Review of Distress Crayons // Compare & Demo
Are Tim Holtz distress crayons really that different from the other water-soluble crayons and pastels we already have? We will take a look and compare the TH Distress Crayons ($13 for 6) with:
Faber Castell Gelatos/Gel Sticks (Gelatos 4/$10, Gel sticks 12/$10)
Target Watercolor Gel Crayons ($3.49 for 8)
Michaels Recollections Color Splash watercolor crayons ($24 for 12)
Sparkle gel crayons (kids section of art store or book store $10 for 12)
Portfolio Watersoluble oil pastels ($10 for 24)
Prima watersoluble oil pastels ($20 for 24)
Lyra Watercolor crayons ($19 for 12)
Caran D'ache Watercolor Crayons ($2.25 each)
Honestly, I did not think the Tim Holtz Distress crayons would be ay different that Gelatos. Granted you can do many of the same effects with all of the media here the Distress crayons were the least watersoluble of the bunch which would be cool for resist techniques. I am glad they are different because I don't like buying the same thing in a different package and I think it will compliment what I have.
But if you are looking for a watercolor crayon I'd give these a pass because they are not going to release the pigment like other brands will at a lower price.
If you want to purchase any of the products I mentioned here are some great shops! (Affiliate links) have a look around as every shop carries many of the crayons I mentioned above.

Thank you so much for doing this review. I'm not big into the Distress products but these crayons did have me interested. I watched a couple of the demos and they didn't seem like they were any better than some of the products I already have and this video confirmed that for me, thus saving me money. I can use that on paint instead! :)

I have been making cards with a friend for a few months. Wow, I think its actually going on 5 months! She didn't like floral stamps or watercolor. She now likes floral stamps, my Reccolections version of gellatos, watercolor, and will probably be getting the portfolio oil pastels and gel sticks. I just texted her the link for this video. THANK YOU for introducing me to AWESOME products! Oh, she likes my Lyra watercolor crayons as well!

I have been on the fence about the Distress Crayons but I think since I have gelatos and now the Portfolios and also a nice set of some very similar to the Recollections set, I think I'm pretty well set.

I just picked up 7 sets of the Distress Crayons for my bible journaling. If you use water immediately it moves like watercolors. They do dry quickly on porous surfaces. My pages will have clear gesso on first, so I will have a longer working time. I love the fact that when they dry, they stay put. It really depends on what your project is, but I love them for my needs. Thank you so much for comparing other similar products. I didn't know there were so many options out there 😃 ❤Joy

Great video! I saw Tim's demo video and he says he recommends putting a generous amount down and then blending with water. If you color and spray with water, it doesn't move...you have to move it either with a brush, or rubbing with finger. They dry after a minute or so and then they won't move.
@RichBoden
@RichBoden 8 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing this also "water and friction" I think was what he said was needed to blend it. It was the big January craft congress in California that I saw him demoing these at on KZbin. Still good that you can spray over them and blend or move only the bits you opt to touch.

If you don't get them to react with water,could they work on a gesso'd paper? At least you can get more out of the crayons then,with gesso they should have a longer mixable time, you can mix them with a babywhipe or something. I got some good results on gesso with my cheapies. Maybe it will help with the distress ones?

Great review and good to know on the TH crayons. I managed to pick up the last Recollection Gel Crayons at my Mike's after not going in for months....got them on half-price. I'm glad that they are a nice medium to work with and I think get other brands that are more cost effective. FYI, I believe the Recollections Gel Crayons will not be a regular item nor will more come out (according to Craft Test Dummies). I definitely think I'll pick up the Target ones to complement what I have.

Great video! Definitely what I came for. At first I was also disappointed with my Distress Crayons but then I watched Tim Holtz. Tim Holtz say the Distress Crayons are for resist and meant to use with his Distress Inks and Oxides. In other words, the Distress Crayons move but they only move properly when there is water and you physically push the pigments around (rub). Otherwise, they are supposed to sit still. For watercolor Crayons, I love my Gelatos. Faber Castell's own children gel Crayons also feels exactly like Distress Crayon but behave like watercolor crayon.

