This video is super useful! I am going to refer to this video when I get those questions too. Thank you for making this video.

thanks for all the explanations and examples :) as someone who usually uses oils, this chart really showed the range of all the mediums, super helpful!

Your explantation of the name acrylic gouache was very helpful. I was worried after purchasing my gouache I had maybe invested in the wrong type. I already have acrylics paints and water colors but but wanted to try goache for sketching color on the go. I was not interested in trying a not rewettable gouache...but I had wondered why they were produced and found your video. It makes a little more sense with the idea of being matte/sheen - the difference in chemicals. I ended up with a very basic set from Winsor and Newtson since I'm not even sure I will like working with gouache in the first place. Now I just have to find the right travel journal paper and go on an adventure with my supplies!

Thank you!! :) A thing that I really like about gouache is that they will work on cheaper (cellulose) paper better than watercolors would. I mostly use cotton paper for watercolor now, but I still keep my cellulose paper sketchbook to use with gouache. Also, if you're using gouache in a sketchbook, check out Dorlands Wax Medium to "varnish" the pieces. They keep a bit better and there's less chance of the paint rubbing off on the opposite sheet.

Very helpful and simple explanation of some of the differences and distinctions between these .. so many choices out there !!!! We are in sensory overload land :-))) thanks again

Sensory overload indeed! And so many colors! No wonder we all end up with varying sizes of hoards ;) Thank you!

This was an incredibly helpful video! I was looking into buying gouache sets yesterday and I saw that there was acrylic gouache as well. I wasn't sure what the difference was so this video came at a great time.

Great video! I am glad to see all the basic differences in one video, as a graphite artist who is just starting to branch out between different mediums, I sometimes get confused between all the videos. I would love in your followup video if you mentioned which paperweight you recommend for each of these, as well as if you need anything extra (like mixing mediums).

Fascinating isn’t it? I have experience with all these and love them equally. 😍 PS my fave medium to use with acrylics is airbrush medium. Nice flow and it’s transparent.

Can you mix gouache and acrylic?
@TsukabuNosoratori26 жыл бұрын
All I have is watercolors and gouache but I love them both for different things. I can't use acrylic paint because of allergies. I use my gouache more like Acrylics though. I love the layering properties of gouache. I love being able to blend and smooth out uneven bits like with watercolors but it still looks more like acrylics when one uses them more opaquely. Great for someone like me who can't use Acrylic paint. Nice video discussing the differences between the different mediums.

how long does the acrylic gouage stay wet and blendable?
@EveBolt5 жыл бұрын
Not very long! It's similar to acrylic's wet time and blendability.

Thank you, that was very informative! What I really need to know is, I have run out of Acrylic White paint and cannot replace due to the current lockdown! But I have a tube of white Gouache paint! Can this be painted onto my almost completed Acrylic painting and most importantly, can I paint a layer of Acrylic varnish over the completed painting!???
@EveBolt4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I'm not sure about the gouache, if anything, I would worry the varnish would reactivate the white gouache and make a mess. If you can, maybe try the technique on a spare piece of paper? Paint whatever acrylics, use the gouache on top, and then try the varnish!

I initially think that artist grade acrylics meant for paper/canvas would also be more opaque, as to be a replacement for plastic model acrylics, but it seems that neither are perfectly and consistently opaque from one color to another. this slight transparency-opacity differences kind of blow my mind because it's good to know that when you're painting models, as one probably need more or less layers to cover or give enough colors, but in my experience, the first color applied can dictate greatly how the last layer will look; the wrong base color could ruin the desired final color, like, you wouldn't want to paint bright yellow above common primer gray or darker primer colors; instead choose lighter primer color(neutral or even similar color to final layer if available), or overlay the base primer with white, then the bright color doesn't even need very thick and/or opaque layers. it also seems that automotive painting also follow this sort of underpainting rule, some may even intentionally break it to make interesting murky colors.

so does it mean that gouache paint is more economic friendly than watercolor paint?😂
@EveBolt5 жыл бұрын
Not sure! 🤣 I have a friend who did paintings with gouache and watercolor ink (no actual watercolors!) and it would really look like watercolors. I think the main disadvantage of gouache is that it usually dries less well than watercolor (in a palette).
