The type of embossing powder recommended for foiling, is a specialty formula called, bonding powder. Using regular, plastic based embossing powder, is basically re-melting plastic under the foil, which is the reason for loss of detail. At a lower heat/pressure setting, it would understandably provide better detail, but best results would be with the bonding powder. WOW! offers a great formula for this. Hope this helps.

Thank you!! I had no idea, and I'd swear when I saw Simon Hurley do this, he was using regular clear embossing powder, not a special bonding powder. But regardless, I appreciate the info and will look into getting some -- thanks very much!

Has anyone ever tried the Minc on laser printed waterslides? What temp setting did you use and what Waterslide brand do you use. Any tips?? I would love to do foil waterslides for tumblers. Maybe even printable vinyl..

Fantastic question!!! It never even occurred to me, mostly because I rarely have any success with laser printed waterslides, so I tend not to use that kind of waterslide paper. But you’re right - it would be very cool if it worked. I have melted waterslides before, just trying to dry a cup more quickly with a heat gun after applying the waterslide, but if the minc is set on the lowest heat setting, that might not cause any problems.

The Beatles art piece is gorgeous. How do you make it?

Thank you!! The base art is just a silhouette of the Beatles with their logo I found online, then I made it “groovy” with a transfer foil called “groovy psychedelic” (I think). when using embossing powder try putting a piece of 80lb cardstock between your foil and parchment paper, it probably re-heated the embossing powder and thats why you lost your detail

I love my Minc…don’t have to buy dies to use. You don’t need the Minc brand foil, just need toner-reactive foil. They also have a Minc mini that is cheaper and good enough for if your making cards. I wouldn’t change mine for anything. I just print something out on my laser jet printer and foil it. No dies needed. So in the long run you save because the dies aren’t cheap that you use in the other foiling machines.

I’ve never bought a die to use for foiling. I use my laser printer and my laminator. The trick for either is to make sure there is no dust on paper or foil! I would like to see how big a difference the foiling machines like the glimmer foil is compared to the laminator.

I print with my laser printer and foil with my laminator all the time! It works as well as a minc I payed $20 for the laminator on Amazon!

Maybe if the sheet with the minc was used from the kit when using their foil? What about using removable printable vinyl, I’m a cup girl so you know where I’m heading. So many more questions

Yes, the special transfer folder - I didn't even think of that while I was recording!! It's definitely worth a shot. Thank you for suggesting that! 😊 You can definitely put printable vinyl through the Minc, so you should have no problem using the black laser toner method to foil on printable vinyl then wrap the whole thing on a tumbler, if that's what you were thinking. I'm opening to trying about anything (especially since I have the machine now) - LOL! Thank you 😁😁

I know this is the paper channel but could you roll the leftover negative space Beatles foil on a tumbler…. I don’t know how you would go about it.

I would think so. You can foil pretty much any paper product that will go through a laminator, so a letter or an envelope (or both) should work fine. Good luck!

To remove the foil from your transfer folder just use acetone. Not finger nail polish remover as that has perfume in it. The acetone will clean up the foil.

Not gonna lie, i get better results just printing a blank page and putting my print and foil through the rollers half the time 😅 odd occasion where the foil may curl or crumple a bit but its rare haha. Ill get a laminator though i think, might work a little smoother

I don’t doubt it - most of the time I think it’s not so much the machinery or the tools as it is just repeated testing to find out what works best in each person’s situation. Come back and let us know how it goes with a laminator.

@LuxindasOtherObsessions I shall do, I had two foils and one looks scratchy and the other works perfectly but leaves a glitter effect on the paper which is fine for me, but I'll try in the morning and get back on that 😅 most cases, it's the foil used, not the machines. All foils react differently and everyone seems to run to minc or deco foil which isn't needed imo

I've never been overly impressed by the minc myself. Its really just an overpriced laminator. For a solid gold or any other color stamped design colored embossing powders alone work just fine anyways. 🤷‍♀️ I can see the slight difference in the Beatles one but certainly not enough to spend the extra money. When your new press arrives you can try it with that too 😅
