The sound you heard from the tree is cicada singing, an insect living a short life in summer. Fun about it, it can feel people's aproaching. Once u walk closer, it will stop singing. If you walk away, it will sing again.

Your videos from China make me miss China even more. I lived there from 2000 to 2015. I lived in Shanghai and Beijing, but visited Xiamen one weekend. Drove out to where they used to fire artillery back and forth with Taiwan. Enjoy amazing China and the Chinese!

3:58 It's a cicada. We think it as a symbol of summer. When summer is over, cicadas die. if you get used to their noise in summer, and one day the noise fade away, you would know it's autumn already. And there's a Chinese vulgarism "夏虫不可语冰", u might be interested in that.

Definitely just the beginning, so much to explore here, with the different mixes of cultures as you start to journey further afield!! Just within a hundred kilometers of me, I think we have six different ethnic groups represented, plus a village made up of refugees from Myanmar, which I'm hoping to get out and see soon!! Times have changed so much in such a short time. Your chinese is pretty damn good already. Quite cool that they are fans of Taiwan there due to Taiwanese (minnan hua) music and what not. Didn't expect that. The Li Ho sounds different to the Li He in Taiwan also.

You likely do speak better mandarin than some of the elderly locals. Minnan, or Southern Min language is mutually unintelligible to Eastern Min languages of Fuzhou and Ningde, which aren't very far away. The Sinitic languages are very diverse! You're in primary Hokkien country, that is culturally the closest region of the Chinese mainland to Taiwan. The dominant Hokkien/Soutern Min vs other immigrant groups (primarily Cantonese Hakka) formed the foundation of Taiwanese political divide which still persists (but further complicated by other factors) to this day.

Hello Jake. After all the fun with both episodes, I have a question: I don't know if I have missed something but your language interaction level is pretty good for someone who just got his scholarship. Did you study Mandarin in Australia before going to China? I have watched people who were in China many years but still can't speak or understand as much as you do. Enjoyed all the videos btw.

The convenience in Chinese cities even for a foreigner like myself is the best I have ever seen. In fact, you will find Chinese cities from the ocean to the Western-most part of China are very convenience, safe, and modern. The town planning in excellent in all cities. There is no comparison between Melbourne and Xiamen. Is Xiamen a good place to live? Given the opportunities, I will live there given the low living expenses and the abundance of good housing and outdoor places for bicycling.
