Everyone wants to know what is the difference between Ranger's Distress Crayons and Faber-Castell Gelatos? Well, I show you here in SIX MINUTES and 10 examples of how they are the same...and different! I am not endorsing one over the other, but you should know that there are some differences in colors, pigment content, and packaging that might influence your purchasing decision.

The main difference with the crayons is that they won't drip and move if you spray them with water. They will set and you can paint over them in layers. With gelato dig you add a second set layer, the colors will blend together. Theyre actually pretty different, I love both

I think it's worthwhile noting that a few of the things you were trying with the distress crayons, they were specifically designed *not* to do. Personally I have tried both and find that each have their strengths and weaknesses. Just though I would add this as many of the comments seem to be people not liking the Distress crayons, which is a bit unfair, as they are both good.

I love the Gelatos and have not tied the Distress Crayons yet but I love all the other Distress products and had wanted to try them some time! Not in no big hurry though! I had not planned on buying them since they were so expensive right now! Really like your video! I do know you have to use the Indian ink on them or some archival ink so the ink wont smear. Distress products are very different products from other products. Not many will like these crayons b/c of how he had them made... Tim did not want them to react like the other Distress products but to play well with them! He explains it in his videos about the Distress Crayons so they are nothing like a Gelato. Have a blessed day :)

I had completely forgotten that I already had Gelatos when I ordered the Distress Crayons, so now I have both. But I was excited to see that there was a video discussing the differences, and delighted to find your channel. Thank you so much.

I don't know if you like to work with gelatos much more than with the distress crayons but it seems not to be neutral. It seem to be that the distress crayons have less quality (less pigment) but they are DISTRESS crayons, they are not ment to be as bright as the gelatos. Also the stamped impression ist muss better than with the gelatos. Less colourfull, but a clear impression, while the gelato one is muddy. Also it depends on the surface on which you use the medium. Bristol Smooth cardstock oder gessoed ones give much smoother results. I love both of the crayons in their own way they are ment to be. I love reviews and subscribed to your channel but would like it if you also think and communicate what the producer want the product to be/look like/ work with. Greetings from germany

When coloring directly on the stamp and then spritzed, I had better luck with the distress crayon than the gelato. I also found that both products color better directly to a red rubber stamp vs. a clear, photopolymer stamp.

Great comparison, TFS! I really liked how the gesso stamps came out and interesting about the Memento ink over the gelatos - I don't think I'd ever tried stamping on them before and it's good to know which ink to use. xxAmy

Great review! More pigment can mean a drier, less creamy feel since most pigments are powders. More powder, less medium, less 'creamy' feel.

Great comparison! I was thinking that the Gelatos would win as far as what I'm looking for in a water soluble crayon (blendability, good pigment load), and I own quite a few Gelatos, too, so I was happy about that! I had debated whether or not I wanted to try the distress crayons, but I think I'll just use my money to buy more colors of Gelatos instead! Thanks so much for saving me some money! 👍🏼

Thank you for this test. The information lets me know I want both for different reasons. I'm prioritizing my accumulation of gelatos vs Distress Crayons for the techniques but still want the Distress colours. By the time I collect them all, though, I'm sure there will be another 'I must have this' product to add to my stash, too *laugh*

Thank you for this video, it helped me decide to pass on the distress crayons. I think the distress crayons are too expensive, $18 for 6 at Michael's vs 12 gelatos with more product and pigment for $24, before the coupon. On Amazon you can get gelatos for around $18 and a pack of 12 Faber gel sticks for $11. I thought about the distress crayons as the colors are unique but I enjoy watercolor media and so I found U.S. ART SUPPLY super crayons 36 colors for $15 and NOYO watercolor crayons 36 for $16. Now these last 2 crayon sets, which are creamy in application like the recollections or Marabu Crayons, probably aren't artist quality in light fastness but for hobbyist like me who enjoy bible journaling, card making, or scrapbooking these last 2 options will give you the color range that distress crayons have. So those sets and my gelatos with other brands like recollections or OOLY'S sparkle crayons-(12 shimmer crayons for $12.80 on Amazon and different then recollections color wise) are an expansive color range for a fraction of Tim Holtz crayons. Maybe if I exhaust trying other medium such as water soluble oil pastels from Prima or Mungyo, or have a set of neo crayons then I'll try these but there's so many other options I'd rather try first.

+Susan Chandler I tried them out today and LOVE them! I have no other product to compare them to. They are NOT like my Lyra watercolor crayons. People say they are like lipstick. They are firmer than that in my opinion. I think if you want to totally blend them by pushing them around with your finger that other products may work better. I used a circle template. I did that and didn't love it. I lightly wet a paint brush and really liked it. I will also tell you I was using the white back of a piece of scrap DCWV scrapbook paper. It was NOT watercolor paper and just about everyone reccomends watercolor paper. That will be tomorrow. I used them on Georgia Pacific card stock that I had used a Christmas Tree embossing folder on and LOVED it! That was the major reason I wanted them. LOVE LOVE LOVE the shimmer and the way it makes coloring just the raised design easy!!!! I have a minor case of cerebral palsy. Its nearly impossible for me to color the raised parts with markers or paint. These were WONDERFUL! They were 40% off today. I don't remember how much they were. My entire order came to $11.80 so on sale or with a 40% off coupon they can't be more than $10.

Latecomer here. I have gelatos. I find that, because I live in a dry area, and I need to to wet my fingers a bit before I blended colors. Do distress crayons have the same problem in a dryer climate?

On Amazon you can get 18 double scoop, I think they are supposed to have twice as much product, for $52 and change on Prime. The Distress 18 pack was just shy of $44. I have neither. Today I bought the Recollections crayons. I have thought of buying gelatos for about a year and a half. This week I saw the Recollections in videos and had to have them! I LOVE the shimmer!
