Hi Mike,. the early 40 horse engines suffered from low oil pressure due to the lack of cam bearings. Once there is a bit of wear in the cam journals pressure drops and the rod bearings wear quick. The later oil pump was a "cure" trying to boost oil pressure on these early 40 cases. Thanks for the video 👍

Good theory. Probably worn cam bearings. I can have the cam bored and put bearings in there. Probably be fine then.

If you have a machinist who knows these old cases, it might be worth rebuilding. I try to avoid 40 horse engines - nothing against them, just that 1600 engines are better all around (oil flow, cooling, and power) 😀

@@TheDasbull just good cases are becoming scarce unless you buy a new one...Then I go aluminum and stroker. even better and cheaper or about the same. like 200 to 300 more for stroker and already shuffle pinned and opened up for whater.

You know you’re a success when the bots invade the comment section! Seriously, great work as usual. I was clueless about the engine in my first VW and farmed out the rebuild. Learned a lot since then.

Hi Mike, you caught my interest on this one. I watched CT fire up that type 4 this morning. Love these motors the way they sound. I got my first stab at heating up broke off head bolts today. Got all of they out so was very happy 😊

Hey, in a past video you were talking about a rotisserie for the pan or body. I saw a guy use 2 engine stands. Easy peasy

You have noticed a play on a rod. When a connecting rod bearing becomes loose, oil leaks out of the oil circuit and the oil pressure drops, causing damage in the near future. Thanks for your videos;

Hi Mike, The identification letter "D" means that your engine was initially as follows: 1192 cm2 - 34 HP (at 3600rpm) - Type 1 - make from 08/65 to 1986 - Volumetric ratio: 7:1

Great video, I love the old 40 horse , your exactly right though , if your gonna be on or close to a highway you will be ran over . Great content. Thanks for sharing

A 40 horse does 55 - 65 on the highways & freeways , but I’ll turn the Hazards on going uphill in my slow 1962 Bus. Just like the Slow Semi’s do to warn other drivers they’re slow (45mph or under) going uphill in the right lane.

My 62 Vert had a frozen motor. I discovered rust in one of the cylinders. This was back in 1982. I fixed it, but didn't have to split the case. It ran really great after that. ... I'd question a low oil situation... some of those bearings looked weird, but you could see better than me..good luck..

Been watching your videos for years Mike. Your awesome dude. I have a 59 bug that my wife and I drive a lot. It currently has a 40 HP engine in it. I honestly think it's slower than the 36 I took out that's in storage. I've been thinking about putting the 36 back in it. I need to do some work on it first tho. Love your videos dude.
@Mikefngarage2 жыл бұрын
Yea I think there is very little difference in power on a 36 to a 40. they are both slow. But I do agree the 36 may have a better power to torque ratio. Putting a extractor on a 40 makes them slower than stock exhaust IMO. too The stock pee shooters work pretty good for low end torque. I always put a set of 1385s on a 40...makes them run decent with either cam or 1600 rockers.

Just commented on a video on your wiper blades that was suddenly taken down. This is the comment; FWIW: You need pressure on the glass but also make sure the blades are pristinely clean as well as the glass. Rain X and even wax helps on the glass. For the blades I’ve used dish soap such as Dawn to clean them.

The motor looks good enough to rebuild. Might have been local blockage to that bearing only. Got me beat. Looks very dry, must have been sitting around for quite some time.

Would micro measurements of the journal diameters and such help you understand what may have happened with previous rebuilds and any mods that may have failed? 🤔

Definitely

ran low on oil and the rod started knocking. Then they changed the oil and of course it didn't fix the rod knock. So it was set aside with clean oil.

which one.....There are lots. ha ha. the oil pan is cracked and they dont make a replacement. just need to keep it full and check it every time. Wish I could fix it. I tried to weld it up and it is better but cast just does not weld very well.

It’d be great if you could hook up with Mr. Okrasa to get a healthy 36hp type for the ‘54. He is in California; his last name is Ruiz.
