by the way, from an old VW and 356 porsche guy, Kudos to DR Porsche for designing such a timeless (~90 years now..) engine .. that we still use and work on ALL over the world.. Keep on being one of the many disciples of the DR. We tree hugging and energy conserving weirdos ... knew many years ago that "bigger is not better". Love your enthusiasm and dedication to "simple is better"!!

I've often heard said, "the meek shall inherit the earth" a quote from the Bible I think. I say there's nothing meeker than an old VW or 356 Porsche air cooled engine... Fantastic, adequate and reliable.

Nice 👍. I built a dual baby Dell carb'd 1600DP with new dual-relief case & Engle 100 cam back in the day. Heads were used stock German that came out of a bucket from some dude's front yard. Crank was new cast, non CW Brazilian. Yeah talk about stupid lol. Motor was fun to drive tho, mated to a hog'd-out '65 6V stock gear'd trans.

im terms of the engine case, you bolt the, two halves together and have the machine shop line bore the the crank tunnel and cam tunnel, some engines have cam bearings (not all), the machine shop should be able to measure the crank for proper main bearing size, your cam specs are okay, the biggest mistake Ive seen is cam and lifter mis match, like a german cam and mexican llfters, that will tear the engine into junk after about 50 miles, also a high volume pump and a real oil filter kit with a cooler will help a hell of a lot, toss the dual exhaust in the trash, go with a four into one deal, and toss out the points distributor

why 1835 one may ask??? because its the biggest bore one can go with out changing crankshaft. had an old 1600 that io bored to that. but i did other things as well. my beetle could smoke 5l mustangs with ease, sure dropped alot of jaws when the dual webers were tuned right and the 009 bosch mech adv distributor was in the right spot lol. ohhhhh great memories ! thanks for the video

guys now are taking them to 94 which is 1914. opening rubbing the case savers. Not the way I would do it. Now they have an 1835 thick wall that has the same opening at the case and you open the heads for a 94 then it is super thick walls so they dont run hot.

I made alot of the same rookie mistakes too when I was young, like the cooler block off to run an external cooler..thinking it would cool better because its not inside the motor..lmao..that was dumb...could only drive the car for about 45 min before i had to stop and let it cool off..ended up having a wrist pin circlip come apart inside my 92s..lol ..yeah, i had an 1835 as well..it gouged a huge gash in the cylinder and was smoking bad..still ran though...fast forward 15yrs and 2 engines later...The 10 years I spent working at Wolfgang International was quite the knowledge growing experience.

I WAS REPAIRED A VW ENGINE WITH AS 41 BLOCK. 76 mm CRANKSHAFT, W 110 CAMSHAFT, CYLINDERS AND PISTONS 85.5 AND IN A ROUTE OF 800 KM I START BLOWING THE BANK HIT, WHEN I REMOVED THE ENGINE I HAD THE SAME AS YOURS, NO I KNOW IF THAT IS COMMON IN BLOCKS AS 41? BUY ONE OF BETTER ALUMINUM? OR WAS THE MECHANIC POSSIBLY NOT APPROPRIATELY TIGHTEN THE BLOCK ?, WHAT DO YOU ADVISE ME?
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
yea that center main wears out sometimes pretty fast. Total solve with the aluminum case. All you need is to buy the one already opened for the cylinders you want. crank drops right in. Buy aluminum once and almost every time it is a one time purchase. They simply last forever compared to mag.

pay very close attention to the oil cooler and pedestal gaskets, wrong ones will choke the flow and could even nearly close off the flow. have the machine work done to full flow the case and run external filter, it's well worth the money spent, although in a car it's likely very cramped up. I highly doubt the bread and butter of tall track manifolds, dual weber/delorto carbs and 042 heads would fit too good either :))

looked like someone forgot "torque day" or had the center studs or nuts back off. only seen one case dead like that out of around 100, it was a no oil change special which also spun the end around and seized. didn't play with them until the late 90's though and first thing we did was machine shop the case and everything else and assemble with nylock and copper nut sets. all off-road mountain climbing in WV of course (flat-lander's from Ohio they called us) lol

I like how your making the best engine you can with those old components. Good video to learn engine building as well. My new 1916cc was not cheap, I did a deal with a mate and used my automotive painting trade skills on respraying his notchback and a type 3 wagon converted to a ute. The body work was pretty good, just tired paint and some dents. They used a Suzuki Sierra rear window panel. There is a gas lift top on the ute body. A very cool looking VW.

What I like about the VW engine it's designed like an aircraft engine. Thus some homebuilt aircraft used the whole engine or cut them down to two cylinders.

I’m thinking of doing the same. I have a weak engine that I bought off Craigslist about 15 years ago. Never put a lot of miles on it but it has very little power now. I’m curious what the inside looks like. So are you single relief cases are not worth rebuilding? If mine is single relief should I just spend a grand on a new case?

I've certainly built lots worse Bug engines than that when I was a young guy. I had a '63 40 HP that had the insulation off the firewall come off and block the cooling fan intake while I was flat out on the highway, no fan gave a great boost in power for about 2minutes, then two exhaust valves burned. Fixed that engine by just removing that head and fitting two second hand exhaust valves. Bug was back in service for work transport after the weekend, it kept running for some time, until I sold it.
@ocavant

lol. My first bug resto(a '69) I neglected to straighten the spikes for the tarboard on the firewall when I installed it. Finished the car and gave it the my wife. It was beautiful. One hot day she called in a panic and said the engine stopped. Told her to wait till I could get there. The board had gotten so hot and flexible, the engine fan sucked off the wall and blocked all air to the motor. Thankfully she apparently did not over heat it too badly as I was able to pull the board and get it running. I've not made that mistake again. lol
