Breaking In The Habit

Breaking In The Habit

3 жыл бұрын

Most people are aware that there are seven tenets of Catholic Social Teaching. But where do these principles come from? Beside Scripture, they find their root in the social encyclicals and official documents of the Church, dating back to 1871. From Rerum Novarum to Querida Amazonia, the Church has had a lot to say on a number of issues.

I'll be honest and say I don't really get it when people unduly criticize St. John Paul II and Pope Francis for their "unorthodox" social encyclicals, when their ideas go way back to Catholic doctrine from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Perhaps I was just fortunate and blessed to have already studied CST in high school and university?

People don’t research or take time to form an educated opinion nowadays. It’s “I heard this from that person” or “I saw a news headline and now I’m angry” and when they are pressed with questions as to whether they took even 10 minutes to actually look at a topic, they change the subject or make things up from the top of their mind. It’s disgusting

Another fantastic video, Father! An interesting fact about Quadragesimo Anno: when the Irish Constitution was drafted in 1937, it was heavily influenced by Catholic social teaching. The effects of this has obviously led to much debate and amendments over the years since, which I won't go into here, but one thing which has been maintained is the makeup of Seanad Éireann (the Irish Senate). 43 of the 60 senators are indirectly elected to represent 5 "Vocational Panels", each representing different professions, namely Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, Labour, Culture and Education, and Administration. This system was directly inspired by the principles set out in Quadragesimo Anno

Thank you once more Father! I was just having this discussion yesterday about these very issues and found it baffling how so many Catholics have missed this or apparently have not read their CCC at all. I dont know if it has to do with me being a convert and not a cradle Catholic or just people are too busy for God these days, but I find many miss the fact that we should find ourselves in the center moderate spectrum (using American politics) and not in the extremes of either camp. So many times I have to remind both sides that no one political party fully embodies the teachings of the Church and that no, the Holy Father is not a socialist and that self reflection and more time in study is required.

This was quite a tour de force! All of these Papal documents show a logical progression of thought. This is why I find the resistance to them in these days by many Americans even many Catholic Americans , as very troubling. I hope that anyone who listens to your post will be inspired to read these encyclicals beginning with Rerum Novarum. As they read them, they need to take time with them, thinking them out and praying for the same Holy Spirit’s wisdom which inspired that same Holy Spirit Who inspired the election of each Pope , and their writings.

Prelude to Rerum Novarum is the "Syllabus of Errors" by Pius IX. It is a list of citations of various problems from the Modern Era. Also Rerum Novarum translates to "Of New Things". Novus, a, um - new. Res, reris - thing (generic sense). "Revolutionary change" would be modern idiom.

I believe the greatest loss of the 20th century on an intellectual level was the loss of the Christian-Socialist socioeconomic programs based on Rerum Novarum. For some reasons everything that connects to the socialist movements (even the some positive ideas) were declared atheist and everything that connects to the Christian politics is expected to be market-fundamentalist in economic nature. Pope Leo XIII, pray for us!

Whenever I chat with people doubting or criticizing Catholic social doctrine (e.g. for being too aligned with movements X, Y or Z), I usually reply that it's more of we're reclaiming social justice and order for God's Kingdom. Not that we're "ripping off" ideologies from questionable movements. Of course there will be some common elements as with most areas of thought. But I'm open to more discussion on this
@vincenzorutigliano5435

The problem is that nowadays all socialist movements around the world are aligned with Marxism, an atheist ideology. In the USA Capitalism (Both Democrats and Republicans) is based in Protestant determinism which is also outside the Catholic Doctrine. The Catholic principles were applied in the 19th century by countries like Spain (with the Philippines), Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Other Catholic countries like France and Italy adopted capitalism to boost their industrialization. After WW2 the Soviet Communism (Marxist-Leninism) and Chinese Communism (Maoism) influenced the rest of the world with guerillas and dictatorships in Latin America and Africa which ALWAYS persecuted religion. A catholic cannot vote for any of these movements because they are deeply anti-catholic. But we also should not embrace Capitalism, just try to solve the problems how Mother Theresa and John Paul II did.

@@vincenzorutigliano5435 Yeah... in broad terms, the rejudaization of the reformers caused the normalization of usury in majority-protestant territories that was unthinkable under previous Catholic social norms. And Karl Marx was right to criticize this form of usury but sadly he hadn't (wanted to) reach(ed) back to the relatively fair Catholic social teachings at the time but created his own counter-ideology.

