The honest truth is this video while it does cover the 1971 Winternationals in Pomona, Ca., is largely comprised of historical clips from where drag racing had come from up to this point.
"This point" will forever be known as the event where Don Garlits unveiled his new rear-engine dragster in NHRA competition. The unveiling was secondary only to the point he proved he could make it work and create a safer environment for Top Fuel racing.
Butch Maas was the king in the new Funny Car division, enabling team owner Roland Leong to score his second consecutive Winters title.
Legendary Pro Stock driver Ronnie Sox continued to show his dominance as showcased in this Chrysler Corporation inspired coverage hosted by ABC's Keith Jackson.

At 2:44,, One of the first 4 wide on tape??. Could be. Looks like they were getting on the freeway,,lol. The Potvin blower car, with the crank driven add-on kit. Always like seeing that one. Built the plastic model of it, or one like it. Even in 46, just months after the war,,everyone went Drag Racing. The rest of the world was just trying to survive.

This Winternational is before my time. The first Winternational I ever went to was in 1984 after they shut down OCIR.
