In this behind the scenes video we'll be showing off a hybrid livestream setup for an educational institution. The streaming destination is Zoom Webinar but we will leverage a Zoom Meeting on an HD enabled account to bring in remote presenters.
By using two ATEM Mini Extremes, we can feed both the live show and in-house screens. I'll also show off how we use the original model of the web presenter to send mix minus audio back to our Zoom remote presenter.

Have you ever set up a macro to make changes on both switchers for this type of setup? I do this with a Mini Extreme but only have an OG Mini for my secondary switcher. It cannot be networked with ethernet (ugh) and only control via USB. To the best of my knowledge. I can't figure out if there is a way for me to write macros that will run on both switchers in one button push. On a streamdeck for what that is worth. Great video!

Hey - Firstly, just want to say this is a fantastic video walkthrough of a livestream setup, thank you!! I have one quick question regarding audio specifics. I fully understand the concept of only sending a mix-minus back to the zoom call which includes the mics in the room but not the return audio from the zoom call, but how do you handle the voices of the remote zoom presenters coming out of the PA speakers in the room and then getting picked up by the microphones the presenters in the room are using and causing feedback over zoom? I have tried to set up a zoom call in a space with a PA system before and ran into this issue, any tips would be super helpful!
@zephanmoses
@zephanmoses Жыл бұрын
I bring the best audio tech in town to handle that one! But for the most part, he places his PA speakers in front of the panel or speakers at the front of the room and he uses cardioid lavaliers instead of omni directional lavaliers. This prevents the lavs from picking up the PA speakers and he is also running the sound board the entire time so when someone in the room is speaking, he can bring down the zoom levels and when someone on zoom is speaking, he'll bring down the levels of the people in the room. So 1) PA placement 2) the right microphone pickup pattern and 3) a really talented A1 that mixes live events all the time!

Zephan: Thank you so much for the detailed overview of how you are doing what your preparing for. I am the tech guy for a small church in Eastern NC and we are doing our messages straight to Facebook live; but it is SO not working because of the frequent changes FB makes to the settings; and we are also only using one IPhone to record. Your equipment list is spot on; and I would just like to say Thank you... Your overview gave me exactly what I needed... My only other hurdle is how to overcome our PA guy.. We have a AH / QU-16Mixing board and the guy running it is struggling.. I would welcome ANY suggestion on how I could subtend the mixer to I can control our own audio without having to have to have two seperate mixers and mic setups?? There has to be a way to accomplish this; I just dont enough about the audio side of the house... We have our stream coming in from the House Out to a Presonnus iTwo feed by dual XLR and then we output to USB into iphone and mix the feed from the FB Live stream. I am a working pro with OBS; but the sound side of the house is above my paygrade.. Im all IT; and no Sound engineering; but if things stay on pace im getting ready to displace the sound guy if I can find a workable solution to ensure our stream output can reliabily be mixed without reinventing the entire process. Sorry to unload with this; but I cant stress enough how much your overview as helped push me in the right direction. Keep up the great work.. You just got a new sub..

Hey thanks for sharing your setup with me! I know that audio is certainly not my specialty so that’s why I turn to an expert but I know his mixer allows for him to mix virtually over an iPad. It connects to a little router that makes a small private network and then he can walk around the room doing his mixing no matter where the physical board is. Does that sound like something that you’re looking for?

Amazing video, very helpful! One question I have is what does the person on the Zoom call see? Do you send them a separate camera feed, or just use the webcam? And if you are running the slides from the stage, how do they see the slides? Is the slides computer also a zoom "participant" and the remote guest can spotlight it?
@zephanmoses
@zephanmoses 4 ай бұрын
Sometimes we feed them the program feed so they will see themselves to know when they’re live. Other times we return them just a wide shot of the room so they can see that the room is watching them speak on a screen. It’s up to the person. We can also return slides to them if needed. The slides computer is not on the same zoom call it’s local in the room.

