An interesting theory I saw someone write on was that the stormtrooper's apparent incompetence in many parts of the original trilogy was a testament to their training. In several parts both on and off screen, we see the stormtroopers for who they're supposed to be: well trained infantrymen. But, you can notice a decline in their competence once the homing beacon was placed on the Millennium Falcon, and even Leia herself said, "they let us go." The stormtroopers gave chase, but apparently had orders to let the rebels escape, and so they became just competent enough to give the rebels a reason to leave, but they likely missed their shots on purpose, which actually takes a LOT of training to do right.

Here's a little something with which to break the minds of people who believe Stormtroopers are incompetent... Stormtrooper accuracy is actually portrayed very realistically in the original trilogy. In most confrontations, particularly when concern over civilian casualties is non-existent for any reason, the side that generates the highest volume of fire will win. In actual military confrontations, only a small fraction of shots fired will hit their mark. In every original trilogy confrontation save one, the Stormtroopers are very realistically portrayed when the factors surrounding each confrontation are taken into account. This includes their loss to the Ewoks in Jedi - many times in history a technology superior force has been soundly defeated by enemies that had the advantage of camouflage and the element of surprise - particularly when the ones with those advantages will pick up and use the better weapons fallen enemies drop(as we see the Ewoks do) to minimize their deficiencies. The only time in the original trilogy that a Stormtrooper confrontation is not realistic shown is in Empire Strikes Back, when Lando and company are trying to escape Bespin - specifically, when they're stuck at the door trying to access Falcon. Prior to that, they were moving targets(difficult for even the most trained marksmen to hit), but once at the door, there's no cover or choke point(like in the cell block confrontation on the Death Start) to shield the heroes, and the troopers were not under orders to let them escape(as when the heroes were escaping the Death Star). This is the ONE time the Stormtroopers absolutely without any question should have come out on top, but failed. I find it quite sad that Rebels canonized the idea that they just suck. Woulda been a better idea to roll with it and find a way to show how realistic the original portrayals actually were.

To add on to the ewoks, think of it this way: You are a soldier in an unknown planet that you have never seen. Suddenly, strange creatures emerge and throw rocks. Now, the ewoks where very strong. You could not easily carry rocks that size, much less throw them with ease and accuracy. Plus, many of the soldiers who dropped down weren't dead, just knocked unconscious

My biggest gripe with the mandalorian is the treatment of stormtroopers. They’re just used as comedy relief at this point. Facts: 1- Stormtroopers missed the main characters on purpose (most of the time) so they could track them to their base. 2- Stormtroopers were only beaten by Ewoks because Ewoks are literally small, agile beasts that have the strength of a damn gorilla. 3- E-11 Blasters were good or were horrible, depends who you ask. 4- Stormtrooper armor was the best in the galaxy, even Darth Vader wore it. 90% of the time you see a downed Stormtrooper he is unconscious, not dead. I imagine the Ewok's spears and stones crushed and pierced the stormtroopers' armor. The armor is made for defense against blasters, not physical objects. Chewie's bowcaster is also armor piercing if I recall. They made that clear in The Force Awakens when he shattered that one trooper's armor, but I think it's always been the case.

The one episode where they constantly missed was A New Hope, where Skywalker et al were SUPPOSED to escape so the Death Star could track the Millennium Falcon to the hidden rebel base, as Tarkin says to Vader after they blast away. So the troopers were likely under orders to make it look good but don’t kill ‘em! Actually a much more difficult task than just recapturing or killing them.

Stormtroopers were actually selected from best of the best in imperial academy. They are actually expert marksman,especially in CQB situation. They miss a lot is because first,stormtroopers in death star was ordered to miss so that they can track the rebel base once Han Leia Luke and Chewie made an escape to Yavin 4. In war accuracy is subjective, mass concentration of fire is generally preferred, also someone with way too much time analyzed the opening scene of A New Hope and the stormtroopers accuracy was very high by military standards and far superior to the Rebels

In war, the accuracy of infantry is ultimately not all that relevant. Infantry are mostly there to secure and hold down positions. Only a relatively small percentage of casualties in war are due to small arms fire. Instead, most casualties in war are caused by artillery, which is what you use when you actually want to kill the enemy.

@@Backonos No dude's right. Infantry alone just exists to hold positions and any ground the enemy lost and it's not only for insurgencies. When taking ground, typical conventional doctrine calls for a combined force of Armor (tanks, IFVs, APCs, etc), close air support, and artillery. The reason why infantry can't be used to storm places like the European plains is because they can't keep up by themselves and they're just fleshy targets compared to armored vehicles. Take the Gulf War as a best recent example. The Storming of Iraqi positions during Operation Desert Storm was mostly conducted by Coalition tanks and IFVs with the support of artillery.

Has anyone (including rebels creators) thought of the fact that in 1977-83 it was a lot more expensive to show a laser hit someone than miss? A hit required a pyrotechnic effect that was had to be small, shoot in one direction, and look a lot more intense than it was. A miss did not require it to be totally safe to perform on a human, since they were happening on a piece of prop. Also, hits required special shirts, and burn a hole in the shirt. Not to mention the actor had to give good reaction in one try. Shooting and reshooting blaster hits with practical pyrotechnic effects was expensive and difficult. THAT, my friends, is why stormtroopers (and everyone, including sharpshooter Han Solo) miss most of their shots. I think when Obi Wan says "only stormtroopers can fire so accurately" we can assume, as the story goes, they are soldiers of high accuracy.

