The Japanese had started building their empire from way before ww2 though, more like half a century. And it's impressive cause they defeated giants like Russia, China, the British, the French etc. Ultimately it was the US that defeated them.

@@adarshmohapatra5058 Japans plan was to first conquer China, then using the captured resources and manpower to expand out, however since they couldn’t get China to surrender their plan was bound to fail but they went on anyways and over extended themselves. Japan only got so far because of 1. Their choice to follow the west and modernize putting them decades ahead of their isolationist neighbors by using the tech that rapidly developed during Europe’s industrial revolution 2. China being at its lowest point in centuries because of the collapse of the Qing. At any other point in history japan would not have been able to accomplish this. I think Darren was talking about percentage of the population. Yea China is over 1 billion but it only accounts for 18% of total population. Yeah, I was also kind of a weeaboo like Drew when I was younger but I came to realize the Japanese empire isn't underestimated, it's the opposite: Japan as an empire is overestimated objectively speaking. They had a big navy but overall they were lacking behind the West in term of industries and their military budget remained limited most of the time. Their peak gdp (just before WW2) was a bit below France (despite Japan having almost double the population on the mainland), I won't even compare with Britain and Germany. They were effective I won't deny it, and outstanding soldiers (able to obey any order). But in the end, a lot of their initial successes in WW2 had to do with fighting weak opponents. They were isolated as the only great power in the far east, it wasn't competitive like in Europe. I still adore Japan and their empire is super interesting in many aspects, but in terms of power and influence, let's be real, they are overrated. Probably because we all love their culture and products nowadays.

The Holy Roman Empire was grossly underrated. It started in the year 800 with Emperor Charlemagne and fell in 1806 with Emperor Francis II. Hardly anyone knows that much about the Holy Roman Empire; but if you are an Empire that not that many people know much about but last for over 1000 years, then you are underrated to say the least. I think any empire lasting over 1000 years deserves to at least be above C tear.

Me, a Chinese, feel Qing is a little bit underrated, though I don't think it is the best empire in Chinese history. But the Manchus started as a small group of people in Northeast Asia and they managed to take over Ming, a big state/empire, and sustain an imperial rule for almost 300 years. But like I said, I don't think it's the best example of Chinese empires. Qin Empire implemented a centralized bureaucratic system and some great infrastructures (what Chinese love for more than 2000 yrs), and Tang Empire had a really open-minded and cosmopolitan culture at its heyday. I am trying to be neutral, but I guess my nationality might affect my understanding about the Japanese Empire. It was not easy for Japan to expand, but Japan really failed to tamed the land it occupied and collapsed even faster than Qin Empire. I will rank it a tier beneath the British Empire for sure.
@XenSolation. Жыл бұрын
The Qing is maximum A tier but I agree it was definitely underrated during this video. It's artistic culture had a huge impact on modern day art. However, it was an extremely unstable empire following the industrial revolution due to its refusal to modernise and industralize. Many rebellions broke out between the native groups such as the Taiping Rebellion, the Dungan Revolt, the White Lotus rebellion etc. The political climate of the country meant foreign powers could take advantage which had ultimately led to the empire's demise when the Xinhai revolution had struck. They were defeated numerous times and made fools of, having to cede Taiwan in the first sino-japanese war (treaty of Shimonoseki) and having to cede Hong Kong to the British following the first opium war (treaty of Nanking). It had been the richest nation in the world in both the 17th and the 18th century, which is what imo makes it deserving of a higher spot. However, its military prowess was insufficient for the period's omnipresent militaristic policies.

What he doesn’t know is that Portugal was the first European country to round the southern tip of Africa. Back then everyone thought there was a monster swallowing the ships. They also invented quite a few other things in other countries, brought spices to India, including Cinnamon and more. Portugal was quite important back then, they did the unthinkable in many ways, they did what others wouldn’t dare doing, and voyaged far and beyond with the ships back then. Also, the Portuguese created loads of better ways to sail the oceans, they were one of the greatest at sea!

I think you should have included the Chola Empire in the tier list. My reasons are the following: 1. One of the only Indian nations to launch an invasion of lands far outside of the Indian subcontinent. It launched an invasion of Indonesia in 1025, and actually launched an expedition all the way in the Philippines 2. Dominated the Maritime Silk Road while it was at it's height 3. After they conquered Bengal, they shipped a bunch holy water all the way from the Ganges back to their capital.

