Q: "It's unclear how Ryuujin feels about his creation" A: *Screams internally* Honestly, for a long time between Starbound and the last year I'd been largely unaware of how the Avali had spread in VRChat and to other platform and only stumbled upon it after I got a VR set and decided to poke my head into VRChat to see what all the fuss was about and almost immediately found Avali everywhere xD As for lore, as you touched upon, 'evolved' is the right word. 2008 me was younger and dumber, and their original lore was a cliche mess. This led to some retcons to try smooth things out to make them more universally compatible with the RP community and the games they were trying to sedge into as the community branched out. The rumours of a lore reboot aren't wrong, today I have a much clearer idea of what I'd like to do with them and have a much stronger understanding of worldbuilding, but at this point such a reboot feels like it'd undermine what other people have already built around and I'm hesitant to do that. Nonetheless it's interesting to have an outside perspective of how people see them :3

i feel you shouldn't let that bother you, fan reactions to your changes i mean. It's impossible to please everybody, and a few people had been trying to steer it in directions with wild and unsourced speculation i'm sure you disagree with. So i feel reigning them in with definitive lorecraft and worldbuilding would help keep the broader community from splintering in bad ways.

Scream into an internal pillow. :D Gosh, that sounds like a movie scene, where the main character walks into the town from the start of the film to see the effects of some quest everywhere. Except, it's adorable space birds. Eh, that's understandable. Everything starts somewhere, and it's interesting to see little "for fun" projects of back in the day evolve into full scale projects in the present. Yeah, there's always cringe aspects of past projects, but also that charm with the spark of an idea. I'm sure everyone's given you a different answer, but I personally would love to see what you'd do with them now. I think so much as come up just because no one exactly knows what's canon or not. I think as long as there's a distinction between the new stuff and the old mod days, then it should be fine. Avali are one of the few original races floating out there in the furry circles that actually has an immersive lore to them. May as well keep that going. It's definitely been a journey from me wondering "Why the hell does this thing have four ears?" to "Holy shit I wanna snuggle this." XD But I can only imagine the odd mix of feelings hearing so many people praise your work. You've definitely earned all of that. But I must ask... why... oh why... did you have to make me so sad after "Whom Gods Destroy"? ;-;

I actually barely recently (as in a few months ago) got into having an Avali as my avatar since one of my VR chat friends had an Avali avatar that was public and looked really cool. I cloned it and it's become my primary Avatar that I use in VR. The inside part for me is that I'm not even a furry so I never would have thought in my life that I would have something related to furries as my main Avatar in VR Chat, but I'm happy I got it.

I have over 300 hours in Starbound but am just getting into mods, I looked up the Avali as there are loads of mods with that name in the workshop...I knew I've heard it somewhere and it hit me...Spore. I played a shitload of Spore back in the day, I probably have well over 2000 hours in that game. I've encountered them years ago, I never really thought much of them, I'm pretty sure I encountered them as zealots and ended up planet bustering them. It is extremely satisfying to see a Spore creation transcend games, I really don't even think they're that special but the fact they literally made it into another game is crazy.

great video! you for sure put a lot of effort and did a bunch of research to get this much info on the lore, especially all the details in starbound i personally liked these species by an accident (bcus of a friend) and now i actively do avali art for people and hang around the community, hopefully i'll get to meet them in vr again hah i think that the og lore for the species is super interesting, i'd get into it but it's kinda too complex for me to understand, i'd probs have to be dedicated to learn that many details about em anyways great job dude!

Hopefully we will one day have that retcon/unified lore version to keep everything consistent. Avali do have that effect. At first you wonder what's the deal with all the ears, and before you know it, you're snuggling them in VR. XD

Never really had a want to create a furry OC until I came across these stupid cute things. They just resonate with me for some reason and if I could draw I’d be drawing them left and right. I think dA had a few a year or so ago. VRC and Neos also support desktop play. It won't give you the same mobility as a VR headset, but it still gives you a bit of a feeling for things before making any large investment into hardware.

I havent watched the video yet I found out about the Avali’s in “Satoris” Twitter Account being a very big fan of “Ori” and the will of the wisp and their Art is INCREDIBLE For some time now I’ve been noticing that i absolutely love the designs that are quite similar to Ori ever since i was a kid, the eyes, the ears and the shape of the head, checking all of their posts their i found out about Avali’s in the posts about “Obsessing” Floppy ears with a bunch of Characters in it one of them is the Avali and it was quite familiar Looked it up on google and was wondering where did it come from and what its origin are all i kept seeing was “Starbound” Mod thinking *Nah there must be the “Original”* all i kept seeing where mods however, now im here and still quite confused, is this really just a Mod made by someone and it actually “BLEW UP” i saw this like some years ago and to me this is impressive.

You are missing some facts. Space Station 13 had Avali's as well and were created by RyuujinZERO. They were called Teshari. But some servers kept the Avali name. Yes, he play Space Station 13 about the same time he modded Avali in Starbound.

It does make it a little inconvenient if you're trying to directly plop in more conventional species, but it also can be a good tool for adding dynamics to the interactions. It takes a little more thought, but it can work.

@@BrownFoxWarrior there are two avali mods that had some drama between them and there's a 3rd one on the way which is supported by the creator of the older avali mod and made by someone who managed to make an entire customized framework because he didn't like the limits of the current humanoid alien framework

Because at this point anything non-human gets automatically assimilated one way or another from either within or without. They're still officially a separate entity, but the being cute thing probably only strengthens the "furry" argument.

Fascinating to watch! Would anyone happen to know if some mad lad has publicized a document that has compiled most of the "canon" lore, from reliable sources? The Avali Wiki is certainly a good start but I feel that it's not actively updated and is struggling with trying to provide its unique lore while not dismissing it's compability with Starbound and the freedom of the roleplayers. This realization really sunk in for me after I read about their current development being described as " ...an excruciatingly prolonged game of 'telephone.' ". Random example: How does an Avali's sense of smell work, is it like how some reptiles use their forked tongues as a way of smelling? I've heard of Avali having forked tongues, but I can't find the source for the information.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no specific source. Pretty much all of my information comes from stitching different lore bits together and definitely talking to people who have been around it for a while.

They do have forked tongues, Ryuujin doesn't write anything down in public though. It's probably a more primary sense for smell, while they still do have a secondary airway that might have some ability to sense as well.

So like other people would be hearing different kind of chirping language even though the person’s voice is like normally talking words but connecting a voice changer the avali chirp voices / language would be so fucking cool to do in VRChat. I hear a lot of different voices of different languages and I also heard some chirping sounds from other players using a voice changer. But just how the hell do you get the voice changer and somehow set it to the avali chirps / chirping when the in person speaking normal voice words but the human voice goes through the voice changer into a different voice / different chirping

It's NeosVR, which is an alternative to VRC. Some kind of translation system, while technically possible, would take a lot of work to set up. Definitely doable, but it would only work with similar people on the system, and likely VRC wouldn't support it at all. Otherwise, it's possible to make chirping noises. However, don't ask me how as I'm just a fox. :P

Dude that is a shit deal for the Starbound tidbit. Having the copyright of a race be handed over to Chucklefish and you only get a credit mention without payment is just.... no. The amount of effort to create custom sprites for the race, clothing, armors, etc + custom dialogue and many more is a labor of love. I should know, as I've dabbled making my own race on Starbound with custom assets, that effort is not worth a simple credit mention at all..
