Thanks. I’ve had a very nice tenor uke for nearly ten years but also have 15 guitars and totally get the tuning differences so starting to think about the baritone uke also.

A Venezuelan Cuatro is tuned to a,d,f#b I believe it is the same size as the baritone uke you have.

I play mostly a baritone in DGBE, I do have a baritone in "cuatro" tuning. Low G and a low A...it's a great sound!

Glad I found this Vic. Looking at tuning one if my Baritones GCEA with a low G. Getting Aquila Lava CGEA for Baritone. They only make them with High G. But I will use the G from my Baritone to create the low G, I want. Thanks.

I just watched another vid about baritone tuning that seemed interesting. The instrument was tuned to octave GCEA. That way you can use the same chords as a smaller uke and can play along easier. I am going to try this with nylon guitar strings.

Sounds interesting.

I play my guitar in open D and would do the same on a baritone uke.

my Ohana sopranino is in F tuning (cFAD). it barks like a big dog. I busked with it at Pike Place Market (no amplification allowed) and it cut through the crowd *and* traffic noises just fine.

I like the Baritone size, I also like the GCEA tuning for the Baritone. I have several Ukes mostly Tenor size, 4 string , 8 string. I'd like to hear what an 8 string Baritone with GCEA tuning sounds like.
@VicSchmeltz2 жыл бұрын
I bet it would sound great.
@brent__earl6 жыл бұрын
So if it's tuned GCEA (like your cedar Kala), you play it the same as a regular ukulele, the chord name and shape is the same? But if it's DGBE then you would use guitar chords?
@PerpetualJoy6 жыл бұрын
yeah DGBE its just like the bottom four strings of a regular guitar.
@Flint31626 жыл бұрын
The chords shapes are all the same, just with different names. Guitar D is uke G, A is D, G is C, C is F, etc
@JBBluesPhotos3 ай бұрын
@@PerpetualJoyand GCEA is like the bottom four strings of a guitar capoed at the fifth fret. In other words, a Suprano, Concert or Tenor is a Baritone with the first five frets missing 😊

do both ukulele have the same gauge strings?
@riderk70074 жыл бұрын
You would usually need different gauge strings for each of those tunings. The dgbe set would probably break if you tried to tune it all the way up to gcea.
@VicSchmeltz2 жыл бұрын
No they don’t.
@Gibthing4 жыл бұрын
When you tuned the baritone to gcea was it a) standard tuning to the same octave as a tenor b) low g same octave as a tenor c) reentrant gcea an octave lower or d) gcea low g an octave lower?
@riderk70074 жыл бұрын
It was low g same octave as tenor

@@VicSchmeltz Ah, that would make a difference when deciding on buying a baritone uke in A strings, instead of E. I'd have to go with the E setup uke. I truly appreciate your videos. Thanks!

So do you not play the first fret on GCEA ?
@VicSchmeltz2 жыл бұрын
All the time. I try to use the entire fingerboard for different voicing.
@crewsforchrist7625 жыл бұрын
I'm going to get a long neck Tenor and an 8 string tenor, these Ukes are slightly bigger instruments than the standard tenor, for me Baritone tuning belongs on a baritone and Tenor on a tenor
@autumnsilverwinds49905 жыл бұрын
Hang on a second, just so I can understand better. Are these two different TYPES of baritone ukuleles? Or can any baritone ukulele be TUNED either way? Buying my first one soon.
@greasy4655 жыл бұрын
Any Baritone can be tuned to GCEA, Aquila makes a special set of strings for this purpose. You cannot re tune GCEA with standard baritone strings
@VicSchmeltz3 жыл бұрын
You can tune a baritone either way as I did in the video.

You can absolutely play any instrument without knowing the key you're in so long as you have the ability to discern tones in your head. Don't hate on the musically illiterate musicians, we can very much play in key!

So, you basically turned your baritone into a larger tenor... it ceases to be a baritone sound.
