Well just recently did this to my 2015 WR450F and I found the bike has several non functional wire terminals that are not used, I found one on back end behind battery and wired power there after determining that it was switched on or off by the existing main power switch. I found this better as it allows use of accessories and lights and horn but does ensure all power off as well.

Hey man thanks for the video! I have an ‘07 and the wire colors are different in my relay than yours are so I’m not able to hook my power up like you are. Any suggestions? I hooked it up to the battery just to see if it would all work and nothing came on :/

Thanks for the video. I’m reworking a 2008 Yamaha WR450F. Does your kill switch and starter replace the need for your factory “main switch”? I’m trying to consolidate and save space but don’t understand the need for ignition, start, main and kill. Seems like overkill. Thanks!

Hey, I'm trying to diagnose a possible wiring issue on my 2014 wr450f and was hoping that you would be nice enough to help. I bought the bike used and don't know if the original owner modified the headlight wiring. The issue is that when you press the on button behind the front number plate the headlight comes on, if the bike sits with the headlight on then starting becomes an issue. On all other wr's that I have owned, the headlight is only on when the bike is running, which I believe you also stated in the video. At 14:29 your bike is off, with the switch on, and it appears that the headlight is on. Can you please confirm wether or not the headlight is on when the engine is off? Thanks!

Man i need a kit.. i chose the hard way on accident and just ordered turn signals, a flashing relay and a handle bar signal switch (bike does have brake light already) i feel like theres going to be alot of soldering tommarow

2014 WR450F- followed your video and have mine wired exactly like yours EXCEPT I have a Rear Hand Brake which I put in the brake light on it as well (just spliced it in to the harness for the front brake light switch.) Everything worked great for 1 day. Then I blew the light fuse at the battery. Did you have to upgrade(increase) the fuse strength?

Just bought a used 2012 wr450f dirtbike and it only comes with stock headlight. I want to turn it into street legal and ordered the lighting kit especially made for wr450f, but you have some extra wiring accessories I don't have. I don't have the patience on a tedious job like this, probably take it to a shop. But still liked the video, thanks.

Working on my bikes and improving them is part of the fun of owning them for me. You will like the Wr. Its a great bike. Wish Yamaha would put a 6th gear in them. I had trouble finding the perfect gearing for both street and dirt. I have a CRF450L now. Its everything I wanted the wr to be. A lot more money though. Safe riding.

Great video! How difficult would it be to eliminate the factory power button to eliminate the step of turning it on/off? Or maybe, why did you retain yours?

I'm not sure about the factory power button. It powers up the ecu, hour meter, fuel pump, etc. I imagine that you could disassemble the display and find the wires that go to the switch and tie into them. You would need to run them to another switch. The key maybe? so that the bike could still be powered on and off somehow. I don't mind using the factory switch, so for me it wouldn't be worth the work. It would be slick if you could make it work though.

Do the signals only work if the front and rear are both hooked up? I only hooked up my rear and they don’t flash. I was hoping that 90 degree banjo bolt switch was short enough and it seems good. I’ll be putting my sm wheels on this weekend. I’m not forward to doing the vapor install still..

They should work with one switch. Did you install the LED flasher also?

You say thay your lines are on order. The switches work off of Hydraulic pressure. They won’t work till the brake system is completely hooked up and the air bled out. Could that be the problem?

heyjacks the signals should be fine so i dont get it. I didn't even hook up my brake lights yet because I've been waiting on the lines and didn't want to bother with the banjo bolt switches yet until I have the lines so i don't have to re bleed the brakes..

