Typical of the Anglo-Saxon modernist conception that "If an empire is bigger, it is better than others". When it has nothing to do with it. Right now the British, yes, very big, but most of it was uninhabited territory that they claimed for the crown as their own but where they never settled. Like all the Canadian tundra or the Australian desert. And in Africa what they did was control the important cities and then they send some expedition to the desert/jungle when some tribal chief raised his head. There are parts of Oceania or Canada in which no British set foot, even some parts weren't mapped until 60 years ago with satellites. The Mongol empire the same, almost the entire Asian steppe and above it didn't leave any cultural contribution in the lands it conquered. We are very mistaken with the conception of empires. There have been empires "smaller" than the British and the Mongolian and that have been much more influential and determining both in their time and for history, such as Greece, the Roman Empire, the Portuguese, the Spanish Empire, France...
