what this radio has to offer, but their accessory prices are going to make me steer clear of purchasing one new. Maybe I can score one used in a year or two at a heavy discount.

Wondering how rugged that touch screen is to mud, dirty and water? is there some sort of screen protector for that type of touch screen? how good is it viewable in direct sunlight in 90F + temps with humidity 80% or higher? Will it crack in with 31f and below weather? I have a few more questions but i like the radio as a mobile qrp rig. I m a qrp guy so i dont care about higher power radios.

I understand things are fluid right now, but I find it somewhat ironic is that as of July 23 2020 Gigaparts(USA) has the IC-705 a 10W QRP HF rig at suggested (pre-release) MSRP of $1,500, Yet a few web pages later Gigaparts lists a IC-7300 a full 100W HF radio for under $1,000? From a non marketing user standpoint, isn't that a bit "Bass-Ackwards"? Somewhat apples & oranges between the two but close enough for this argument. Granted the 705 has a few extras like the GPS, D-Star VHF features, but 50% more?
@XYZY644 жыл бұрын

@Spookieham4 жыл бұрын
Probably because it's not a world wide standard and would increase the price
@KevinDurette4 жыл бұрын
The IC-705 uses direct sampling up to 25 MHz and down conversion IF sampling above that. They didn't mention in the literature whether that's accomplished with only one multiplier circuit, but I'd imagine it'd be hard to support both 10m and 70cm on the same chips. The 4m band probably falls between the ranges they designed for this, and building a separate solution would be cost prohibitive for the small market where 4m transmission is allowed. 73 de K7COI
@stephentompsett4 жыл бұрын
@@KevinDurette When the IC-705 was originally announced, Icom announced the 4m band as functionality to be available in the European version. An Icom representative was talking about the functionality being available in Europe about a week before it was announced that 4m would not be available, and the literature on the Icom website was updated to remove mention of 4m, so there appears to have been a last minute technical/legal issue resulting in the removal of the functionality. I'm familiar with the published block diagrams, modern synthesiser chips are available that can produce continuous coverage from a few MHz to GHz, and Icom had obviously selected and used devices that met the functionality requirements of the originally published and announced specifications. I believe that 4m was available in at least one pre-production version of the radio seen in the UK. I'm interested in the reason for the removal of the feature...
