if you still havent found out (or just for people here, i had to check it too), an "automa" is essentially another term for a boardgame AI, simulating an enemy. I guess so u can play for 2 players "solo".

Yep, automa is a term that was sorta "coined" by Stonemeier games when they made the first solo opponent that was called the "Automa" for their game Viticulture. They chose the word automa because it's Italian for automaton and since their game was set in Italy they wanted to go with the Italian word.

I am considering backing this, but I don't know if I should go for acrylic tokens or no. Do you use the acrylic or the cardboard? Recommendation?

I would definitely go for the acrylic tokens as well as the hexes. I only grabbed the acrylic hexes last time and kicked myself afterwards when I saw my buddy from Pecktec Games' copy that had the rest of the tokens in acrylic as well. I jumped back on the latest KS just to order those. They're totally not necessary, just as the hexes aren't, but they're so nice that I would definitely recommend them. I still think the miniatures though are a little overkill for me so I'm not planning for those. The main box is already freakin' huge, lol!

I'm not really a playmat guy unless it fits in the box like it does in Flamecraft for example.. In general, I hate storing game components outside of the main box. I'm already short on room and for me personally they really don't add to my enjoyment anymore than any generic neoprene surface on the play area does. Pecktec picked it up too but I'd prefer to just play without it on a neoprene covered table. If I remember right there may have been issues with either dark colors or blurring too which is common with playmats. I might be wrong about that though.. 🤔

Does the acrylic set come with castle tiles (or does that exist in a separate set) for those who don't prefer the 3D castles in gameplay?

Yes they come with the acrylic set. The special edition comes with cardboard castle tiles as well. The minis are just something you switch out on your board when you place them into your duchy so they are always optional but they come standard with the Special Edition so you'd have to buy an older set if you didn't want them at all.

Thank you for this great comparison video. I saw it after I'd backed the reprint. I think my aging eyes will definitely cope better with the larger tiles and less busy board! I'm also glad I went for the acrylic tiles as I'm also hoping it will reduce wear and tear on the components.

@ninjac8866 I think it's well worth getting all of the acrylic bits! The game is huge so be ready for that 😅 I ended up giving the small box to my LFGS's public collection though because even considering size, I know I'll never not want to play the big one, haha. Hmm I don't think so.. I actually gave away my older copy so I can't check for certain.. Are you just asking for travel purposes?

@@organiccardboard yes, I would just put everything cardboard from special edition into this box + few duchy boards (not dual layered, just a tile board with plastic insert) so that I have this for traveling

I think it'd still be hard to expect it to fit but maybe? I wonder if anyone has any good travel option ideas in the bgg forums. I don't think the tiles would fit so you might be able to just throw all of those tile bags into another bag.

Campaign is in Q2 of this year, but I dont see any info about shipping date

I hope it works! Worse case scenario you could probably get a smaller tote box and just put the essentials in there to take places. The vineyard expansion is going to add to that space a lot though but it's my favorite expansion so worth getting there wherever you're going. I don't know about shipping though.. I actually wasn't aware of the reprint since I got in on the first one.

This is the Kickstarted version but honestly I'm not sure what would be different between the Kickstarter and the retail version of the Special Edition.

Even the old version is not the old 2011 version, they are all newer versions!

Yes you are correct! I think I mentioned that somewhere but it was easier to just say new and old rather than Special Edition and 20th Anniversary Edition, haha.

I think the oldest version has less off an ADHD colour-scheme. The big Special edition has nicer art though. The Anniversary edition has many nice player mats etc though, like many extra expansions to the base game. I will not change my orginal edition for Anniversay but whould never buy the old (the Anniversary has many expansion included). For me as the game is so good extra replayability is king.
