I was entertained by this video -- it was my job for 20 years (until health-forced retirement)! I didn't have the time to grease bolts, managers like to see all bikes built in less than 20 minutes. I always told them "you can have it that way if I adjust nothing, but the customer will bring 100% of them back." So they left me alone to do what I did best -- make that substandard stuff as rideable as it could be. There was a time when the premier LBS in town would see Walmart bikes roll in their front doors. It was cheaper to replace it than have them work on it -- they could have just sent the customer back to the store where they bought it. But they sent the customers to MY store. 20 years, 44K bikes built/repaired, 1 failure, and it was a factory defect I couldn't fix. Retired now, barely able to stand for 15 minutes... but I've built myself 2 ebikes, a lowrider, and a Specialized Hardrock rebuild so I can get back to pedaling. It's in my blood.

To the entire Park Tool video team, Thank you so much for this assembly video. I cannot tell you how much it has helped me. I just purchased a Schwinn very similar to this one for my son. It was a first for me. I usually buy from my local shop but the pandemic induced shortage gave me no choice but to buy from a department store. It was also the first time I assembled a bike and it took me about 8 hours over two days. I had to stop often to re-watch a Park Tool video for the specific component I was assembling or inspecting. After watching several Park videos to prepare, I purchased your "Big Blue Book", the entry level Park Tool kit and Park Home Mechanic repair stand. Having the right tools made all the difference. My wife complained about how long it took me but my kids are impressed it has not fallen apart.......yet. So again, thank you Park Tool team. Sincerely, a new Park Tool customer aka "handy dad" to my kids.

I've found that the fastest/most efficient way to set up a rear derailleur on a new bike is to ignore what might/might not have been done at assembly. I check derailleur is tight on the hanger & hanger is visually straight, and shift to the smallest sprocket/biggest chainring, then wind in the barrel adjuster almost fully (hides the silver part, so looks nicer that way too), set the H limit screw as per manufacturer's spec, and then release and re-tighten the cable whilst keeping a medium tension on it. In 99% of cases, the indexing will then be correct (or within half a turn of the barrel adjuster from correct) and then all that remains is to set the L limit and B-angle screws.

This makes me think of a ToysR-Us “adult” mountain bike I worked on. Full suspension TANKER with coil spring rear (shock?). Plastic covered seat, steel stem, skinny steel handlebars that looked like they were from a child’s bike, a bizarre spoke pattern on the wheels, and a front derailleur that did not resemble any derailleur Ive ever witnessed, nor did it even come close to shifting. It was so bad, you could see the shifter lever bending as you tried to shift across the front three rings. Pivot bolts where halfway out of the rear triangle and shock mounts, too! I installed a cheap set of Giant mtb bars, a $15 Shimano front derailleur, and a take-off seat. What a difference. The owner told me after he initially purchased the bike on sale, he took it home, tried to ride it and said, “oh well, I guess I just wasted $99.00”. Now he can actually ride the bike. It’s such a shame, bikes like that will frustrate someone from getting in to cycling.

I once ended up with a Mongoose Wal-Mart bike. The components on it were terrible. The front fork had so much flex, you could see the V-brake mounts move when you squeezed the brake hard. I ended up having to install a 1990's style MTB brake booster on it just to be able to get it to stop properly. There is an art to tuning up cheap bikes. If you do it right, it'll give the bike the best chance for having a long service life.

Tightening 6 dollar crank with 137 dollar torque wrench. Good Job. I think we can really understand now the frustration of a bike mechanic when he gets a big box bike like this. Though the components are worse then rubbish, the frame should be ok with light xc riding. That's not a bad frame overall.

Interesting. My bike in a box - never took the tires/tubes off rim. After a few rides, was going home with bike in car and heard air leaking out realized later it was the rear going flat. The flat was due to debris of some sort on inner diameter of tube, was not from penetration of the tire. Never found the debris. Inner rim was smooth. Made a few pit stops on drive home, surprised it waited so long to happen and not on the road.

Hi! Thanks for the video and merry christmas. May I ask you a question about hubs? I have thru axle 12x142 hub shimano m6010hb. When I set it with little play and tight the axle on the bike, the play is go away that is right. But bike doesn't ride well. Then I set more play on the hub and when tight the axle, there's play on the rim for about 0.5-0.7 mm . But the bike rides really well. So my question is: can I leave 0.5-0.7 mm play on the rim? I also read shimano allows to set this play cuz there may be some differents between the same cup and cone hubs in processe of manufacturing unlike sealed bearing. You have to find sweet spot for you hub which will work well. May this play on the rim cause issues in the future? Thanks a lot.
@ThisIsRocker05
@ThisIsRocker05 4 жыл бұрын
In terms of what's best, I'd prefer no play. Play starts from small issues but can develop into big problems. Most frequent causes for play are bent axles and bearings not seating correctly. Overtime that little play can destroy the cups and cones by distorting their shapes and surfaces so they no longer function correctly. Tightness on the other hand, while it can't distort the hub components, it damages them by pitting the surfaces. The cups and cones are subjected to more stress since they're crushed beyond what the manufacturer intended, and subjected to a lot more heat, due to the increased friction. In your case I'd start by disassembling the entire hub, inspecting every piece individually, and replacing anything that seems damaged. Make sure that the axle is straight, the threads are not chewed up, the cones rotate perpendicular to the axle without wobbling when installing them, the bearings are shiny and the size the manufacturer intended & the cups look polished.
@parktool
@parktool 4 жыл бұрын
Small adjustments of that cone make a big difference. There should be a better "sweet spot" that allows no play when installed at the rim. A thru axle we can assume is straight. But when moving the cone wrench, use small increments, just a few degrees, as you move from play to no play. Generally, you want the loosest setting but with no play.

What sequence should I disassemble and reassemble to learn the most? Should I start with removing/disassembling wheels and hubs or do you recommend a sequence that beginners should start with? Thanks
@parktool
@parktool 4 жыл бұрын
Some of the skills to focus in on right away would be how to put wheels on and then take them off. Then tires on and off. From there derailleur adjustment is a great skill to learn. Then get into the handlebars and the seat adjustments. I would suggest learning more about those things before putting too much time into other stuff.