More fun facts , south East Asian culture entirely is heavily influenced by the cholas ,Tamil culture The word navy came from the Tamil word "navai" or "naavaai" , it's in the literature that was written a few thousand years ago The cholas had 60, 000 WAR elephants ,and they were able to take some of them for war overseas, they had ships like that their navy was one of the strongest in the world at that time They were they richest province on earth at that time. Of course they didn't just dominate the maritime silk road ,they also ruled the spice boleavard. They traded with empires all over the world, primary if not only exporters of spices, ivory and so on. Gotta say they had women generals, nobles, philosophers, merchants, artists and so on just as equal as their male counterparts, they were able to make big donations to people for dams ,creating thousands of small lakes for people and animals alike to reserve rain water that's abundant in South India. There was no gender inequality and racial inequality. People from all over the world visited and lived in small communities, Greek mercenaries guarding the gate, Roman philosophers arguing with local ones. It was a rich Cosmopolitan empire where everyone was welcomed. Though, there was some war slavery that did happen at that time ,not as much as the other empires but still it was happening. Their temples acted as banks that redistributed wealth among people making everyone richer, for example a loan of 100 goats will be given to someone who doesn't have anything and want to be a part of the society,can be of any race and gender. They will be oathed to give back 100 goats in a given time, they take care of the goats, and do agri in the piece of land they are given with the loaned goats or cows or whatever and once the goats populate enough they give back the 100 goats to the temple and that 100 goats is given to someone else who is in need , this probably is one of the bad example of king Raja Raja chola's administration,but it is one among the thousand things he did. Their architecture is less to none, the scientific intricacies and artistic expression in their temples are mind boggling. Their paintings are amazing. Honestly there's so much and not even Indians know about these stuff ,only us tamils do. It was considered the golden age of Tamil people even after thousands of years.

@@charlesstuart3703 There are tons of inscriptions that informs about all these information. Not just that, there's this temple called tanjavur big temple, some people call it "brihadisvara temple" ,which is a architectural marvel which has no basement built, carved out of hard granite, they say it used to be covered in gold like temples usually are...even without any basement the temple withstood 6 major earthquakes, floods and storms and etc. The top piece "vimanam" of the temple is 86 tons if am right, carved out of a single granite. This was built only about a thousand years ago, not too far back in our history yet still it's something to marvel at. There are these inscriptions in that template,which credit everyone who contributed to the temple including the sculptures to generals to merchants ,even the people who donated a few ounces of ghee to the temple to light lamps, in my opinion that makes the structure much more greater than it already is cause i have never ever seen something like this happen elsewhere in any structure. @@ninjafakenpc6695 I dont think it should be considered “Colonization” since The Aceh Sultan wanted it himself. Ottomans never attack or invade Aceh or had an intent of colonizing or annexing it. It was an diplomatic and strategic move made by Sultan Aleaddin of Aceh because the attacks were getting worse and the sultanate couldnt resist and sustain by itself anymore. Im not saying Aceh Sultan was elated because it merged with Ottomans but it was a last resort strategic decision that had to be made in order to survive. And there is a big difference between Traditional Colonisation like French ( Africa , Caribbean , Oceania), British (E.g, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia), Spanish and Portuguese (South America), Dutch (Caribbean,Africa, e.g, South Africa, Surinam, Netherlands Antilles), Americans (E.g, Philippines, Palau, Hawaii) did. Aceh people even to this day are grateful for Ottomans and are currently using its flag in their fight for indipendence from Indonesia. If they felt wronged, colonized or sad, im sure they would not use the symbols and flag of Ottoman Empire since nobody is forcing them to do so and they could easily find some things better to use on their flag.

5:39 Pretty sure Angola and Mozambique were Portuguese colonies way before WW1. Drew is probably mixing up with Cameroon, Namibia and Tanzania that were German colonies but were then given to France and the UK after the war.

No he means that those coastal settlements that were Angola and Mozambique wasn't significantly expanded before after Brazilian independence in 1822.

I love how when it got to colonial empires drew went really in depth as to why they should be in whichever tier they were in but when it got to older empires not in europe, he just randomly placed them in b and c tier and gave them like 3 seconds of talk time. *Also Assyria should be d tier, they were fricking tiny*

Drew, I'm a nerd in Russian History and I can definitely tell you that the Soviets, even if the west says so, never deemed themselves as an empire. They hated the term of imperialism (even though ironically they practiced it in eastern europe). The Russian Empire was the one that really declared themselves imperialist, which is why they fell to the soviets. Oh and I believe Russia should be on SS tier because of how small they started and how rapidly they expanded. They were just the city of moscow when they started, and in just 300 years got to the size we know today.

@@casualfolk7066 one, its not empty, and two the only wasteland there is is in the arctic. Siberia is extremely useful, which is one reason why Russia became a superpower 4 times in a row in its history and is now one of the 5 great powers of the world. Siberia has useful minerals, oil, and good arable land especially in the southern parts for mass collective farming. Saying all of Russia is a wasteland is like saying 905 of america's territory is useless.

As a Spaniard, I would argue the Spanish empire to be a solid S, it was the first global/colonial empire in history, it was the dominant power for 300 years, it was the fourth largest empire (Wikipedia says fifth but that's because they're not counting the northwest United States territory), we had extremely fertile territories in our empire, and that's why nowadays Spanish is the second language by native speakers (the first being Chinese) and one Spanish king, Carlos I of Spain, was simultaneously the king of Spain with all the colonies and Holy roman emperor, basically the two dominant powers in Europe at the time, there's more things to mention, but I consider this to be the "coolest" ones, put more in the comments if you feel like it :)

@@goncaloferreira8543 true, but there wasn't much time difference between the two, and the Spanish one was definitely more important, but that's why I said "global" as an alternative for colonial, the Spanish empire was the first global empire
