This whole series is so good. After flubbing most of my drywall/mudding attempts over the years, I can honestly say that my current project (a small bathroom remodel), looks as good as it does as a direct result of Jeff's tips. My builder did a bad job finishing the ceilings in a new house . I can see joints shadowing in all bedrooms only at night! He doesn’t want to fix it claiming that it’s not a warranty issue! Im so disappointed and will open a case against him. Im going to send them this video in order to learn from it! Great explanation. I wish i was your customer!it seems that you’re customer oriented!
@stargateproductions5 жыл бұрын
I feel bad for you but your builder might win because mud work is considered cosmetic and not a structural/warranty issue. I know cause the area I live the majority of new builds have poor drywall finishing. Technically speaking, all a builder is required to by law is to tape the seams and spot the screws for fire code. I wish you all the best though!

Hi Jeff! We did the prime check and filled holes/dents with 45 min mud. Then sanded and primed again. Now we're seeing the 45 min mud areas flashing through the primer... Im guessing we should've used all purpose mud. Do we just keep applying primer until they dont show through? Fyi we used zinsser fast prime 2 primer/sealer (water based). Thanks!

Hey, great video, I was doing work for a homeowner once, and when I did this after I primed she looked at me as if to say, you didn't do a good job finishing. When in fact it was and this method improves the over all finish. It is really important that you touch-up because there are imperfections in the drywall. No one is perfect at mudding and sometimes there is damage to the drywall from manufacturing that you don't see until primer applied.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY7 жыл бұрын
Truth is priming is the beginning not the finishing!

Important tip @ 7:48 to tint your touch-up mud slightly with line chalk so that your fixes stand out and you don't miss any when sanding.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY7 жыл бұрын
I prefer to use beige cgc mud for this step or 45 self mix. They stay dark. Adding a color is definitely an option if you have that available. I don't use chalk anymore just a laser.

All good - my tip was for your viewers as it didn't really stand out in the video to either use a darker mud or color it. You mentioned that yours was brown but I could see that being glossed over by a viewer. Anyway - good video and very important step in the finishing process!

Love your instructional videos. Unlike so many others on here, you get to the point quickly without all the bull. Sometimes I think they believe that they get credit per word...enough already...I don’t need to know your personal tragedies in order to learn how to mud a wall or hang a fan. Thank you for avoiding that habit! I do have one quick question...why don’t you do a final coat over the entire wall? A skim coat? I was taught that when you don’t, it leaves a subtle difference when you paint. Mostly because then you are painting two completely different surfaces. Once it was pointed out to me, it was all I could see. Again, love your vids & have picked up quite a few great tips...esp love that you shared the “BIG SECRET” about how to repair last minute holes, etc. I was actually surprised how much I had to learn from you. My only confusion was when I didn’t see you skim coat the entire wall...hoping you have a good explanation. Keep up the hard & quality work. Brian
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
a skim coat is for level 5 installs. not really popular. most of us use a primer with plenty of solids that make the primed wall a consistent surface. Cheers!

I really enjoy and appreciate your helpful videos! I live in an older home, and the drywall they used back then, were panels ,which were approx. 16" x 32", which weren't leveled out very well with mud. ! I can see every joint in my ceilings and up along my staircase wall! Especially , like you mention , when the evening sun sets. You can also easily feel the dips with your hands. I just cant believe that when there were installed,that they did it half ass. (Usually the older homes are built better than todays quick builds) So, what would be the best method to smooth these out ? Obviously there has been a few coats of paint as well on the walls and ceilings over the years. (approx. 60yrs). With such small panels used, Id be basically skim coating the whole surface! Would all the paint need to be scuffed first? Even though it seems like more more work, I dont know if putting 1/4" drywall on top, and finishing that would be easier? It would less mudding , i.m.o. I'd appreciate what your approach would be. Thanks!

I love your videos.I have a problem.When it rains hard the water enters the wall of the basement, the water comes out of the iron window where the ashes of the chimney fall. A contractor checked it and said that the land outside is uneven and the water accumulates outside. What solution could you please give me?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY6 жыл бұрын
every house needs proper drainage or (grading) . make sure your down spouts direct water away from the house and that the land around your property has a slope to move surface water away from it. This can be achieved by putting topsoil and sod around the property . Over time every home has the earth washed away. It is very normal to need to do this type of maintenance.

Jeff, great video and I'm a new fan! I've been pretty meticulous with my drywall, following your instructions and guidance. I have been filling imperfections, sanding back, etc. I am however stuck on one edge. Every other edge looks pretty good, but this edge looks terrible. It's the ceiling/shower wall edge and you can definitely see the transition between the mudded edge and the rest of the drywall on the ceiling after priming. It's pretty noticeable from 6-8 feet. The primed mud has a smooth consistency and the drywall has a well, primed drywall consistency. The shadows make it stand out like a sore thumb. I have sanded back the edge thinking that it must be a high spot along the plane. Even after sanding and repriming, no dice. Still very noticeable. Any suggestions?

If it is smooth to the touch then paint it 2 coats of finish. sometimes the texture will be different until the paint texture is applied. Cheers!

I'm a novice and really found this series useful. My situation is bottom 2 feet of existing painted/textured wall was cut away due to flooding in several rooms. I installed the new drywall with the tapered side butting up to the existing drywall, which is full thickness. Maybe that wasn't a good idea, but do you have any tips on how to best conceal the joint in that situation when doing tape and mud? I'm still on my 'test room', but what I did was use the 'fill your gaps' coat to fill in the taper and let dry prior to doing the taping coat. I'd like to know what a pro would have done:) You make it look easy. Thanks! - Jon

Just follow the steps for doing as butt joint. This is the same process, your joint should finish around 24 to 30 inches wide when you are done all 3 coats after taping.

Hi evert, simply cut the drywall to fit and have the tapered joint towards the ground. this will leave you a butt joint the length of the wall. once smooth you can add your texture on the second coat!

Yeah I was also pretty confused by this, this should be video 12, and sanding should be number 11, then painting 13.
