I am Korean, 77 years old now living in Canada. When I was in school in Korea we used learn basic 1,300 Kanji,漢字 so for me I undetstand every word but in some cases we, Korean prounce differently whereas in many cases we prounce almost same or slightly differently. Alrhough I completely understand words but need to learn different way of pronunciation. It is good tools to summarize very basic Kanji, 漢字. Thank you for posting, Arigato.

When you give up Sino characters, you lose one part of your culture. At Ho Chi Ming History Museum and I was able to read the ancient scripts on display but the Vietnamese themselves can't. We Singaporeans whose first language is English have no problem learning 2000 Chinese characters and are able to read and recognize them. So, I don't understand why Koreans have to 'discard' Hanja. For example, a person whose name is 재민 which can be 宰民,宰珉,哉民,哉珉,載民,載珉,渽民, 才敏 and so on. We don't know the meaning of his name by reading the Hangul. In the movie The Classic 클래식, present-day college student finds her mother diary and starts reading it. In reality, she would be able to read it without keep looking up the dictionary because her mother must have used a lot of Hanja while writing her diary. There's a low-budget short film about ancient times and there's scene depicting a crowd reading a notice but it was not visible to the audience. I think nobody in the crew knew how to write that notice in Hanja.

koreans have the closer pronounciation to modern chinese. koreans formulated these words into their own language at around the ming dynasty/ early joseon dynasty. japanese did it during the nara period/ tang dynasty. and they borrowed the letters to stand in place of native japanese words that have a completely different pronounciation. and thus their pronounciations are a lot more divergent from chinese than korean, which retained a slightly shifted version of chinese.
Although I am a Japanese who watched the video casually because it came up in a recommendation, I was surprised to notice that I could understand and use all the idioms in the video and that I would learn them in six years of elementary school. I think this video is very useful for foreigners learning Japanese!

この動画は、822の漢字が使われています!🐹 This video uses 822 different kanji characters! 🐹.
@prim_manga98859 ай бұрын
Hello, I was wondering why did you use 使われています instead of 使っています??
@Hamusuke-japanese9 ай бұрын
Hello! That's quite a difficult question... 使われています is the passive form of "使う". It means "is being used" or "has been used", indicating that the subject is the recipient of the action. In my context, "この動画は、822の漢字が使われています" translates to "In this video, 822 kanji are being used" or "822 kanji have been used". It emphasizes the kanji themselves being used in the video, not who is using them. 使っています is the -ている form of "使う", which indicates a continuing action or a current state when used with certain verbs. It translates to "is using" or "are using". However, this form focuses on the doer of the action. If you were to say "この動画は、822の漢字を使っています", it would imply "This video is using 822 kanji", focusing on the action performed by the video (or, implicitly, the video's creator).@@prim_manga9885

This is a great video, it's easy to understand, slow enough to repeat the sounds and has a clear speaker reciting the words. There are a few words that I don't understand or I find ambiguous because the context isn't given. Like @23:37 "mother". Is this a polite way to talk about my mother, refer to my mother directly, ask about someone else's mother, ask if a person is a mother? The context would be immensely helpful with all of the words where it is necessary to understand to properly use it.

A very helpful video! ❤ I found it very useful. Though, I was having a hard time understanding the difference between 上空 and 天空. They both said sky but the pictures didn't help at all. I had to look it up. 天空 is sky, 上空 is the space above, such as a airplane flying above you or drones above a venue. Very difficult to convey through picture but the caption on things like that could use some tweeking.