I am not sure if I read all the comments, so apologies if I am repeating, but I do love the shimmer in the Recollections brand. I know Gelotos have some that are metallics. I don't know which of the other brands in this demo have shimmer, but that might be something that would be a consideration for some people when choosing a product. Thanks for the review.

I saw your haul with the target brand. I went out and bought them. I actually use them more like watercolor paint. I was never into watercolor painting until I bought those. I used the target brand watercolor gel crayons in my coloring at first but now I paint with those and my watercolor paints I bought. I also paint with acrylic paints as well. But with the watercolor crayons I put them in a paint pallet and use them that way.

Hi Lindsay - another great review. I must admit that I'd not heard of most of these crayons, only knowing about neo colour, gelato s and the distress ones. I'm in the uk and personally haven't seen many advertised but read on one of the comments below that portfolio are sold here and a bookstore do a cheap version. I decided to purchase the neutrals pack as they were discounted and I was intrigued. I don't have any point of reference re other crayons so looked to them purely from a distress crayon standpoint rather than as a water soluble product. I've only used a couple and they worked great for adding a subtle background halo or shadow to other work in different mediums if I need something smoother to blend with finger or baby wipe. Whether I'd buy the the other colours? probably not. I think I'd probably opt for another more versatile crayon for more colours but do enjoy the neutrals for shading etc. I am going to have a go at experimenting more with them as don't want them sitting dormant in my craft stash if not needing for that work. I have to admit, since doing my a level art l many moons ago I have a fondness for caran da che ppriducts as used the watercolour pencils for my artwork as well as charcoal and graphite pencils and ink. So the neo colour crayons appeal to my sense of loyalty and enjoyment of the brand, but my low budget can't justify the cost unless they are head and shoulders above the rest and I was doing commissioned work, say. Which I'm not. So..... I will look into the portfolio as they seem on a par price wise with distress crayons but appeared to be much more versatile and fluid. Xxx

Hey, I just surfed over to Tim's video on the distress crayons. You can smudge with a finger and blend with water, but they have a shorter open time - they dry, so if you want to blend with water you have to apparently do it immediately. I'm interested in the Target ones though. They seem like good basic colors.

Love your videos, thanks! I saw a recent video for T.H. Distress crayons and one feature I really liked was that once dry they no longer reacted to water so you could apply water to other parts, but it wouldn't react to the dry distress crayons. Do the others have that quality? I'm leaning toward the oil pastels.

I’m not sure how you can justify comparing distress oxide crayons with other markers - the distress oxide is a totally different type of crayon it does a lot more other marker rather do and you’ll see that when you start messing with it
@moemanley2579

@@rebeccaewing473 distress oxides are stamp inks and sprays. You seem confused. These are crayons not markers. There are distress markers but they're discontinued. She's a professional artist that teaches art, tim is an art product sales person that doesn't teach art, he has videos to sell his products and nothing more. She's unbiased which is refreshing. She's not wrong, the distress crayons don't move as well, I own them.

i know that this is a not a new video. But I did watch a video recently where Tim said himself that distress crayons are water reactive, but they do dry on the page. So he suggests not waiting too long between placing the colour and activating it. I have had luck going after it with a baby wipe .. but again - the second humungous second point, was that he uses gesso on his surfaces. Which from my understanding, i hope that if you see and happen to reply would correct me if i am incorrect in that.. but having the gesso layer would help stop the medium from immediately drying on the paper. It really depends on what you want. I wanted the crayons so badly because i saw others that used it for exactly what I wanted to apply them too.. but I am not up to spending those kinds of prices. I ended up getting a pack for free, and that has been my one and only since. I found I use the Neocolors, Gelatos, Art Crayons by Vicki Boutin (very much an oil pastel type, soft and very blendable.) But I almost never use distress for what I thought i would, but have found other uses and am just as happy with that.

