Just got me a 70 in single edge/bronze after a couple months with a mega cheapie tester otf. I like the size and it’s fine for what I usually need a knife for. Might I get a larger one later? Perhaps.. but I’ve owned many small knives, spyderco dragonflies, sak minis, ect and never felt like I needed more. I’ve also owned larger and never felt much of an advantage. Although larger does feel a little nicer.

Great video! I own a lightning as well as the benchmade 530. I am currently looking at the UTX 85 and the Ultratech. I did look at the UTX 70 but was suspecting it is too small which you did confirm w a nice comparison with the carpenters pencil! My buddy owns an Ultratech so I was lucky enough to be able to handle one in person and I think I am leaning towards that but the UTX 85 is probably big enough also in my opinion maybe just depends which one I get a good deal on. For microtech OTF series knives, do I have to use anti rust oil every time if the knife gets dirty or if water gets into the handle after washing the knife after cutting fruit? Thank you.
@chuckthesham51955 жыл бұрын
I have both a Lightning OTF and a Microtech Ultratech blue OTF. I liked the Lightning well enough until it broke. Something gave on one of the springs and the blade just hangs loose, falls out with gravity, falls back in with gravity. I have seen reviews of the Lightning that were very positive, with one guy saying that he used it as his primary EDC for two or three years and it still works. I might have just been unlucky enough to get a defective knife. I had it for about six months and it wasn't subjected to hard use at all, not even when it broke. Sooo, I guess I got what I paid for. I'm sure that Microtech would not let a defective knife leave their facility to be sold. I love the Ultra. I really did enjoy the Lightning while it lasted. I already took it apart to see what went wrong, so far no luck. I figure I can't make it any worse, so I might as well try to learn something about the innards of an OTF.

The lightning OTF is the best day to day knife you can use on a daily. I can't see myself using a Microtech knife 2 open up boxes, cutting through wire ties, cutting through plastic shipping straps, prying off huge Staples that hold together cardboard boxes, cutting up cardboard boxes to break them down and put in a compactor. The Microtech is primarily pocket jewelry. It's something you can brag about to your friends, but trust me they would be just as impressed if you showed them the lightning OTF, Cuz it's the knife that will get the job done I own three of them and my oldest one is 3 years old and works just as good as the others. Just buy yourself 11 lightning OTF's and hand them out for Christmas if you want to spend $225 and you'll be a better man for it trust me.

Tin Tin71 I have numerous lightnings and microtechs and I use the Utx-85 all day to cut down boxes and do most everything you said you use your lightning for. I understand what your saying and I get it, but because most people dont use their expensive knives to EDC doesnt mean thats not what it was meant for. Microtechs by far will out perform a lightning in longevity as well as blade retention and toughness. People just have to bring themselves to actually use their shit LOL

@mendivil714 жыл бұрын
@@donaldcooper4330 I'm not saying they can't take it Donald, I'm just saying that's a lot of money to use to beat up on a knife. I can see it more as a survivalist tool other than a day-to-day knife because as a survivalist when you're out 45 days at a time living out in the wilderness you need something that you can depend on I'm sure the lightning can do it but then again microtex steel is a lot stronger I'm thinking it can probably take more punishment.

I had the same issue buying my first one. I went with the 85 but got the regular utx shortly after. Honestly I prefer the bigger knife but they're both great. Now I want the Combat Troodon but there is no way in hell I'm paying as much for a knife as a glock! I'm looking at Cobratec Vs1 instead, 124 bucks and they look identical.
@Microfiber_Muncher3 жыл бұрын
I would be wary with the cobratecs they are mostly overpriced clones you can find on other sites for half the price, plus the quality of a cobratec is not very good.
@CastilloinaSpeedo3 жыл бұрын
@@Microfiber_Muncher I'll give you a one year later update. I bought the cobratech. The utx 85 broke a lock and the spring. The factory fixed everything but I sold it shortly after I got it back. From owning the cobratech I realized that the Combat Troodon size was too large for me. I bought another couple Ultratechs which seem to be my favorite Microtech design. Without getting into source of manufacture debates and the ethics of buying clones, I have to say the cobratech is a good value for the money. Mine never needs to be oiled, has never failed to fire, fires as easy as the Ultratech (I hear the C. Troodon's trigger can be more difficult to actuate), and the trigger button doesn't rattle around like the Microtechs do. I'd probably have been happier spending 80-100 on the cobratech from a secondary vender at a gun show or someplace like that but 125 still ain't bad for a piece that basically acted as a demo knife. I'm glad I didn't spend nearly $500 to find out I didn't like the Combat Troodon.

Good video but I have one question. How long have you had the MicroTech? It seems like you have had the Lightning for a long time and it has been used WAY more than the MicroTech. If that's the case, the comparison is flawed. Most any knife that is new and out of the box will have tighter lockup and overall be much sturdier than one that's been well loved. At least that's my experience. Nice video, though.
@ugoleftillgorite5 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point. I would agree with you on many knife designs, but some naturally compensate for wear-in. The Benchmade Axis lock comes to mind. I have had the Microtech for months now and I cannot detect any change in the lockup. If that changes I will annotate the video.

Except for coming out the front, how can you possibly say “the lightning is clearly a knockoff of the Microtech”? Half inch blade length difference, wider body, different gimping, different body shape, one top is sloped and the other isn’t, one pocket clip is off center and the other isn’t, etc etc. one is a cheap Otf and one is a top tier Otf, but they certainly weren’t trying to make a copy/clone. what a wild thing to assert.
@backwoodsfreak5 жыл бұрын
Ive carried the lightning otf for about 10 years now and im on my second one. First one consequently my wife knocked into garbage and got burned in the burning barrel. When i finally found it, the body was melted and warped. However the blade and all the hardware inside was immaculate after cleaning it up i swapped out all burnt hardware in my new knife including blade and pocket clip and she still lives on today. Honestly think it holds better edge now than before. Carbon? Id rather have a case of these than spend the same money on a microtech. Just make sure when you buy a lightning you are getting the taiwan made lightning microtech knockoff as it is superior to the slimmer (more authentic in look but dont be fooled, the springs/hardware are trash) china version by a mile.
