Tm another great comparison vid. I was already all in with moon studio when I saw the scaling for takara. Also the original prices for MS couldn't be beat. Unfortunatly is gone up for those wanting to get them now but it's still cheaper than takara.

The only category that surprised me was articulation, Takara has been so big on that for years I would not have guessed they would lose it. On the engineering category I feel it is worth mentioning that Moon managed the cleaner design despite building in the large combiner head and that combiner head not being obtrusive on the other two modes.

When I saw the thumbnail for this video my first thought was this is like a battle between a fat house cat and a cheetah. You knew who would win before you even watched but you just had to watch. Nice work staying fair and impartial. I did not realize Takara was actually more toon accurate in bot mode so thanks for the education.

I just found this video to help me decide on what set to get. Mainly wanted a set since I've always wanted Raiden. My family voted on takara saying it looked cooler to them. Size and accuracy aren't selling points to me tbh since I mainly collect chug. Even with all the faults, I still feel more akin to getting takara set. Great comparison between the 2.

Moon Studio train mode works with Lego Duplo train tracks. And since the wheels rotate all you have to do is add a motor and you can put it around a Christmas tree.

Great video and totally agree with you! Takara's version is more cartoony, but because of the cartoonishness, they took pity on the engineering. And besides, what kind of engineering genius does it take to use transparent plastic as a material for legs and something like that? Yes, and I like the stylized from Moon Studio more, because it is cleaner and more pleasant or something

Great review! Prices for these are similar if going through Japan. I Paid 130 shipped for Shouki. The TT one is small to fit in with HO scale trains. It really made for that audience. Moon Studios really did a great Job on Raiden. I don't think the combined form on the TT one will look near as good.

That Japan price is a pre-order discount isn't it? I've been out of Takara MPs for years now, but that is what I remember. If so now that the figure is out is the lower price even still available? If it is still available at that price than I'm just wrong, but if not it is something that should be mentioned for anyone who isn't aware of the need to preorder.

After owning two moon studio bots I’m probably gonna go with Takara for main reason is I’m also a train fan and I prefer the more accurate trains plus they scale well with actual toy trains

Takara Masterpieces are on a downfall with their recent designs. Truly hope they'll stop and come back to basics and good quality figures in term of scales, materials and engineering. I get they try to be as close as possible to cartoon accuracy but this is dragging them down immensely. Shouki is a perfect example of that, robot mode is accurate but a total mess, looks like a cheap deluxe rebranded as Masterpiece, combiner mode is way out of scale from the Masterpiece line and train mode is looking slick but again, way to small in terms of scale and really, they should know most collectors will display their figure either in combiner mode or in robot mode (which are the two worst ones with MP Shouki). If we wanted a train set, we would buy a train set, not a Masterpiece Transformers. So glad I went with Moon Studio on this one!

Yeah, I completed agree! Don't get me wrong! I want Takara to do well, and I definitely picking up that JetFire! But this figure like you said is not MP. I mean just look at it! At this point I think I've Studio series 86 and Legacy figures that actually looks better than that!! Is so small Kibly!! Not to mention i saw a prototype pic of the Combine mode and you don't even know what to say!! As always great video TMR!

In all fairness or unfairness in the comparison is that 1:toon accruacy Takara made Transformers in Japan if I'm not mistaken so yeah. They got the source material to make it close to the cartoon as they can. 2: the reason they have a more realistic train mode is because the japan model railroad company Tomix helped them out. If they had made working bogies that could turn on curve track and some electronic features, then perhaps they could justify the heavy price tag. We'll see how the other official Trainbots turn out, so far, it's not looking good for Takara.

I didn't quite understand the scale. Which one follows the Masterpiece scale? Looking at Takara's, I found it quite strange. It seems that Takara is really losing her grip on these things. The moment you said the overall quality of build and paint goes to MS, at least for me, Takara has already lost. All the points that Takara won are just there to justify the price. And I highly doubt the transformation it won is noteworthy for a Masterpiece, considering it still lost engineering. Even if you did show combine mode, I don't think it would have the presence of a Masterpiece as I think the standard for MP combiners, in both size and presence, has already been set by Toyworld Constructor, which MP collectors are mostly following now. This Takara offering would have been well-received if it was made part of a premium Legacy line, since they're already offering an update on their Menasor. But if Takara's intent in this is just a love letter to Tokyo Metro, then props to them because I think it achieved that. Anyway, Thank you for a great vs!

Moon studios puts TT to shame. If TT Shouki was released retail chug at a 60-90 price point I think that would be the sweet spot but it’s a joke of an MP. Moon studios set is arguably perfect aesthetic/material/paint wise.

Great comparison. Just got TT’s after it took forever to ship to me. Ironically, the overly small scale is exactly what pulled me into TT’s, because I liked that it scaled with my CHUG collection, since I don’t collect MP scaled cartoon figures. I also much prefer the flawless train mode. That being said, there’s no arguing that MS’s is a severely better figure overall. So many baffling and poor decisions went into Takara’s, I could never recommend it to anyone. The clear plastic, tabs EVERYWHERE (my biggest fear in figures from personal experience), so many engineering hinges that do nothing to clean up the bot mode, and most offensively, the price. I feel a little better about it because I managed to get it for ~$115, but even if they had sold this guy at retail for $80 commander price, I’d argue he’d still feel overpriced to an extent. It’s about a 5/10 figure for me, which is pretty dang low, but he ultimately has no competition. I had an itch that needed scratched for train bots in my collection, and nothing else could offer that in the scale I needed, so I didn’t have a choice. I have some buyers remorse over it, but man do I love that gorgeous train mode lol.

Owning both, I like the Takara better-which shocked me. Moon Shine and Iron Arm are super frustrating figures, while Shouki is not. I agree with the comments about the transparent plastic on the legs, but otherwise I find Shouki to be a fun figure and I’m curious to see how the other bots come out.

A "vs." with anime character models remains the single most useful kind of TF MP vid for me. I even put up with FT fanboisms for it. 😉 Edit: Instead of making whole panels out of translucent plastic, does it seem like TT could just insert clear window inserts behind solid opaque panels (like plastic assembly models)? That should make things feel stronger and more confidence-inspiring.

The impression I've gotten is that adding all those extra parts for separate window pieces would raise the cost. For a small figure already costing $160 driving the price up even more might cost more customers than it adds removing the translucent panels. Of course that is all speculative.

It's apples and oranges... MPG is not Masterpiece. The train is supposed to be HO scale on purpose to match model trains. Which is very cool in and of itself and I appreciate its quirks to do that. But there are some very poor choices made like clear plastic, extensive kibble and paint on the bottom of his feet. It's a Combiner Wars class combiner that is really more CHUG scale not worth the price of admission IMO. Not good enough to fit your train collection and too expensive to fit your CHUG collection. It misses both marks for me.

As someone who has to fix Moon Shine again, replacing the hip joint, I’m totally for the Takara. My experience has me thinking Takara has the better materials and engineering. The other 5 Trainbots are solid, Moon Shine is easily the worst of the 6.

Moon studio/Zeta's biggest issue is the QC, not the materials. Give it a year and the TT figure might have broken hinges and chipping paint all over the figure due to the over-abundance of clear plastic...

I am somewhat surprised that the takara one even got some points. I frankly do not consider it a 'masterpiece'. Moon studios is fastly superior. Edit:. And the fact that takara is more expensive by quite a margin is ridiculous
