In the early stages of walking with a dog (much bigger than yours) he suddenly pulled me to 5 o'clock while I was on the affected leg, and unaffected just before contact with the ground. I managed to squat down and turn sideways so I knelt on the grass. So the dog trained me well because I need to be able to react suddenly, usually with a step. Have a nice week.

Hi Doctor Tobias, I just wanted to tell you and the stroke survivors that I started doing a great exercise which is using a weighted hula hoop. Hula hooping is helping so much to perfect my balance. I couldn’t do it first , but kept trying, and now I am able to do it much better. It’s interesting that this activity helped to wake up my left side even more. I would like to definitely recommend it to stroke survivors who are a little further down the road to recovery.

Great video. I will try some of these exercises this week. Thankfully, my balance has been pretty good in spite of a severe stroke, but there’s certainly room for improvement. And I imagine some of these higher level exercises will be quite challenging! I had a near fall on a (pretty difficult) hike this past week. The hardest part was getting over some fallen trees. At one point, I was getting over a tree and my strong foot got caught in a vine. I was able to catch myself, even used my weak hand/arm to stabilize myself. I was happy I caught myself, but frustrated I didn’t see the vine. 😅
@rehabhqofficial2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing this Randy! Your situation with the "near fall" is very similar to the one that the person described to me in the video. :) She also has pretty good balance so it was surprising to her when she lost her balance doing something that doesn't seem difficult :) Gotta plan for the unexpected :) But glad you didn't fall! Have a great week!

Good evening, The series of exercises have been wonderful, but I ask this question. I am overweight so I'm the board doesn't balance without a struggle. Would you suggest I lose the added weight to accomplish the board being balanced?
@douglasreas93532 жыл бұрын
Wow! This is exactly what I need to work on. Thanks so much for covering this topic. These are great exercises. I can well identify with going around the house with fingertips on whatever steady object I can find. My physical therapist once asked me to do a "karaoke" walk (legs crossing alternating). It was a mess. I have been working on exercises for ankle balance muscles, but understanding the need for a step correction and practicing those exercises is a breakthrough. I am tempted now to purchase a wobble board and challenge myself. Thanks again. Exactly what I need at this point.
@rehabhqofficial2 жыл бұрын
Hi Douglas! Thanks for sharing your story and your progress! A carioca step is quite advanced :) Glad your PT knew what was good for you 😊. If you purchase a wobble board make sure you have it on carpet or something where it will have a little traction. Stepping off of the board can cause it to slip.

ive been in recovery for over 2 yrs still limping how do advance to walking somewhat normal my neck vein is totally clotted and still unable to use left arm or hand
@rehabhqofficial2 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! Thanks for watching and for sharing your story! It is not uncommon for someone to have an occluded/clotted neck vein after a stroke. That does not mean you can't still make meaning improvements in your movement. As far as walking, I have done a series on walking progression that I think might be beneficial. Here is a playlist to check out kzbin.info/aero/PL6OzQQ8F1uHAYsBzqvGLkE8wUrCrUwyvK. As far as the hand and wrist, keep working on it! You got this!

Believe, believe in recovery, it will come, it takes years, recovery can be done decades after the event. My recommendation is to put a dumbbell on the arm and leg in order to get a stretch. Make circular movements of the hands, legs, head. Gentle circular movements in all positions standing, sitting, lying down. Transfer weight to the injured leg, climb stairs with the injured leg. Sleep on a hard surface. Good luck with God's help.
