This videos has been gold. I believe my Okuma has the same head stock to bed orientation as this machine. I’m glad I stumbled on this video I’ve been chasing center line alignment for a few days. Time to go try this!

I have done many lathes like this and have been to the Romi factory in Brazil. They actually have an amazing facility and I think that their Engineers are pretty ok too. The best way to tram a head in like this is to use a test bar in the chuck. Get it aligned with the Z axis plane. Then, using two tenth indicators mounted to the headstock near the adjusting bolts, move the headstock back or forth to align the turret centerline. Then take a test cut and make minor adjustments from there. An acceptable taper should only be about .0005” in 6.0000”. The Hardinge Quest line has the same setup where the X axis is on a slant but the head is not. It’s a little work but by making the machine like this, alignments can be made perfect for very precision parts. This machine that you were working on was a collaboration between Romi of Brazil and Bridgeport. Good job, nice video.

In my point of view, I would first start by checking spindle play and runout because if some of the bearings are going bad you will never get proper concentricity and your final part finish ajnd dimensions will suffer, Then I would follow by mounting a test bar in the spindle and go for the head stock alignment to verify if there is any taper. As for the tail stock, I think it is better to be able to align the whole bed like it is the case for this machine because every point of travel of the tail stock will drive parallel to the spindle axis, not just at a set distance wich would be the case if only adjusting the tail stock like we normally find on a regular manual engine lathe. Great series indeed! I did learn quite a bit here. Thanks for posting Wes.

From where i sit you did a great job Wes, thanks for sharing your time while doing this time consuming job. I have to do this on a Mazak QT when i have the time too. It is not running as yet, it is a project that i am working on when i have the limited time. But it will be great to have it back in one piece and running again. Regards Peter.

i think my tsugami m08sy is similar with the head stock and z ways being flat, but the x is on an incline. but i have y axis to comp out centerline

Excellent video series - good maths, or math as you fellows say :-)

Wouldn't it be better to first test for taper turning (maybe without turning but just by sweeping the spindle nose) and adjust it and then check for the center height? I don't want to sound like smartypants especially as I never adjusted a head stock myself - I'm just curious :) EDIT: Maybe I should stop commenting before watching the whole video as I just saw you were not moving the center line but the angle of the head stock :D

Is it audio noise or are the spindle bearings shot..I would usually check for play in the slide ways before doing the alignment...
@WatchWesWork7 жыл бұрын
It's a gear drive spindle, so it's kind of noisy. There is nothing wrong with it though.

Great video.. When you had the lined up the spindle, at 21.00 , do you store the X value as a machine variable?

can you adjust for taper using software in the program ?
@WatchWesWork7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, but it's better to have the machine aligned properly. We want to put our best foot forward.