Great video: Of up most importance to me is light fast/color fastness. I have to research but I think most of the products you are showing are not light fast and are basicly used for journals that won't be subject to the color change with the elements. Gelatos gel sticks manufactured by Faber Castell aka Design Memory Craft. Results: Many were extremely poor, some very good depending on the color.

I have a question. I LOVE my lyras and my recollections! I mass produce certain cards and about 1/2 of my red lyra is used. The same goes fir my green Recollections. I use the 2 differently. I don't actually like the lyra over embossing. I ADORE the Recollections over embossing. Should I think of a red caran d'ache and a green pack of gellatos? I find gellatos to be ridiculously expensive but I definitely use some colors WAY more than others and don't need full sets to replace 1 color. Lindsay, thank you for your wonderful reviews and product reccomendations! You are the reason I have lyras. I had never heard of them before.

So I have a few questions about these: I have some portfolios lying around from when I was about five (my grandfather worked for Crayola) and I recently saw them as I was cleaning out my art drawer. Do these work for semi-realistic drawings? And how do you deal with them smearing if you inadvertently drag your had over your work? Also, how do you prevent these from breaking? All mine are stubs now, so can I just pretend like they're regular watercolors and pick up product directly from the crayon onto the brush? Thanks and keep making awesome videos!!!

I mat them under glass so they don't rub and they do not need sealing. Even if I am not ready to frame them the excess oil does seem to dry out or absorb in the paper, I would just place a sheet of glassine or deli paper on the painting to keep it from smudging anything else as a precaution. The sticks are fat and soft so for deail I use a stiff fine brush and pick up pigment from the stick and paint with that or use the wet brush to push the pigment on the surface into place so yes, detail is possible but if you want more precision Caran Dache watercolor crayons are a better bet.

You need to watch Tim Holtz demo on distress crayons he adds water on the black paper for the crayons a match thorough review of the distress crayons yeah it’s good to go through and see what other products do but you did not even add water on the black mat to see the color pop out and come to life

Hi. I have been thinking about getting the Marabu Art Crayons,, but I wonder, since they look so creamy, I worry they go out fast! My Neocolors II seem to last forever. But the Marabu seem to be more plastic package than actual product. That you know of, am I wrong?

I have the kid watercolor crayons,wich I think are awesome...best part... wait for it... I baught it at some sort of dollar store (Dutch name is action, I don't know if it's in the US) if you don't have an action in the US I can sent you a box to fiddle and play with. They look very much like gelato's, I think. Only need more paper prep, wich would only make sence since they are a lot cheaper: Only downside is that they don't have as much colors. But for that price I won't be running to buy the expensive stuff :P (The brand name is from united office & they list under Gel Crayons,but they can be diluted with water)

@zoe1baby

The comparisons really aren't correct across-the-board because for instance the Tim Holtz distress crayons are specifically geared towards using them with other Tim Holtz products and they activate with water etc. and other crayons are for different purposes. They are all good expensive and cheap and some are comparable but some are definitely for specific purposes.

Aren't you his influencer and "content creator"? Lol it's funny seeing his fangirls show up getting all defensive and attacking an honest review. She's a real artist, and she's unbiased and can't be bought, THAT is invaluable. The fact TH can't handle criticism of his products to the point he's turned all comments off on every video speaks volumes. If special videos are required to understand how to use his products properly that's poor product development. I'll stick to her videos, the real artist lol. All the things said about you catty folks and your mean girls group in craft forums are crystal clear right here in this comment section. Sad.

Why not explain you're his collaborator and be honest. Everyone knows who tims zoe is, thankfully this isn't your safe space and y'all can't delete anything you don't like. Honestly I'm shocked you left your bubble to speak. Newsflash honey, criticism is a real thing. The fact you feel the need to attack honest reviews on his behalf just screams of your insecurities. Grow up. I'll wager my entire art room you don't own any of these products and can offer nothing constructive about anything not TH related. I'm so glad real art brands don't have such drama and poor representation.