The only time they're ever portrayed as being inaccurate (I.E. the one thing everyone gives them shit for) is on the Death Star in A New Hope, and that time, they weren't trying to kill their targets, they wanted them to escape. They placed that tracking beacon on the Falcon, that'd be useless if the gang was laying dead on the ground riddled with blaster fire. So, what was the beacon for? Well, my hypothetical friend, I'll tell you. The beacon was to lead them to the rebel base, something they didn't know the location of and were just dying to blow up. Remember why they captured Leia in the first place? They were interrogating her to find out where the base was. She fed them a lie, they knew she lied, and blew up her entire planet as she watched. They were also going to execute her anyways, since she wouldn't talk. This prison break gave them an opportunity to use Leia to help them find the base again. So, why did that require inaccuracy? Simple: dead rebels don't fly away and lead you to the rebel base. They had to herd them down the halls somehow, and how convenient it was that the one path they weren't blocking off was the one that led straight to the Falcon, wasn't it? It was an obvious move, and they played right into the Empire's hand. What else could they do, as well? Die to the Stormtroopers? Get thrown in the prison block? It was a rather genius move. The tactical cunning of the Empire is shown in many instances. Such as that time when Han charged at a group of Stormtroopers, only to be met with a larger group of Stormtroopers, who forced him to charge back in the other direction. That's a simplified version of an actual battlefield strategy employed by the Germans in World War 1 during the Meuse-Argonne, called Defence in Depth tactics. In it, you don't seek to prevent the advance of an attacker, but delay it by placing deliberately small and weak forces far ahead of your main forces, who are larger and stronger. The smaller force is meant to cause additional casualties ahead of time, and lure your opponent into the trap. They're essentially live bait, albeit bait that fights back and whittles down the enemy a bit, as well as making them cocky and overconfident, so your main forces can beat the shit out of them. It certainly made the Meuse-Argonne hell on earth for the American army. The Meuse-Argonne is still the bloodiest battle in US history almost 100 years later. That's Defence in Depth tactics, the ones the "incompetent" Stormtroopers modified on the Death Star. They were using a tactic of deliberately missing to make their targets run away and take the bait: a ship they did seemingly nothing to. If they really didn't want them to escape, why not scrap the Falcon? Why not disable the engines, or rig the ship to explode the second they try to take off? It's simple. They wanted them to leave. And their strategy would have worked, too, had it not been for Luke being Force-sensitive and blowing the reactor.

He also ate a lot of bananas to bulk up so he looked 18 (judging from my personal experience with too much bananas, I'm surprised they didn't think he had cholera afterwards. Assuming that that's genetic, of course). We don't know if he was wounded or if they found out he wasn't 18. From the casualties, I'd have to guess the former, or maybe a combination of the two, in that he may have told them his real age to be sent home rather than be sent to a field hospital. We don't know mostly because he died before my father was even born, and with my grandfather gone, I don't have anyone left alive to ask. Just to shed some perspective on the matter, I suppose.

Think this myth came from several scenes in episode 4. You had Han, Luke and Leia fighting storm troopers on the death star. Those 3 are decent shots but they are also surrounded by wall to wall stormtrooper targets in all directions on the Imperial base. The storm troopers on the other hand are trying to avoid shooting each other and damaging systems on the base. This puts them at a disadvantage. In the normal course of events Han, Luke and Leia would have been captured or killed, but they had the force on their side and of course the jedi Obi-Wan, who definitely took storm troopers seriously.

I don't buy the excuse that making the Stormtroopers suck at shooting was necessary to keep the protagonists alive. There are so many things the protagonists could do to prevent their own demise with out compromising the Stormtroopers. They could actually take cover for once, or use strategy to outsmart their foes. I mean they stand in the open 90% of the time in the films, and it looks ridiculous. Maybe wear armour as well, so they could justify surviving a few shots? A movie does not have to make the enemy utterly incompetent in order to keep the protagonists alive. I mean look at real life... I don't think Simo Hayha managed to kill 500 Soviet troops by himself, because his enemies were a bunch of morons. No, it was because he knew what he was doing. The reason Stormtroopers are shit shots, is because of the limited resources from the studio. To make the "Stormtroopers vs Rebels" conflict more believable, it requires better acting from the extras, professional fighting choreography, knowledge of military equipment and tactics, etc. This kind of stuff can get expensive, and the filmmakers probably do not want to bother with it.

That first scene of stormtroopers is actually a shining example of them that no star wars media has really kept up. Fighting through a choke point that the enemy knows you’re coming through but still managing to inflict more casualties on them is… impressive to say the least.

@@sgtrpcommand3778 my grammar may not be to liking you yazi, but the forces on endor weren't the 501st also your analysis is flawed. Firstly both the rebels and empire got taken by surprise from the ewoks, on that note Ewoks are very strong, stronger than humans, 3rd they laid ambushes against the imperial who stood out with their white armor. Lastly the empire almost won once their walkers were in place overall your the one wrong here.

Stormtroopers hit most shots, its just that the characters have “important character” armor and as such are immune to side/background characters
