I use Stonehenge paper when I know I’m going to do a commissioned piece, gift, or a piece that has meaning for me. All other “cheaper” paper I use for random drawing or practice. But Stonehenge for me is the best paper for colored pencil.

So interesting to see how much difference the paper can make. Now I need to draw a lollipop. The biggest challenge will be to draw it before some sweet-toothed grandchild eats it. I go check out those bird classes, too.

Dang, the post was all purple and yellow? That's impressive. Thanks for confirming my choice of Stonehenge white paper. I've got one piece of Pastelmat that I purchased open stock, but haven't advanced enough to feel good about using it. Someday...say, have you tried charcoal paper for colored pencils? As a two-week personal challenge, I bought a set of 12 cheap Staedtler pencils and used them exclusively across a variety of exercises. I had great results with the cheaper pencils on Strathmore charcoal paper, which isn't too expensive if I recall. Might make a good option for folks on a budget. Thanks so much for your high quality content.

Sandy, can I ask a personal-ish question? Did you go to art school, or are you self-taught? How did you move from "amateur" to selling your art? I've seen you use many mediums; what medium is your favorite to work with? 💛😊

Hi Melissa! I do have a college degree in art; trained as an illustrator and graphic designer. I quit the 9 to 5 design world almost 11 years ago, and went from being steeped in crafting to figure out that wasn't challenging enough to keep me interested, so started going beyond. Watercolor might be my favorite, unless it's pencil that week. Or pastel.... or....well yeah. I like trying new things all the time so I bounce around! :)

This is a great video. I have not used colored pencils on pastelmat but sure do love it for pastels. Now I want to give it a try. I noticed you were mainly using Faber Castell Polychromos, do you feel Prismacolor Premier would work on Pastelmat? Thanks for all your wonderful videos.

I had used a bunch of my Prismacolors for some of the other bird drawings and was pretty much out of black… So rather than another trip to the store I just switched to Polychromos 🤣

What brand of pencil crayons did you use?

Looks like she’s using Faber Castell polychromos set. And I saw that she was using white Caren D’Ache pencil. Most artists and myself ofc, use a mix of pencils. I use mostly my polychromes & Caren D’Ache. They are expensive. But less pricey pencils are Derwent & Prismacolor.