Great video! I'm working on a similar conversion on a 2012 based loosely on the tusk kit. A few questions for you.... 1. How did you route the rear brake switch wire? Any issues with heat from the exhaust? 2. How did you mount the horn and relay harness to the lower triple clamp? 3. How did you did you mount those rear turn signals to the stock taillight? 4. How did you splice the dual sport harness into the headlight relay? Did you recrimp the connector? And a tip - bullet terminals suck. They rattle out all the time. Hit up cycle terminal for factory style connectors, that will last much longer. I plan on having all my custom wiring done by factory style connectors OR soldered connections. If you still want to use bullet terminals, invest in a high quality ratcheting crimper, it will get you better quality crimps. But still not as good as a soldered connection or factory connector.

soldering is so easy why wouldn't you always solder and then just put electrical tape or sock on top of the connection. Soldering kits are also quite cheap and the cheap ones work good too.

I installed a Baja design squadron led head light but dimmer function doesn’t work. Everything else works fine( blinkers, brake lots, Horn, ignition key). When I put the stock headlight in dimmers work. Any suggestions?

I did a quick search of that light. I'm not sure but it appears to be a single output system. I don't think it has a dimming function. Does it have a two wire connection or three?

heyjacks I finally got a hold of Baja design. I needed a dimmer module harness they sell for 45 bucks. Plug it in and all works well now. Great video by the way

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply. You probably have this worked out by now. All the parts I used were pretty universal except the plug and play key switch. I can't say for sure on that but I bet the company has a compatibility list. I'm glad this was helpful. I sold this bike and now have a Honda CRF450L. Check out my videos on it. Some of the mods will transfer to your WR.

I did! But now i have a problem I can’t figure it out! My bike it’s only starting when it is in neutral. Before messing around with cables and such it was working properly (starting with clutch in or neutral) that means when it’s in gear and clutchs is in will not start. Do you have any clue on why or where I messed up? Thank you for the help!

Great demonstration there much bigger pita then I thought it would be originally, have you upgraded the battery or starter or anything my 2014 only ever worked off of the electric start when I first bought the new battery never since.

I bought the bike used. The battery it had on it was long dead. I replaced it with a Shorai Lithium Ion battery before I added the light kit. I have never had a problem with it starting with the electric starter.

Look up MSR Inspection Sticker Plate on Amazon. I turned it upside down and bent it to the correct angle. I attached it using the stock screw holes through the brake light. You'll have to add some spacers and use longer screws but it works great and is cheap.

Does your headlight stay on at all times or can it be cut off?

It comes on when the bike starts and stays on until the main power switch is turned off. High low is controllled by the multi-finction switch. It would be easy enough to wire in a switch to turn it off completely but I think its safer to have it on all the time if its going to be street legal.

I am starting this exact same build, just with a 2012 model. Everyone I talk to is telling me I have to do a stator modification. Did you have to do this as well?

I've got a 07' wr450 and I too am gonna be into this same install . from what I understand it is capable of accommodating a " stator modification if you decide to in the future. I will be following most all steps done here in heyjacks video (minus front brake banjo bolt switch)

Sam Bumanglag I won’t be doing the front brake switch either. I picked up the bike from a friend who had already purchased a Baja designs dual sport kit, but it was for 07-11 and apparently won’t work on 2012. They instructed me my model year does not need a stator modification and outputs 130W DC. So I will pretty much be following this build, except I already have the Baja designs wire harness I might try to adjust and use. I would like to wire the up the key to turn on everything though.

hmm ok' I guess it's possible ? if it's the wire harness you might do some minor modifications to make it work( don't see how it could be that much different ). I like the idea of how heyjacks provided engine start access thru turn key method only, otherwise anyone could just kick-start the bike and take-off'

Sam Bumanglag That’s what I was thinking, except the Baja designs wants to eliminate the stock headlight and I’d rather keep it stock. Yeah that’s how I want to wire the key switch as well, except also wire it where nothing comes on except if the key is in the ignition. Not sure if that’s possible though. Interesting and fun build for sure, can’t wait to get it tagged.

i would prefer to wire the key switch to the on/off so that none of the electronics power on if the key is not in and turned.

oh and the reason for that is that it prevents the druggies from trying to kick it on or roll start it since the fuel injectors get the power and gain pressure and you can hear it.
