Complete REPAIR of Massive Bulldozer Yokes! | Sandblasting, Machining, Metal Arc Spray!

Watch as we restore a pair of worn-out blade lift yokes from a massive Caterpillar D11 bulldozer. In this video, we'll guide you through the entire repair process, from the initial sandblasting to the final coat of paint!
First, we'll remove the rust and old paint using our Rapidblast dustless blasting system. Then, to ensure the structural integrity of the yokes we'll conduct a crack test using our Magnaflux Y8 magnetic particle testing kit. To provide a clear visual demonstration, we'll also use this testing kit to identify cracks in a mining truck strut rod. Once we've confirmed the yokes' suitability for repair, we'll measure their bearing surfaces to assess the extent of wear. Then, we'll prep the first yoke by machining an undercut and rough threading it in our lathe. After that, we'll transfer the yoke to our Shenyang lathe for metal arc spraying using our Metallisation i450 machine. While the first yoke cools, we’ll repeat the process with the second. Finally, we’ll finish machining both of them to precise OEM tolerances before giving them a fresh coat of glossy black paint to restore their original appearance. The end result is a pair of yokes that look and perform like new. Join us as we showcase the skill, precision, and attention to detail that goes into restoring these vital components!

Kurtis states that the magnaflux is a good way to detect cracks, and sprays the white primer. I immediately agree as I can see a large crack already. Looking carefully, I can see it is actually a Labrador hair stuck to the iPad screen. After cleaning the screen, and hearing Kurtis finally agree that there are no cracks in the work, I think that this is probably the first time that magnaflux has crack tested and cleared a piece of work and an iPad at the same time. Gotta love multi tasking

So for those who are interested, a little more detail on how that crack detection system Curtis is using here actually works. The method he is using is called Magnetic Particle Inspection or MPI. It is a non destructive method using a hand held electromagnet called a yoke. The yoke is energized with electricity. This generates a magnetic field because wherever you have electricity you have a magnetic field and Visa versa . Can't have one without the other. The magnetism is imparted to the piece under inspection. All magnetic fields have what are called flux lines running from the north to south poles of the field. The ink Curtis sprayed on has very fine iron particles immersed in bay oil. The particles will line themselves up along the flux lines. If there is a crack in the material the flux lines will be disrupted by the crack. This will create another north and south pole around the crack which the iron particles will be attracted to allowing the crack to be seen. This method can detect very fine cracks in any material that will hold a magnetic charge and can also see sub surface cracks up to about 5 mm depth. It is used primarily to detect surface breaking cracks however. MPI is one of five non destructive methods commonly used in industry, automotive repair and aerospace to detect cracks. The others are Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI), which we have seen Curtis use. Radiographic Inspection (RT) Basically X-Ray for detecting internal cracks. Ultrasonic Inspection (UT) Using sound wave refraction to detect internal cracks. Can also be used to determine material thickness with a great degree of accuracy. Eddy Current Inspection. (ET) Used to locate internal cracking and is similar to MPI in that it measures impedance in electrical fields caused by cracks. Very common in the aerospace industry. Warren McCann; Canadian General Standards Board Certified Non Destructive Testing Technician.

Good & funny idea. Actually, that makes me wonder whether Homeless behaves like cats regarding the cardboard boxes and similar wrapping material, because cats tend to be more interested in the wrapping more than the actual gift content inside, from what I have seen in countless KZbin cat videos. 😄😆🐈😺 Come to think of it, there are quite a few CEE videos I have seen where Homie gets new toys in the mail from kind subscribers and other friendly viewers, but other than him being diligent and effective at destroying the wrapping before exposing the gift fully, it does not look like Homeless has got a preference for playing with cardboard wrappings, other than being allowed to destroy something at semi-regular intervals. 🐶🐕😄😂

The franna crane project might be my favorite KZbin-series of all time but this was an amazing video. I have been working in the mining industry for 17 years and have ordered multiple crack tests but I have never actually seen one done so this was really interesting for me personally and also seeing the spray welder in action was just icing on the cake. Every time I watch these videos I keep reflecting on how Kurtis deals with OHS. The overhead crane is used in so many shots where a real machinist would just heave and lift, it's only 40kg or so. As someone who has eight screws and two plates in my left hand as a result of She,l be right mate I can definitely relate to that. Oh,...and I enjoy the commentary Curtis provides, I know somewhere right near zero about machining stuff, so having the reason for the way things are done is enlightening. Thanks for showing the "before" and "after" shots close together; it really shows the work progress. Sometimes this is best seen at the very beginning. If you going to be doing more blast cleaning it might be worth having a blasting pit made to keep the mess under control? Shallow concrete or brick pit with heavy duty mesh top so that all the muck ends up in the pit, clear out when gets full. Saves all the grit and muck messing the place up. Even for pressure washing it’s so handy.

Here's an idea for your consideration. When you build your "Skid" for the Blasting System" how about a boom like is used to fuel the cars in some forms of racing. The easiest to think of is in F1. That way when you do small jobs like this one the hoses are up off the ground being supported by the boom. It could save you a lot of time being bent over. Maybe a work table that has a grate, slats like on a laser cutter, or maybe bars. Wheels too with a quick hitch to your fork truck.

I’ve been living overseas for the last 17 years and since 2020 have been servicing my homesickness by watching and listening to Kurtis and Karen’s adventures. I grew up in SE Queensland so when my sister picked me up to visit Brisbane we met her on the Gold Coast (I was coming up from NSW) - we made a small stop at the CEE shop and took a couple of piccies 😂🤪. Nice save for your customer! That metal spray kit look’s expensive but if it brings in high value work like this it’s a good solid investment in the future of the enterprise.
