The character "Jacobs" somewhat reminds me of the character "Kenneth" in 30 Rock. Rest in peace, Stephen. You left us far too soon. July 2, 1947 -- April 13, 1986 (aged 38)

Totally reminiscent yeah I bet some 30 Rock writer was a fan of Airplane and of the Johnny character. Kenneth was kooky like that, just not flamboyantly flaming and gay. I don’t remember Kenneth ever being definitively straight or gay maybe mysterious that way.

There was supposed to be an Airplane III, but I read that because Stephen was too sick with AIDS by that point, no one wanted to commit to the movie without him. Also Stephen was one of the earliest celebs to reveal he had AIDS. He revealed it in April 1984, less than a year before Rock Hudson.

Nice thought, but not true. The third movie never happened because while the second movie cost quite a lot more to make than the original, the box office receipts for the second were terrible. Airplane II bombed at the box office. Paramount lost interest, and the cast did as well. Robert Hays said in an interview that back then, movies didn't do sequels and franchises, and he didn't want to get pegged as "Airplane Robert Hays" and not be able to be cast in anything else.

Apparently he had "cancer related symptoms" since 79. He wasn't diagnosed with aids until 84 but seeing how little was known in the early 80's I guess it was possible he had it the whole time