@zephanmoses

Fiber only would need one cable. SDI would need two cable runs. There's a PowerPoint feed going from the front of the room where the laptop is on the podium to the back of the room where we are and then from us we are sending a feed to the projector and TV at the front of the room. So there would be two cable runs if we used SDI.

What are the advantages of using those specific SDI/HDMI converters versus the BM micro ones?
@zephanmoses
@zephanmoses 2 жыл бұрын
Reliability and the ability to scale and split a signal. I have the blackmagic ones as well. It's really just a matter of which ones I pull out of the case but I'll almost always go for the MD-HX first. I typically will bring a bunch of the BM bi-directionals, Decimator bi-directionals and the Decimator MD-HX which has a built in scaler. The MD-HX has HDMI in, HDMI out, SDI in and multiple SD outs, so you can use it as a scaler, converter and splitter all in one. It's also a great troubleshooting tool because you can tell it to send a color (Red/Blue/Green, etc.) out if it's not receiving a feed.

I take it the zoom webinar is for getting remote guests into the in-room meeting. If you wanted a remote set of guests to watch the event, would you connect an additional laptop to the PGM (or 2nd USBC out) out of the Atem ?
@zephanmoses

The Zoom Webinar is where the audience is watching the show. The Zoom Meeting is for bringing in virtual presenters and is receiving PGM via the web presenter because it requires mix minus audio which you cannot do with the ATEM's USB PGM output.

The audio interface is just usb into the computer. It feeds a single handheld mic into the computer and when in zoom we can simply switch the microphone settings to use that mic and start talking to anyone else on the zoom meeting. The web presenter is also usb into the computer and contains the livestream audio minus the zoom feed. If we want our guest on zoom to hear the livestream all we do is just change the microphone setting in the zoom settings to be the web presenter.

Hello, I translated your comment since it looks like it was published in German. I understand that you're looking to buy a Blackmagic TV Studio Pro 4K but you are wondering if it's a good choice. It's a good option if you are using 4K cameras, however if you don't need 4K cameras, then you could look into getting the ATEM SDI Extreme ISO or the ATEM 2M/E Constellation switcher. Unfortunately without more information I cannot provide a good answer for you. It's important to share things like what type of equipment you already have, if live streaming in 4K is worthwhile to you (and your audience) and how much of a budget you have to spend. If you are just starting out, I recommend the ATEM SDI switchers and then you can later work your way up. In case you need this response translated back to German, I've used Google Translate. My apologies if this did not translate well: Hallo, ich habe Ihren Kommentar übersetzt, da er anscheinend auf Deutsch veröffentlicht wurde.

How many guys: 4 (Livestream switcher, audio mixer, camera operator, zoom virtual guest manager) How much did we charge: A typical event like this might be $5-7K for the full day What's the session like? A lecturer sharing a presentation and research with PowerPoint slides. Hours? Full day - about 8am-5pm What portions of the event? All of it. We livestream the entire day except for lunch and coffee breaks. What went well? Everything What did the customer like? That we were able to provide the service that their in-house AV couldn't. They invested over a million dollars into a room that wasn't designed to handle a hybrid environment the way their people wanted it to work. How did I invite the Zoom guests? A zoom link in an email How did we prepare them ahead of time? We got on a Zoom call with them 1-2 weeks prior to the event and we walked them through changes to make for better audio, lighting and made sure their internet connection was stable.

@@flightstatic4662 the original was way better you could inject xlr audio to sdi or hdmi signals and it acted as a two input switcher with one sdi input and one hdmi input. It wasn’t an encoder at all so I was shocked when they released a “new” web presenter and it didn’t do the same things whatsoever. So I’ve always kept an original one on hand for this use. Only downside is it’s 720p capture but it works fine for most of our needs because we only use it on virtual hybrid setups like this. With the creation of the Rode Streamer X you can basically do the same thing now but it’s hdmi only.