Few bodies are incorrupt. There are some which have been preserved by human works and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just mislabeled. We keep relics of saints because remind us of their works where they were alive. The Church has a longstanding tradition of using parts of the bodies of the martyrs and saints below the altar since the time we lived in catacombs in Rome. It was made the moral standard by Catholics. Just as John Paul 2 led against Communism Catholic Church was salt and light in navigating the people in these types of godless government styles. By influencing the people to have unity and goodness where they are. And it's the reason we live a fair, non tyranical existence for the most part.

For centuries, the catholic church has been teaching is kindergarten bible teachings. Is that right? Ask the regular church goer for his favorite passage including the chapter and verse and youll get a blank stare back. What we hear are pep talk in Sunday masses.

Hold on just a minute there... I didn't know the Catholic church permitted conversion by coercion. In fact, I am confident it does not. What exactly is a "government regulation", but an arbitrary preference being enforced at the end of a state gun? How can the church uphold property and advocate for the violence against a person for the way in which he uses his property? And when I say violence I do not mean self defense, because regulations are not for the purpose of defense, but are for the purpose of enforcing a preference which is determined by someone who does not have privilege to the property in question. If he did have privilege we would not call it "regulation", but justice. A call for men to treat their workers fairly is far different than a rejection of laissez faire principles. There is nothing intrinsically evil about a system which does not permit the violation of another person's property. It is the baseline standard of human interaction on which superior morality can be built upon. Think of the great atrocities of all time! Did they not come about precisely by the state's use of a man's property against his will? How, indeed, does the state pay for the bombs, but by taxing a business "for the common good". I humbly beg you to pray to God that I may be enlightened if I am wrong. It disturbs me greatly when I see the religious scholars practicing apologetics in favor of modern government power. I have read the catechism, admittedly with some fear that I would find this heartfelt belief of mine to be in conflict with the church. But I was very relieved to find the clause as follows, "Regimes whose nature is contrary to the natural law, to the public order, and to the fundamental rights of persons cannot achieve the common good of the nations on which they have been imposed." If the natural law says that a man is the master of his property to include his body, then any government (every government) which taxes or coerces (regulates under penalty of violence) the use of property outside of self defense falls short in the eyes of the Church.

Since the scope of a government is to ensure and maintain the community good, it's also it's duty to ensure that everyone is contributing to it. That's not more "violent" than a parent ensuring that his/her children share the family food or help each other. Think of a community like a family, with the government as the parents, and it will be more clear what the social teaching of the Catholic Church is about.

Interesting that "usually" Catholic wealthy people are from the Right. It is a curious video thank you for it! I do see the first line with charity to be perversed with the fact that the Catholic Church did cover up a mass of child molestation cases. So let us hope that God helps us with the Church as well with all it s sins and to be forgiven and the for the victims. I love your precise and historic analysis, pope by pope, and seing the evolution of stuff that I never heard! This video again is really good! Continue like that!

You seem to follow all negative news on Catholics but you never analyze the facts you eat up from liberal media. America is a Protestant-Jewish country. Always has been and always will be! The sex abuse you speak of 1. Did you know states attorneys set up 800# to report Catholic sex abuse. No one verified that “victim” reporting a crime 30 yrs later even lived in the diocese. 2. You are fed the same “sex abuse” cases over and over, making them appear MUCH LARGER! 3. Not one priest was arrested!! All the priests they ACCUSED ARE DEAD!! Why? Because the reports are fake. Some ppl just want $$$. So are you saying all catholic sex abuse happened 20+ yrs ago THEN IT ALL STOPPED? These are catholic children. Are you saying out of 10k cases NOT ONE PARENT CALLED THE POLICE OR DOCTOR OR COUNSELOR OR FAMILY MEMBER. Geez you believe anything liberal atheist media tells you.

@@joanofarc6402 I don't know where you get the belief that no case has occurred in the last 20 years. Instead of focusing on old cases, we should focus on guaranteeing that potential victims have a real point of contact and that the guilty also accept their (worldly) punishment before they can really repent. Less than 5 years ago, a young nun reported that she had been raped by a priest in a religious house stationed in Rome. She found no one who believed her and showed her the legal route to prosecution. The mother superior even accused the young nun of seducing the priest. And this "unbelief" that a member of the Church is capable of such repugnant acts led to decades of silence.

The structural problem is in interest on credit… the church deviated on this and the result is disastrous, over the centuries.
